2690208, College Basketball Conference Tournament Week
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Mar-11-19 12:30 PM
Already had some high drama yesterday with the Bradley and Liberty wins.

Big game for Wofford today that bubble teams will want to watch-- and the Monmouth/Iona game could be fun, as King Rice, who never made the tourney with those really good teams, has a chance to make the Dance with a team that started 0-12, lol.

Figured a new post would be good considering the old one is 400+ deep.
2690212, I really don't care about big5/6 conf tournaments
Posted by calminvasion, Mon Mar-11-19 01:51 PM
But will check out some of the 1-bid Leagues

But this is my rest up week before the magic starts
2690221, Watched Liberty punch their ticket to the dance yesterday. Good game.

2690222, Happy that Murray State won the OVC
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Mar-11-19 02:53 PM
Could potentially be a good final in the Horizon tomorrow, if the favorites win tonight.

Gonzaga hasn't missed a WCC championship game since 1997(!)
2690235, Hopeful that Belmont can grab an at-large, but I doubt it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Mar-11-19 03:37 PM
Them and Lipscomb both. Both should be in above some of the shittiest high-major teams... but we all know they both won't.
2690280, Didn’t know JR Reid is on staff with King Rice

2690288, I'm rooting for UNO in the Summit
Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Tue Mar-12-19 12:31 AM
Probably the only chance the state of Nebraska has at representation and since SDSU already lost a headscratcher to Western Illinois, it's a possibility.

Go Omaha!
2690447, St Mary's ball'n (nojinxo)
Posted by calminvasion, Tue Mar-12-19 09:46 PM
2690459, Zags will still be a 1 seed.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Mar-13-19 12:43 AM
It'd take a LOT for them to fall. And if they do fall, they'd be one of if not the strongest 2 seed in NCAA history.
2690472, My mid major Conference Tournament Conspiracy theory still applies
Posted by Ceej, Wed Mar-13-19 06:15 AM
2690479, Boy did St Mary's ever look good last night
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Mar-13-19 08:34 AM
Having not seen them at all, I have no idea if they can keep that going, but it was fun to see.
2690543, The way the used the clock? had me wanting back the 45
Posted by calminvasion, Wed Mar-13-19 02:16 PM
Sec shot clock. The king the shot clock the now opportunity to offset a talent disparity.

And no I don't literally want to go back but there is something beautiful about a team that can run offense for the full shot clock and fully dictate tempo
2690554, Oof, not me.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Mar-13-19 03:44 PM
If you take out that last intentional foul by the Zags, St. Mary's scored under a point per possession that game too. In an only-60 possession game. A lot of awful possessions end of the shot clock down the stretch on both sides. I can't watch games like that consistently lol.
2690623, What a Surprise!
Posted by calminvasion, Thu Mar-14-19 05:58 PM
A fan of the most elite program in the country advocating the removal of a lever that can, in perfect circumstances, offset huge talent disparities.

If two top teams are playing im good with 24 sec clock.

1 vs. 16? give me 45 sec shot clock all day

In all seriousness. I was fine with 35, not sure they need to take another 5 off. And this better be the floor.
2690578, That shit was ugly but effective.
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Mar-13-19 08:50 PM
So what you gotta do to make the dance.

2690579, PITT trying to pull the upset.

Posted by DJR, Thu Mar-14-19 09:11 AM
He’s quietly had a hell of a freshman season in ACC play, and has improved his overall game greatly over the course of the season.
2690601, Dude erased any hope of an upset right before halftime.
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Mar-14-19 01:04 PM
Thought Pitt could go in up 10.
2690603, Yeah, he made some timely shots last night
Posted by DJR, Thu Mar-14-19 01:26 PM
Honestly didn’t expect much from him this year, but he’s legit. He’s going to have a great college career IMO.
2690604, Remember when OSU fans wanted Archie more than Holtmann?
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Mar-14-19 02:08 PM
😂 😂😂
2690614, Com'n. Archie was universally annointed as that Next dude
Posted by calminvasion, Thu Mar-14-19 04:59 PM
By everyone. Can't eblame OSU fans in isolation.

I still think he's good. Just that there's something toxic at IU. Hope he isn't given enough time
2690617, He was anointed because of one tourney run and his name.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Mar-14-19 05:12 PM
Let's be honest. He won the Atlantic 10 ONCE. Routinely the eighth best conference, and he won it once in six years. His best year in KenPom, he ranked 39th. After his Elite Eight run-- which *was* impressive, make no mistake!-- he won one tourney game in the next three years, including losing the last two years consecutive first round games as the higher seed in a 7/10 match.

If he wasn't Sean Miller's brother, the buzz wouldn't have been that crazy.

Meanwhile, Holtmann took a sub-.500 Butler team and made them into the 6th seed the very next season. Got to a 4 seed by his third year. Won at least one NCAA Tournament game *every year* at Butler. Didn't win the Big East-- cuz it's Villanova-- but came in second twice in his three seasons.

Holtmann always had the more obvious resume than Archie. It's why I thought OSU fans should've been relieved when they got Holtmann in the first place.
2690618, harder to win/recruit at Dayton than it is at Butler

Posted by cgonz00cc, Thu Mar-14-19 05:51 PM
2690622, I take great joy in his failures. I also don't by the narrative
Posted by calminvasion, Thu Mar-14-19 05:53 PM
That's it's because he's Sean's brother. WGAF? It's not like he's coach K's brother or something. Sean hasn't even made a final 4 yet.

But I'm all good with Archie being overrated. And I hope they fire him in year three. Keep hitting that reset button, IU!
2690616, To be fair, Archie's resume was just as good, if not better

but yea, I am very pleased.
2690619, Good luck to whomever drafts Romeo in the lottery
Posted by DonVito, Thu Mar-14-19 05:37 PM
Zero passion, .275 from 3, bad D, one handed, a no show in what may have been a play-in game and got worked by Keyshawn Woods over and over down the stretch...just an outright frustrating season from a player who came in so hyped.

That said, the majority of the blame falls on Archie's shoulders. He didn't control the team after they bought into their own hype early in the season (despite being blown out by 30 at Duke) and let the ship tailspin for two fucking months.

The saddest part was seeing Juwan Morgan's last meaningful game as a Hoosier. Guy has done everything ever asked of him and more. Will miss him dearly.
2690698, only watched a few IU games

and to think...TOSU fans were crying over not getting Archie Miller (i honestly wanted us to back the Brinks truck up and go after a big fish)

I like who we got, this was a very rough year and he still somehow got us on bubble watch

and next years recruiting class is great. it's going to be nice to put up points again, tired of seeing so many bricks every fucking game. there isnt a single natural scorer on this team

He gets like 3 more in his career though before something happens. Grayson rules.

Lol at Jay and Greenberg being such whiny bitches about it though. Brissett got elbowed in the head last game and nobody cared.
2690632, The coverage he'll get will be punishment enough.

He's exceptional. Can't recall the last time we've seen a prospect this good in a college uniform.
2690677, A bunch of big games today, especially for the bubble:
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-15-19 12:27 PM
Florida vs. LSU right now. UF's gotta win to be in, imo.

OSU vs. MSU right now. OSU's in decent shape, but a win would absolutely seal the deal, and MSU needs to win to keep their thin 1-seed hopes alive.

Nebraska vs. Wisconsin at 3 PM. Nebrasketball desperately needs another big win.

Auburn vs. South Carolina at 3:30 PM. Weird that the 4 seed in the SEC Tournament has little shot at the tourney when multiple teams behind them in the SEC standings are locks, but yeah, the Cocks need to win the SECT.

Xavier vs. Villanova at 6:30 PM. Xavier's been hot lately, but they've gotta win out to get in. No at-large hopes here. Still, should be an intriguing game-- they beat Nova by double figures last game.

FSU vs. UVA at 7 PM. UVA needs a win to remain the #1 overall seed. I think they'll cruise.

Minnesota vs. Purdue at 7 PM. Minnesota is *probably* okay at this point-- maybe around a 10 seed-- but if you're any projected double digit seed, you're always sweating on Sunday. I think a win here would move them up a line and they'd feel really, really good.

Alabama vs. Kentucky at 7 PM. One of the bigger games of the day. Kentucky is right on the 1 seed cusp, probably in-- but they can't lose this game. Alabama got closer to the field yesterday-- but they too can't lose this game. One team's gonna be sad. (Almost certainly Alabama.)

Iowa State vs. Kansas State at 7 PM. This one's gonna be huge without Dean Wade. I think Iowa State is underrated-- they have a *ton* of talent. I like them to improve their seed line here, and they'll have a real chance to win the whole B12T.

West Virginia vs. Kansas at 9 PM. WVU's had a nightmare season, but they were projected as a Top 3 Big 12 team coming into the season for a reason. They've been clicking the last two games, and Kansas has been reeling for the past month-- could WVU's miracle run continue?

Wichita State vs. Temple at 9 PM. Temple can't lose this game and make the field imo. Gotta advance.

Seton Hall vs. Marquette at 9 PM. Seton Hall is almost certainly in at this point. I just put this here because Markus Howard is fun as shit to watch.

Duke vs. UNC at 9 PM. The Game. First game against them with Zion. Winner gets a 1 seed. Absolute gripping must watch TV.

Iowa vs. Michigan at 9:30 PM. Michigan has a *super* outside shot at a 1 seed, and it involves chaos among the favorites and Michigan winning the Big Ten Tourney-- but I love Michigan's chances at winning the Big Ten Tourney. So there's that.

Mississippi State vs. Tennessee at 9:30 PM. Tennessee's only shot at a 1 seed involves winning the SECT. This is a Sweet 16 caliber game here-- I'd switch to this after Duke/UNC.

Oregon vs. Arizona State at 11:30 PM. Yeah, I don't think the Pac 12 deserves more than 1 team... that said, Arizona State is probably pretty close to in. They just need to make it to a Washington game-- if you lose to anyone other than Washington, you may be out.

2690697, Vols first win against them was one of the best of the season

demoralized them the second half. that was at home though, and the SECT has always been a nightmare for the Vols since I've been alive.

2690692, They're 25th in the NET. 28th in KP. 9-12 against Q1 and Q2.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-15-19 02:58 PM
Top 20 SOS, top 40 NCSOS. That all looks like a tourney resume to me.

They were also an 11 seed in BracketMatrix *before* the LSU win.

I think they're pretty safely in as a 10-11 seed. If I were you, I'd be hoping South Carolina doesn't advance today, because a loss to South Carolina tomorrow would be bad, obviously, but a loss to Auburn likely wouldn't move the needle.
2690694, Nebraska too tired. They're toast.

Posted by calminvasion, Fri Mar-15-19 08:22 PM
I've been low key hating this dude since January. We won the big ten in spite of him.

Bball IQ of a coat rack.

He's had a 4/17, 6/18, 7/31! 3/16, 4/24, 8/27, 4/17. All in the last 5 weeks (we won most of those games!)

He's also not a good defender. Loved the kid last year, but he is just so unaware and just selfish.

Painter takes some blame cuz I think if he put his foot down in December and forced him to be a bit more thoughtful this team would be even better. But he's killed it (paint) this year soI can't get too mad at him.

2690713, Roy is trying to wear Duke out with this pace.

Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-15-19 09:00 PM
What did going to Duke do for him?

Why do all these kids keep going there to be an afterthought?
2690716, i mean...he plays 30 mpg
Posted by cgonz00cc, Fri Mar-15-19 09:40 PM
if he was making 55% of his 2pa instead of 33% he would be a 1st Team AA

i know what you mean, because Charles Matthews, but i dont think Reddish is a good example.
2690717, He’s a role player afterthought
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-15-19 09:42 PM
Sick of all these kids going to the same two schools. Duke and UK ain’t shit.

Their coaching and facilities and program ain’t any better than the other 20-25 great basketball schools out there.

We all know what it really is.
2690719, agree to disagree on Reddish
Posted by cgonz00cc, Fri Mar-15-19 10:10 PM
but otherwise i do agree

especially since i suspect the statistical correlation between 247 composite and the 1st round of the following year's draft is really high.

these kids have already been scouted to death. the top 10 players can play anywhere and be lotto picks. thats whats made being a Michigan fan so fun lately. Beilein truly makes pros. Duncan fuckin Robinson started for the Heat the other night. i dont understand why Michigan isnt bringing in a top 15 kid at least every other year, unless those kids are all getting loot.

but there are other schools i wonder why NBA prospects would go. How many 5* wings have turned into 2nd rd seniors at Michigan State? i legitimately wonder if Izzo undermines their pro status.

finally, lotta folks around here think Tyus Battle secured the bag with Syracuse. thats a head scratcher too. .
2690721, Lol
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-15-19 10:24 PM
Would Tyus even fit with what Michigan does? He fits what Syracuse does a lot better, for better or worse.

Syracuse suspended their star center for the NCAA’s when they were 31-2 and then caught probation over it because that ESL kid(RIP) got too much help writing a research paper and some kids smoked weed and Boeheim didn’t call their parents. They ain’t dropping no bag while on probation on a possible second round pick.

Kenny Anderson and Starbury though......they were made for Cuse back in the day.

to going to school for 5 yrs.

Let’s be real for min.

Still isn’t that much closer to a 1st round pick.

I liked the kid though. If he would’ve stayed and worked he would’ve benefited.

The environment and pressure doesn’t fit with everybody.
2690833, its not even about just Matthews...its about all the "Matthews's"
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sun Mar-17-19 06:27 PM
i know why guys dont want to go play in a 2-3 zone, but guys like Nick Richards, Immanuel Quickley, and Jemarl Baker were destined to be lost in the sauce. there are 5* recruits going undrafted from schools that are stocked with them while Michigan sends 51 and lower guys to the league with regularity. the only 2 non-freshmen Cal guys to get drafted in the first round are Terrence Jones and WCS. the only non-FR draftees at Duke over the same span are Nolan Smith and 5* white Americans. if youre still on the roster in your second year, youre cooked. unless youre the Duke senior white hype.

going to KU/Duke/UNC/UK is bad business for at least 25% of those signees. that cant be argued. meanwhile Michigan appears to be good business for just about everyone, and has as many postseason wins as anyone over the last 6-7 years. something is up when theyre lucky to get one top 50 recruit per year. and even when something is not up, say Jordan Tucker at Duke...like wtf are you doing? bad business.
2690845, All the Matthews? Lmao... C'mon. He's about a smidge closer the 1st rd...
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Mar-17-19 10:16 PM
5 yrs later.

Nick Richards and Immanuel Quickley play quality minutes for UK. Which is greater than playing 30 mins for any other school in the country. The experience they're getting is invaluable. And they're making progress. Some players it takes longer than others. And that's okay.

Michigan sends 51 and lower guys to the league to be what exactly? Future Mo Wagners?

Cal hasn't sent a lot of non-freshman 1st rd, because they all leave after freshman year. You think Cal wants to re-recruit an entire roster every year? Lol... you don't think he wanted 2nd year James Young or Marquis Teague or Skal Labissiere or Jarred Vanderbilt? He's just too good at what he does.

If you're still on the roster your 2nd year your cooked.

2690715, How was Nasir Little a top 10 recruit?
Posted by calminvasion, Fri Mar-15-19 09:23 PM
What does he do well? Is even that athletic?
2690748, Idk man that dude is a sabotage whenever he's on the court.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sat Mar-16-19 01:43 PM
Def the worst of our freshman class. Shame leaky has been hurt most of the season
2690755, Better question... how is he still a lottery pick?
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sat Mar-16-19 02:34 PM
2690720, ESPN only has cartoon graphics for Zion? That’s crazy
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Mar-15-19 10:20 PM
2690723, Fuck. We blew this one
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Mar-15-19 10:35 PM
2690724, LET'S FUCKING GO!!!!
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-15-19 10:35 PM
So many things didn't go our way and we still fucking won. Thank the fucking Lord. Great play from Zion, Goldwire, and Vrank. Need Reddish to figure it out for tomorrow.
2690725, Well, one of them lost so that’s good
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-15-19 10:36 PM
Go Noles.

Fuck BoJangles.
2690743, UNBELIEVABLE slate of games today.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Mar-16-19 12:24 PM
Vermont already knocked out UMBC, much to Virginia's relief.

MSU up early on Wisconsin, but they're getting good looks, I expect them to claw back.

Norfolk State taking on NC Central for the MEAC auto-bid. Norfolk State's the favorite, but you can never count Moton out.

The SEC Tourney at 1 and 3:30. Florida/Auburn and Tennessee/Kentucky, respectively. Both should be really tight, with the second game potentially for a 1 seed. High drama here.

Houston vs. Memphis at 3. Houston has been great, but Memphis has really been coming on, and the auto-bid is Penny's only chance to dance this year. I expect this to be closer than people would think.

San Diego State vs. Utah State at 6 on CBS. Really upset we didn't get Nevada/Utah St again, as those dudes *do not* like one another... but instead, we get an exciting bid stealer in the mix. SDSU has some real talent and length too. Could get exciting.

Iowa State vs. Kansas. 6 PM on ESPN. Kansas trying to avenge the streak losing... but ISU is the rare Big 12 team with the depth of talent to hang with Kansas. Should be a great chess match.

Seton Hall vs. Villanova, 6:35 PM on FOX. Nova should have this sealed up, but Myles Powell has been on a TEAR. Willard pulls out magic in games like these. I expect Gus Johnson on the call, so we can expect magic.

FSU vs. Duke, 8:30 PM on ESPN. FSU has Duke beat on size and depth, so after an exhausting game yesterday, don't be surprised if Duke comes out flat. Hopefully they have the gas in the tank to make their usual second half push and put it away.

A ton of other auto-bid conference title games tonight too: the SWAC, Sun Belt, CUSA, Pac-12, Southland and WAC games should all be super evenly matched. The MAC, Big Sky, and Big West, less so... but strange things happen in March. Any time it's a game to dance, wild shit can go down.
2690750, Egregious no-call at the end of Florida/Auburn.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Mar-16-19 02:02 PM
Absolutely absurd. Nembhard should've had a chance at the FT line to send the game to OT.

Whew. SEC officiating. Rough.
2690759, fuck Florida but JFC
Posted by will_5198, Sat Mar-16-19 03:11 PM
new wrinkle to the "foul or defend the three": just mug a guy so brazenly the SEC official calls nothing
2690751, HBCU love. North Carolina Central back in the dance
Posted by Beezo, Sat Mar-16-19 02:10 PM
3 years straight
2690752, Moton is a monster. So good in those tourney situations.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Mar-16-19 02:17 PM
2690756, He’s damn good.
Posted by Beezo, Sat Mar-16-19 02:42 PM
2690763, Michigan either flipped a switch, or...
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Mar-16-19 04:01 PM
thats the just the difference Matthews makes

im inclined to think its a little of both
2690766, VOLS, BITCH
Posted by will_5198, Sat Mar-16-19 04:37 PM
that was an Elite Eight, Final Four type game
2690773, im annoyed both B10 and both SEC games were simultaneous
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Mar-16-19 04:54 PM
2690767, That was a grown man ass win by Tennessee
Posted by Beezo, Sat Mar-16-19 04:38 PM
2690768, lol, WTF is wrong with Jay Williams
Posted by will_5198, Sat Mar-16-19 04:46 PM
postshow after the Tennessee-Kentucky game:

"PJ Washington misses the shot to tie...that's one Zion Williamson made last night"

WHAT IN THE BLUE FUCK DOES ZION WILLIAMSON HAVE TO DO WITH THE SEC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS
2690771, Lol... he's a douchebag.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sat Mar-16-19 04:51 PM
2690772, Good win by Tenn. But the refs took that one from us.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sat Mar-16-19 04:54 PM
The charge on Keldon when PJ made the 3 would've put us up by 10.
The bad call when Grant Williams lowered his shoulder into Reid Travis that was called on Reid.
Then the phantom 5th foul on Reid.

Oh well. Reid could definitely use the rest and get ready for next Thurs or Fri.

1 seed or 2 seed. I don't care.
2690774, SEC refs. no consistency, but they let them play the last two minutes.
Posted by will_5198, Sat Mar-16-19 05:07 PM
first half had good flow, second half was bad until the end. phantom calls on both sides.

in a game that close you can point to any one thing, but refs didn't make Herro travel or Johnson turn it over during Tennessee's final run.

Vols out-executed them (18-6 run to close it out) and only two fouls were called for Tennessee that weren't intentional.
2690775, True. I think Cal should've subbed Tyler out for Quickley once y'all...
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sat Mar-16-19 05:11 PM
started pressuring us.

But with no Travis it changed the game for us. And those bad calls kept y'all in it.

Oh well. Good luck tomorrow.
2690776, I agree that Travis is the biggest difference maker
Posted by will_5198, Sat Mar-16-19 05:16 PM
when UT-UK play. Tennessee doesn't have another low post that can deal with his physical style -- he dominated the Rupp game and Tennessee was able to do whatever they wanted when he missed the Knoxville rematch.
2690778, Yup. Get another ball handler in the game.
Posted by Beezo, Sat Mar-16-19 06:17 PM

2690794, What a game. Superb performances by Zion and Tre.

We’ve got a great shot at the 1 seed in the East, which is exactly where we’d like to be. Just a great couple of days.
2690803, SMH, Yale just better. I really thought Amaker
Posted by calminvasion, Sun Mar-17-19 11:38 AM
Going down to the ivy would have the crimson dominating. I know Towns being out is a problem, but Yale had been consistently the better team over his tenure.

Score still close but not hopeful
2690805, Really fun half on bball. But point still stands
Posted by calminvasion, Sun Mar-17-19 11:48 AM
Still hopeful but they're the better team
2690816, Bruce Pearl owns Tennessee.
Posted by will_5198, Sun Mar-17-19 01:42 PM
looking to be 3-0 in the last two years -- those three losses directly denied Tennessee an outright SEC championship, share of SEC championship, and SEC tournament championship.

losing is one thing, but it's amazing how deep Auburn is in Tennessee's head. Auburn plays fast, Tennessee hurries and panics. Auburn hits their threes, Tennessee abandons offense and tries to jump-shoot. even simple stuff, like careless turnovers on passes.

just total domination.
2690826, lol cmon
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sun Mar-17-19 04:40 PM
2690827, Beilein either got outcoached a bit, or
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sun Mar-17-19 05:09 PM
outcoached himself. iggy on mcquaid and matthews on goins was a terrible plan. i think it was to hide Iggy from PnR, but he got burned trying to chase McQuaid around screens.

still dont fully understand how this state team beat this UM team home/neutral/road, but there's your mostly undisputed B10 champ. how thats not a 1 seed is beyond me.
