"Help with new laptop"

My sister got a new Laptop around christmas, HP g7 series windows7, that came with free 60 trial of norton internet security 2012. That trial has expired and she doesen't want to pay to reup. What are your best recommandations of free antivirus/firewall. I have been reading on cnet conflicting user reviews on alot of the various free software. I don't know much about this and any help would be very appreciated.

(I know I should download more ram before doing anything first.) Thanks
