2740606, Damn, Celtics just shipped Kemba…
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Jun-18-21 08:22 AM
the NBA NEVER sleeps, lol

Kemba, 2021 #16, 2025 second rounder for Al Horford, Moses Brown, 2023 second rounder. I kinda liked Moses…welp.

2740607, If it doesn’t fit you must acquit

2740608, So BOS’s 1st move with Stevens as an executive is to ship
Posted by bentagain, Fri Jun-18-21 08:31 AM
Kemba and bring back Horford

Kind of a big F U to Danny...no?

BBall wise... I don’t see how this helps
TT washed... and probably needs to be moved too...which makes this trade a lateral move
Looked to me like Williams had earned the starting C nod for next season anyway

and BOS’s biggest issue is health
They still need a 3rd bucket getter for the games Tatum or Brown are out

I assume this is a sign of more to come...but don’t you need to hire a HC first?

2740626, Not really, it’s primarily a salary move

And if he’s worried about hurting feelings then he’s not doing his job.
2740629, Don’t the salaries have to match for the trade?
Posted by bentagain, Fri Jun-18-21 10:46 AM
And Kemba has a 15% kicker

IIRC, the reason Horford left to begin with was being butthurt about not being top priority that offseason

Looks like there’s a lot of feels

?
2740633, I believe picks somewhat even out a trade where salaries don’t match
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-18-21 11:20 AM
And they also have some of their trade exception left that they may be using for this. Idk, I’m not well-versed in the financial side of the NBA, but that Kemba deal was killing us with him being injured all the time. At least Horford is healthy.

I don’t remember that, but maybe. I thought he just got a better deal with the Sixers. If he had hard feelings about everything I’m sure Ainge being gone helps things. And anything has to be better than being a veteran in OKC. They sent him home cause they weren’t losing enough. Either way, he doesn’t strike me as a particularly sensitive guy. I’m sure being traded a bunch sucks for anyone, but he’s a professional.
2740645, Kind of.

They have to be in the ballpark for this year, but they don’t have to long term (which is why teams trade expiring deals for guys on longer deals all the time). They also have some traded player exceptions to play with, and I don’t fully understand the math there, but you can be temporarily over the cap on these trade exceptions, I believe… but truthfully that doesn’t affect OKC at all, since they’re so far below the cap.

So OKC can make a trade where they’re taking on a bit more this year and ~30ish mil over the next couple of years. And Boston can save that money. Which they desperately wanted to do to add a true third piece of value.
2740609, Was this Brad Stephens?

2740612, Knew it’d cost a lot to get off Kemba
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jun-18-21 08:46 AM
2740622, They actually got some really good value.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jun-18-21 10:10 AM
Moses Brown could low key become a starting center, and outside of Robert Williams, they’ve gotten little to nothing from their bigs in the last two years. And IIRC, Horford is owed something like 30 million less than Kemba over the next two years. Won’t be surprised if this is the first step in generating enough money to make a move for that third guy the Celtics wanted Kemba to be but still desperately need.
2740616, Shai and Kemba backcourt will be interesting
Posted by Amritsar, Fri Jun-18-21 09:26 AM
Shai has had some great mentors early in his career

2740619, I’m wondering, though, if Sam gonna flip Kemba…
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Jun-18-21 09:33 AM
maybe a package to move down.
2740620, He should have just resigned with Charlotte
Posted by guru0509, Fri Jun-18-21 09:53 AM
oops i just read that charlotte lowballed him.

cant blame him.

healthy kemba >> ben simmons

2740634, he's never going to be healthy Kemba again
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jun-18-21 11:28 AM
Charlotte didnt lowball him. They offered him what they thought he'd be worth as 5'10 PG w/ rapidly deteriorating knees entering his 30s who lived off being ungodly athletic
2740636, He was eligible for supermax and they didn’t give it to him
Posted by guru0509, Fri Jun-18-21 12:08 PM
I’m sure he felt lowballed but you’re right re his health conditions

Unfortunate

2740641, people love to criticize MJ does he get credit for that?

2740644, Only credit MJ gets is finally hiring people who aren’t yes men
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jun-18-21 01:50 PM
2740627, Seems like most Celtics fans hate this but I think it’s a good move
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-18-21 10:35 AM
Get rid of Kemba’s salary, probably do the same with Horford’s salary down the road if he can’t contribute, get a promising young center in the deal.

Now we gotta use those savings though.
2740643, Even if you keep Al, or cut him next year, it’s a big savings.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jun-18-21 01:45 PM
IIRC, the amount of guaranteed money Al is owed is notably below the amount Kemba is owed. And Al knows his role will be just to train Robert Williams, Moses Brown, Grant Williams, etc. at this point. Clearly defined role.

Boston’s not done making moves so maybe they try to send him again, but even if they keep him, worst case, they’ve cleared serious money (and added Moses Brown, who I really like).
2740652, Right, if this is the only move they make it’s not very good
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-18-21 02:19 PM
But obviously that’s not the plan

>IIRC, the amount of guaranteed money Al is owed is notably
>below the amount Kemba is owed.

Yeah it’s about 20 million if they hang on to him.
2740656, I liked the move too. I really like Moses Brown
Posted by Lach, Fri Jun-18-21 03:36 PM
and I think Horford has more left than he's getting credit for. Philly wasn't a good fit at all and he obviously didn't want to be rebuilding in OKC at his age. I think we've got a couple more moves coming the next few weeks.
2740632, LOL @ Boston.
Posted by CyrenYoung, Fri Jun-18-21 11:06 AM

*skatin' the rings of saturn*

..and miles to go before i sleep...
2740640, Kemba will only be in OKC for a few weeks or months.
Posted by allStah, Fri Jun-18-21 12:49 PM
He will be moved again soon for more picks or for younger players.

So who should pick up Kemba, and where would he fit the most?

2740648, The 16th pick has way more value to OKC than to Boston, too.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jun-18-21 02:01 PM
It’s not especially likely that there’s a win-in-the-next-two-seasons guy at 16 in this draft. But there are several guys that are boom-or-bust long term prospects that could be good for OKC. (Or that OKC could package with other picks to move up for a stud.)
