2693069, How do you all feel about "farewell tours"?
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Apr-11-19 06:28 PM
I think Kareem was the first one to have one with people giving him rocking chairs and stuff and I think Dr J did something similar. Some people thought it was cool some people thought it was corny.

Most players don't decide to retire until the off-season so they don't get the opportunity.

Kobe was the first modern era player to get one and different people had different opinions about that.

This year's farewell tours of Wade and Dirk have been pretty much a love-fest.

With the way players move around now will we see anything like this again?

CP3 may get one especially if he helps the Rockets win a title.

I really can't see anybody else right now...
2693071, 100% for them.

Teams, and their fans, get to show their appreciation for the game's greats.

Players get to receive well-earned adulation in real time before they hang it up.

This becomes particularly touching when direct rivals get to pay their respects.

IMO there is no negative to this

It's not like anyone mentioned in this post doesn't clearly deserve it.

And if standards slip? So what? Bring on the JR Smith 2020 tour. That's a best-case scenario.
2693108, I would buy VIP tickets to that n/m

I've got a soft spot for nostalgia and firmly believe in giving people flowers while they can still smell them.
2693074, As far as current players who'll get them:
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Apr-11-19 07:42 PM
LeBron. No matter how many more teams he's play for. (and there'll be more) If he decides to announce his retirement in advance, he'll get one.

I could see Curry getting one if he decided to call his retirement in advance. Like LeBron, changed the game and will continue to influence lots of players.

Maybe KD or Westbrook.
2693076, As far as people saying they're "all for them" the point is that...

most players don't decide until the off-season the to hang it up. Dirk's situation was unique he's probably the last star to spend his entire career with the same thing. Wade got to go back "home" to Miami for a fairy tale ending. Most players spend their final years like Paul Pierce bouncing around to different teams as role players trying to get that last check. I think Hakeem spent his last season in Toronto.

Will more players start to announce their retirement at the start of or during the season to have the farewell tour? I feel like it my start to get cheesy at that point...
2693082, So what?

>feel like it my start to get cheesy at that point.

We can address that if/when that's the case.

The rest is 100% irrelevant.
2693077, depends. Dirk deserved his.

Steph might stay with GS but who knows.
2693083, the people that get them deserve them. So I like it.

I think I remember Paul Pierce being somewhat upset that he didn't get one.

He announced his retirement before the season and YOU took that to mean he wanted a farewell tour. Nothing more, nothing less. Find me ONE thing Pierce has said about having/not having a farewell tour.

2693188, As long as they stay retired, fine.

But there should be a law that you can't unretire.

have 9 figure contracts are making $30-40mil a season so hopefully we won’t see any of those guys bouncing from team to team chasing vet minimum checks at the end of their careers.

Wade and Dirk took huge pay cuts to finish their careers with the teams they started with. I don’t know if any of the current guys egos will allow them to do that.

For most of em, they'll do it if they have the right situation.

They COULD avoid that altogether by quitting a few years before it's time, but then again..the 35 million per year deals cats are signing will be hard to turn down even if you're in year 4 of 5 and they know they suck. And hell, dudes are comfortably taking weeks off at a time mid-season like they work up in an office. So yeah, maybe scratch that quitting early theory!

If 'taking a deal' nowadays meaning signing a 3 for 36, dudes are gonna keep playing if they feel like it. The only folks that are gonna lay it down are the Melo types who have shit on their names AND a gang of money to plug their ears with.
