Nick Bosa Deleted Donald Trump, Colin Kaepernick Tweets Prior to NFL Draft

By MICHAEL SHAPIRO April 10, 2019

Former Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa scrubbed his Twitter prior to the NFL draft because he "might end up in San Francisco," according to ESPN's Kevin Van Valkenburg.

Bosa didn't shy away from controversial opinions on Twitter during his time with the Buckeyes. He called Colin Kaepernick a "clown" in 2016, and quote tweeted a picture of Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan with the caption, "Goats." Bosa's "online behavior grew increasingly bland," in recent months, per Van Valkenburg, cultivating a more branded Twitter persona prior to the draft.

Bosa is projected to be selected by the 49ers with the No. 2 pick in Sports Illustrated's newest mock draft. He tallied 26 sacks in three seasons with Ohio State along with 51 tackles for loss.

San Francisco finished 2018 third in the NFC West at 4–12. Arizona finished last in the division and will draft first in the 2019 draft. The Cardinals are reportedly eyeing Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the top pick.
2692937, what does deleting the tweets accomplish?
Posted by 3xKrazy, Wed Apr-10-19 01:40 PM
everyone is well aware that he's an all out MAGA loon

at one point he was dating some beauty pageant chick who has a role in the trump admin...not sure if that's still ongoing.

niners fans will get over it
2692939, Dude's played his hand already...
Posted by Creole, Wed Apr-10-19 01:43 PM
He also deleted tweets about Beyonce and Black Panther according to the articled linked below.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2019/story/_/id/26470980/nick-bosa-nfl-draft-best-prospect-itching-return-field

Dude said he did it because he might be going to San Francisco.

That seemed like a real passive aggressive way to speak on stereotype that San Fran has long held.

Excerpt from the piece:

"I asked Nick the same question reporters always ask Cheryl: How are the brothers different? Joey is more competitive, Nick reluctantly admits, and has interests outside of football. (He'll make his acting debut with a small role in the final season of Game of Thrones on HBO this spring.) Nick loves football more, he says-"I was full-on into it from the time I was 7. Joey, not as much." He's also more politically minded. Last year he seemed to delight in posting political takes, including his support for President Trump, on Twitter and needling dissenters. (He also caused a minor social media stir by criticizing Beyonce, Black Panther and Colin Kaepernick, all eventually deleted.) As the combine drew near, though, his online behavior grew increasingly bland. I asked why he seemed to abandon something he had previously embraced."

"I had to," he says. "There is a chance I might end up in San Francisco."
2692941, Like the Bay hasn't had conservative athletes before

Bosa should get out of his bubble and experience Real America.

Usually it's just the white ones, but I'm not surprised it turns out to be a Black player as well.

And to answer the above question, yes, Bay Area football teams have had vocally conservative players before.
2692946, I assume every football, baseball and hockey player has very bad politics
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Apr-10-19 03:11 PM
Unless proven otherwise.

And I don't automatically assume a basketball players are good, either, but they're probably less overtly bad. Soccer players are a mix, I feel like ones from America can be cool, but I assume any big name from Europe is their equivalent of a football/baseball player. Though at least they're not going to post some "in Communist Sweden, they kill you if you need knee surgery LIKE AND SHARE" memes.
2692945, he'll be going to work in Santa clara

And living in a whitebread neighborhood. Derek Carr has the same political beliefs and could get free soul food in oakland during his pro bowl season. Play well and no one will give a shit. Not that the 49ers/raiders fanbases are the models of fine human decency. I wish they would say something.
2692955, so he has standard football player politics?
Posted by GOMEZ, Wed Apr-10-19 04:49 PM
the MAGA persona only really surprises me in basketball. Kevin McHale and Gordon Hayward weren't something I would have anticipated.

Even black players in the NFL tend to hold fairly conservative viewpoints as a group. It's the culture of the sport at almost every level, almost like military indoctrination.

Fuck his politics, but no more so than like 40% of our country, i guess.

2692967, What black players are “conservative”?

I realize because of income some favor conservative tax breaks but I’m not sure what else outside of that.

2692979, most Black people are Christian and “pro military”, that doesn’t...

tmean they’re republican lol
2692981, yeah most of america in general is christian and pro-military.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Apr-11-19 08:01 AM
the military is one of the most favorably-viewed institutions in the country.

and 70+% of america is christian.

black people themselves are overwhelmingly the most religious/christian ethnic demographic by almost 20% more than any other group.

but like you said...that doesnt make them republican. they dont have a monopoly on these traits.
2693006, i didn't say they're republican, they just seem conservative
Posted by GOMEZ, Thu Apr-11-19 10:51 AM
NFL is weird though, It just feels like the 8th branch of the military to me.

Maybe they're more apolitical in a go along to get along situation, but outspoken players who are not conservative like Michael Bennett, Colin Kapernick or Arian Foster seem to stand out because they're such an exception to the rule.

Like i said, hella 'god and country', not particularly progressive on gay issues, fairly misogynistic, I don't now. They might vote D, but as a culture shit seems fairly conservative.

2694655, Relatively speaking (and on average) black folks are not conservative.

When compared to white folks in their same location/SES
strata, etc, black folks are definitely not conservative.

Describing the NFL and it's players as a conservative league didn't feel really in dispute to me, but some people felt differently. The fuck do i know, though.

not saying he will...but there's plenty of time in his life to grow and evolve as I'm sure most of us have from when we were that age.

prior to recent events, I thought he would've laid low, played well and most niners fans wouldn't have given a shit.

but now that he's been unwittingly forced into the role of NFL poster boy for maga...his image is permanently fucked with at least half the country. let alone all of SF.

I don't think in a million years he thought he would be getting shout outs from trump at MAGA rallies. he's being used.

AND it's about to fuck up his pockets. you think he wanted this?

singling out black panther and shitting on beyonce and kaepernick. i mean that's the gotdamn bat signal for maga.

i feel no sympathy for him. he is in a league run by many racist ass old white men who will pay him for what he can do and what he's NOT going to do (kneeling for 1st 2nd 3rd)

it's also a trait shared by most kids on social media irrespective of political views. they're fucking idiots.

now, bosa "didn't think" before tweeting that stuff...yet it was part of his grand plan to be used as a political prop by trump however many years down the line after getting drafted? this would require a great deal of thought. either he was thinking or he wasn't. we can't have it both ways. and frankly, i dont think 18/19 year old nick bosa was smart enough to mastermind such a plan. let alone 22 year old nick bosa.

2694827, we can agree to disagree. and we'll never really know the answer.
Posted by 3xKrazy, Tue Apr-30-19 02:12 PM
I'd love a show of hands from anyone here who can honestly say that they predicted this outcome. In the countless hours of the niners research/discussion of bosa, I'd love to know if their front office had ever considered the possibility that things would twist this way. My feeling is it's a strong NO. But teenage nick bosa had this all cooked up from the start? And deceived the niners into thinking that he'd fall back from the maga buffoonery (by deleting the tweets and apologizing) yet all the while knowing that within minutes of being drafted he would become an instrument of trump's agenda?

He deleted the tweets. He gave his mandatory apology. And he hasn't acknowledged any of Trump's praises and fanfare. I don't see how it can be argued that bosa doesn't want this shit to just go away. He could own it and grow this thing 100x bigger than it already is. He could make a bosa jersey the equivalent to rocking a red maga hat. If he wanted to.

>pretending he didn't is just ignoring what the tweets
>actually said.

What aspect of the tweets am I ignoring or not understanding?

The very first post of this thread I refer to Bosa a 'maga loon'. I don't think there's much more to it.
2694829, saying he wanted this is not the same is
Posted by Rjcc, Tue Apr-30-19 02:19 PM
"had this cooked up from the start"

he wanted people to know what he thinks.

these weren't tweets to or between friends. he wants to spread these ideas.

pretty much everything else you've asserted doesn't line up with his actions.

who cares whether or not he acknowledges trump now? he knows who and what trump is about and he proudly and openly supports him. why would we assume he wouldn't want to be recognized by the president he supports?

it doesn't really make sense.

nope.

there's not a whole lot of "everything else". All I said was that he didn't want THIS outcome.

>who cares whether or not he acknowledges trump now?

bosa was given a window. why didn't he jump through it? what better way to spread your ideas than by embracing your opportunity as a maga celebrity hero and drastically increasing your audience? if this is what he wanted then why wouldn't he celebrate it?

>he knows
>who and what trump is about and he proudly and openly supports
>him. why would we assume he wouldn't want to be recognized by
>the president he supports?

the answer has been clearly stated in my above posts. it's bad for business. again, which is why he walked it back and deleted the tweets and gave the faux apology. because that was good for business.

at the end of the day i dont think this is as big of a disagreement as you're making it out to be.
