2692538, Final Four
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Apr-06-19 07:26 PM
That... was an ending.

Definitely was a foul. Definitely was also a missed double dribble. Tough break for Auburn.
2692539, Yup. Props to Guy for making all 3 though
Posted by DJR, Sat Apr-06-19 07:28 PM
That’s crazy pressure.
2692544, For real. I also loved his post-game comments.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Apr-06-19 07:49 PM
He admitted he was terrified. Most kids would pretend they knew they'd make them. Nah. You don't *really* know.

I really want to hate Guy because he's so good. But he makes it hard.
2692540, Terrible ending.
Posted by legsdiamond, Sat Apr-06-19 07:34 PM
2692541, Bennett gets major criticism if they lose that game
Posted by DJR, Sat Apr-06-19 07:34 PM
The difference between being considered a genius and a moron for a coach is such a thin line and is often out of their control. That was all on the players/refs/luck in the final seconds and it worked out in his favor.
2692542, This is so underappreciated by fans/writers/etc.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Apr-06-19 07:36 PM
>The difference between being considered a genius and a moron

Virginia's been so close to the Final Four before, but they've also gotten the "they'll never make it due to style of play." Same with so many other teams/coaches. It's hard to get there, much less to get that close, much less to *finish.*
2692548, Y’all notice the bald ref’s running style?
Posted by benny, Sat Apr-06-19 09:41 PM
Lmao
2692549, Don’t why commentators were saying the foul was “controversial”
Posted by mrhood75, Sat Apr-06-19 09:53 PM
Was clear as hell.

And yeah it was a double dribble.

Crazy fucking ending.
2692550, I could feel my brain calcify during the first half of the second game.
Posted by mrhood75, Sat Apr-06-19 09:54 PM
Gave up watching it.
2692551, Yup, that might do it.
Posted by Beezo, Sat Apr-06-19 10:02 PM
2692554, thanks Tech
Posted by will_5198, Sat Apr-06-19 11:50 PM
fuck MSU
2692561, Izzo: We had to be TOUGHER than them and we weren’t!
Posted by DJR, Sun Apr-07-19 08:05 AM
I’m so tired of this meathead cliche stuff.
2692674, lol. He's the worst.
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 09:34 AM
2692562, Worst final four in a long long long time
Posted by guru0509, Sun Apr-07-19 09:13 AM
>That... was an ending.

>Definitely was a foul. Definitely was also a missed double
>dribble. Tough break for Auburn.
2692563, I love it. All the pre-ordained hype train teams are home
Posted by DJR, Sun Apr-07-19 09:23 AM
Texas Tech has been the best team since late January, and Virginia has been one of the best teams all year.
2692565, abysmal. this will be the "lost" year in tournament history
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Apr-07-19 11:08 AM
2692566, Why?
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Sun Apr-07-19 11:30 AM
2692568, Three straight games of 60 possessions or fewer.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Apr-07-19 11:56 AM
Almost certainly fewer for Monday. Could get as low as, like, 54.

The total in Vegas is 117 for tomorrow, and I'll be taking the under. It's going to be a rock fight the likes of which we haven't seen since Butler/UConn.

I like that it's two teams that've never won before, but man, it's going to be *brutal* basketball.
2692669, Could we see a game in the 50s?
Posted by The Real, Mon Apr-08-19 08:54 AM
I know Tech and M State were throwing up some bricks.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2692684, Losing team could end up in the 40s imo.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 11:50 AM
It’s gonna be a 55ish possession game with the two best defenses in basketball, so they’re likely to hold each other to under a point per possession.
2692698, Good defense can be a beautiful thing
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Apr-08-19 02:17 PM
2692703, haven't a lot of these been bad in recent memory?
Posted by 3xKrazy, Mon Apr-08-19 02:50 PM
uconn/butler was an all time clunker transcending all sports
2692731, Probably the worst title game in history.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 08:49 PM
>uconn/butler was an all time clunker transcending all sports
2692735, the night college basketball died.
Posted by will_5198, Mon Apr-08-19 09:03 PM
>uconn/butler was an all time clunker transcending all sports
2692732, Offense has surprisingly heated up after a predictably rough start.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 08:49 PM
Can't believe the under 117.5 might not hit-- I would've taken it all the way to 110.
2692737, Ty Jerome is soooo "cool"
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 09:11 PM
Love his game, cerebral, chill, $$.

If I was a guard in another life I'd play like him. With a bit more Lift ideally
2692739, He's absurdly good. I want him to go pro so badly.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 09:14 PM
I don't want to have to face him again. He always has the knack for the big shot and the clutch decision.
2692738, Fun, intense game. F'k the haters
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 09:12 PM
2692743, Yup. Aggressive and stifling defense is entertaining to me
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Apr-08-19 09:21 PM
That ball has seen no parts of that lane
2692742, Kenny and Charles, STFU
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 09:20 PM
Worst half time analyst I've heard, even from them.

Showing highlights of Clark passing up shots? Clark? That's what he does. What points are they trying to make? By now you'd think they'd know what this teams about

Kellogg Must have been shaking his head furiously off Camera
2692744, I love that they told both teams to *reject* their entire style.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 09:23 PM
Jesus Christ.
2692748, Hunter > Culver, and Jerome > Mooney.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 09:46 PM
That's really been the whole game so far.
2692750, Clark is the ultimate "coach's player"
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 09:52 PM
The older I get the more I appreciate guys like that.

Why I got mad CB and Kenny summerjam screening him at half. He's going exactly everything your want.
2692757, I'm so annoyed that he's just a freshman.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:02 PM
He's going to be a pest for three more years.
2692758, RE: I'm so annoyed that he's just a freshman.
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Mon Apr-08-19 10:07 PM
And by senior year he’ll be in mateen cleaves college god mode
2692759, What?!? I just assumed he was older
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 10:08 PM
That's crazy. He must brainwash these kids
2692752, Outside of Culver how many NBA players are in this game?
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Apr-08-19 09:57 PM
2692754, Hunter is a Top 10 pick, and Jerome is a late first rounder.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:01 PM
I'd take Hunter with the 4th or 5th pick, tbh. Nothing he can't do. I think they'll both go in this draft.

Outside of that, Kyle Guy could be a Diet Coke JJ Redick. He'll get drafted at some point, second rounder for sure imo, though he kind of feels like a guy who'd come back senior year.

Texas Tech doesn't have another pro imo. Maybe guys like Edwards or Moretti could develop under Beard over the next year or two into bench-riding guard types, but it's hard to bet on them right now. They'd have to *really* ball to get there. Great shooters and quality defenders as young college players, though.
2692756, Probably 3
Posted by Beezo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:02 PM
2692760, Good no call on that flop! Led to a layup, like it should
Posted by DJR, Mon Apr-08-19 10:11 PM
Stay on your damn feet and play the game.
2692761, Are you not entertained ??
Posted by Beezo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:11 PM
2692762, Great game. Under dead
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 10:12 PM
2692764, A pleasant surprise.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:19 PM
Not for my under, mind you. But for the enjoyability of the game.
2692763, Another great game
Posted by DJR, Mon Apr-08-19 10:17 PM
2692765, Pro move by Culver against the best defender in college basketball.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:23 PM
Let's see what Bennett draws up.
2692766, gotdamn instant replay.
Posted by will_5198, Mon Apr-08-19 10:42 PM
2692767, Especially on some horseshit like that, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:45 PM
Kyle Guy intentionally fouls Moretti, we can't review that.

The ball is knocked out, we can review that.

Virginia propels the ball out, but the tiniest skim of the pinky gives the ball to UVA.

That was a decisive moment right there. And much like the last couple of games of the tournament, everything is going UVA's way at the right time.

And I'm gonna win a lot of money on a UVA win, so I'm not even mad about the result-- it's just a disappointing way for a great game to conclude.
2692768, explaining that rationally sounds like the dumbest shit ever
Posted by will_5198, Mon Apr-08-19 10:48 PM
too bad it's the truth all the time with instant replay. I knew it was going bad when everybody in the booth -- including Steratore -- were fucking memorized looking for strands of cloth that hit the ball, or an extended fingernail, or whatever the fuck you see with microscopic 4k cameras.
2692769, There really needs to be a limit.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 10:50 PM
I'm fine with replay-- but you've got 30 seconds and the players stay on the court, so it's not a proxy timeout. If it's not obvious in 30 seconds, the call stands.
2692772, aside from being soul-suckingly slow
Posted by will_5198, Mon Apr-08-19 10:56 PM
...what is the point? correcting obvious no-calls or inventing shit that suddenly pops up like staring at a fucking 3D illusion painting.

the ball was knocked out of bounds by the opposing player. it wasn't reached for, or made any crazy movement, it just grazed the possessing player's hand in normal fashion as it was knocked out of bounds...by an opposing player.

like what are we even looking for anymore? a pivot foot that moved a centimeter? instant replay is actually distorting the game itself (football is just as bad).
2692775, The UVA players called for the review.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 11:06 PM
And I suspect they called it just to get a free timeout. They probably didn't even expect to get the ball back.
2692773, I just don't understand what's so special about the last 2 minutes.
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Apr-08-19 10:57 PM
Like at 1:55 it matters enough to go to super slow mo to figure out an out of bounds. But not at 6:23?

They should make them all up for review, but give the refs exactly two looks or 30 seconds.
2692776, Or, even easier, have a ref whose sole job is to watch the monitor.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 11:07 PM
That ref has 30 seconds. You don't even need to bring the other refs over or halt the game at all, really.

Granted, they'll never do that. But still.
2692779, Reviewing plays only in the last two minutes is nonsensical.
Posted by smutsboy, Mon Apr-08-19 11:17 PM
2692792, At this point I’d rather have them jump it up or shoot for it
Posted by DJR, Tue Apr-09-19 08:54 AM
That’s how ridiculous the reviews are.
2692770, great game*
Posted by will_5198, Mon Apr-08-19 10:52 PM
fun seeing both teams play their style and come up big at the end. Hunter went off and his match-up ability on defense is absurd. Virginia going from the disgraces of history to national champions is what the tournament is all about.

* see aforementioned rant on instant replay, which through exhaustively inefficient methods we can change the definitions of competitive sports, frame by frame
2692771, That’s....not really the reason we have replay
Posted by DJR, Mon Apr-08-19 10:54 PM
That was absurd. Ruined a great game.
2692777, Meh... Didn't ruin anything, still a great game
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Apr-08-19 11:09 PM
It was bad but honestly it wasn't like the missed double dribble Saturday. they were down 2 with 80 seconds left.
2692778, It's just the culmination of an entire season of awful replay.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Apr-08-19 11:16 PM
It obviously didn't ruin the game entirely, as it was still a tremendously exciting game.

But of course, after a season of awful officiating and even worse reviews, at an integral moment of an exciting overtime championship game, we get a combination of:

1. missed foul that isn't reviewable
2. needlessly lengthy review
3. review requesting by the leading team in a manner that feels more instigated to get a free timeout than anything else
4. call is reversed because when you frame by frame someone knocking a ball away from a guy, it may linger for a split millisecond on the tip of the finger of the guy who had the ball
5. ball taken away from the team on a fast break looking to tie... and given to the leading team who immediately turns it into a two-possession game

Just an incredible combination of basically every facet of review that every NCAA fan has bitched about all season long.

Virginia whacked the ball. Refs missed the Virginia foul. Just give the ball to Texas Tech. Play on. If you can't determine the call after 20 seconds of monitor review, move along.
2692781, WAHOOWA!!!

2692789, VA has really been the best team in the country for 2 seasons
Posted by auragin_boi, Tue Apr-09-19 08:25 AM
They were a combined 66-6 the last 2 yrs, 33-3 in the ACC, 33-3 out of conference. Haven't been ranked outside the top 6 since 1/8/18. Had the lowest opponents point avg for 3 yrs.

They're losses:
61-68 @ #18 WVU
60-61 OT loss at home to VT
54-74 tourney loss to UMBC
70-72 @ #1 Duke
71-81 at home to Duke
59-69 to FSU in the ACC tourney

They improved their offense just enough and games like UMBC were a lot less likely.

Good run by the Cavaliers. Also, a National title game that could have been boring was pretty exciting so there's that as well.

Congrats UVA. ACC brings home another one.
2692811, Just an absolutely obscene run.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Apr-09-19 12:57 PM
One of the best two-year runs I can recall.
