2689343, LOL@respect, Trae will finish 2nd in ROTY voting
Posted by bentagain, Thu Feb-28-19 06:49 PM
but MB3 and Ayton are on this list...and he's not

How Sway?

They were traded for each other, right...?

It's just a natural agenda, I'm getting in on the ground floor

30 and 10, 3Xs...that's what he could do.

+1, Trae just put up back to back 36pt games...put some respek on it
2689344, yeah on ESPN they just said he's the 1st rookie since Iverson...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Feb-28-19 06:53 PM

Get on that Darko summer workout program

...and come back next year with the same muscle definition as Vlade Divac...

This is a long term agenda

I was completely skeptical of Trae having success in the NBA as a Steph clone

I'm betting on him putting in the work and eventually being clearly better than Luka

I'm betting on Luka flaming out.

NBA Rookie Power Rankings: Trae Young takes top spot from Luka Doncic after entertainingly productive week
Doncic was no slouch, but Young had his best week as a pro to earn top honors

Between the trade deadline, the Rising Stars game and the All-Star break, it's been almost a month since we've done a traditional Rookie Rankings. And, boy, did we pick a good time to jump back in.

MVP Rankings: George remains best value bet
Rookie of the Year favorite Luka Doncic has received some stiff competition as of late, particularly from Hawks guard Trae Young, who has become must-watch entertainment for a suddenly very promising Atlanta squad. Young was so great this week that he took the top spot in the rankings, so often occupied by Doncic. Much more on his rapid ascent below.

Another rookie making some serious noise is Sacramento forward Marvin Bagley, who put together a string of phenomenal games this week before suffering a knee sprain. And while the injury to Jaren Jackson Jr. will unfortunately keep him out a while, that opens the door for more rookies to get into the rankings, which is always fun as the season heads into the home stretch.

THIS WEEK'S NBA ROOKIE POWER RANKINGS
1
Trae Young
ATLANTA HAWKS PG
Last ranking: 6
Stats this week: 31.3 points, 9.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds

The Trae Young Show has officially arrived in the NBA. Every wildest hope and lofty ceiling regarding Young came to fruition in four games over the past week, as the 20-year-old set career highs with 36 points and eight 3-pointers in a loss to the Rockets, then followed it up with 36 again in the very next game -- a comeback win over the Timberwolves. Young has been brilliant, but the key is that instead of his increased scoring hindering his playmaking and passing ability, it's actually bolstered it. Teams have occasionally been throwing soft traps at Young (not uncommon for point guards of his size), and since he's been so good at throwing lobs to rolling bigs, teams have cut off the lane as well. So what has Young done? He's been patient, flinging cross-court lefty passes on time and on target to waiting open shooters.

Young probably won't average 30 points per game for the rest of the season, but he's shown that he can be a consistent scorer, shooter and playmaker while leading his team to wins, and that's a terrific sign for the Hawks.

Here comes Trae Young

Young navigated the first two months of the season with a strange caution. He jacked 3-pointers out of the pick-and-roll at an average-ish rate for a starting point guard. He barely tried step-backs.

It wasn't, like, a crisis. Young knew how to leverage the threat of his 3-point shot to set up both drives and cuts, and immediately established himself as an elite passer with both hands. (Seriously: He has every pass, and he releases the ball a beat earlier or later -- depending on what does the most damage -- than the typical NBA point guard. Such quirky timing is the mark of genius in a passer.) Atlanta wanted Young to build his game inside-out.

But skills are interconnected. Young proving himself a dangerous, unpredictable off-the-bounce bomber would force defenses to pressure him more -- and unlock easier drive-and-kick opportunities. Shooting enables passing.

Young has gotten frisky.

Since Jan. 1, Young is jacking 3s out of the pick-and-roll about six times per 100 Atlanta possessions -- fourth most in the league (behind James Harden, Kemba Walker and D'Angelo Russell), and about double his early-season rate, per Second Spectrum. He made five step-back 3s in his first 34 games -- tied for 38th. He has made 12 in his past 28 games -- seventh most in that span, per Second Spectrum.

Young averaged 23 points and nine dimes in February on 44 percent shooting from deep, and capped the month with back-to-back 36-point eruptions. And this not a case of someone piling up numbers by breaking the offense on a tanking team. Atlanta is 15-18 in its past 33 games. Young hunting for more shots has made the Hawks better.

The amped-up Young has certainly helped John Collins. Collins is shooting 60 percent with Young on the floor, and just 47 percent otherwise, per NBA.com.

This is the Young the Hawks envisioned when they made a franchise-defining bet on draft night.
2689332, Any top list with Ball on it doesn’t even deserve a response.

better PER, true shooting, VORP and BPM than booker, murray and brown.

and since recovering fully from the elbow injury and the coaching change, lauri legend is having a better year 2 than tatum, fox and spyda.

sipping my tea tho.
2689361, Oh, damn. Yeah, he should be a little under Mitchell and around Booker

2689366, natl media doesn't really fuck w dude for whatever reason
Posted by dula dibiasi, Thu Feb-28-19 10:26 PM
btwn the reaction to the trade, the reaction to the contract, and the constant omission from lists like these.

not sure what it is.
2689370, It’s prettt clear most national media don’t watch players in detail
Posted by LA2Philly, Thu Feb-28-19 11:08 PM
A lot of these lists are just based on old cliches about the player rather than how they’re actually playing. Once that narrative gets locked in, it takes a ridiculous amount of swinging the needle to actually move the needle on a national scale. You see it both ways for guys like Jaylen and Tatum on one end who get the benefit of all the doubt vs Lavine and BI who get none.
2689363, Jaylen Brown over Lavine is funny.

since he's been handed the primary playmaking duties, he's done well with them (5.8 apg, 2.4 topg in february) while maintaining his scoring volume, with a nice spike in efficiency (24.5 ppg on 63.9% true shooting)

his 2 man game with lauri has also leveled up. and still only 23.

that contact everyone mocked will be one of the biggest bargains in the league by the time it's ending.
2689372, He nice. He *was* historically bad and weird, though

So he getting dinged for some of the weirdest
early seasons ever
2689371, Find me a GM who likes Bagley and Levert the same amount.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-01-19 12:43 AM
Also, if we're being honest, the Lakers would trade Kyle Kuzma for Marvin Bagley straight up and do a goddamn Irish jig about it.

The problem with these sorts of lists is that very little projection comes into play. Which I guess I get... but like, how is 21-year-old Lauri below 24-year-old Pascal Siakam? Word? How in the name of sweet baby Jesus is Jaylen Brown over Brandon Ingram? And people can call me crazy, I suppose, but there are at least two people above DeAaron Fox on this list that shouldn't be. Fox turned 21 TWO MONTHS AGO, fam.
2689381, Jaylen Brown shouldn't be on this list
Posted by auragin_boi, Fri Mar-01-19 09:08 AM
Ingram should be at least top 15 and Trae Young should replace somebody.

I know laker fans love Kuz but I think he is what he is and won't get much better. Where he is, is good...decent role player that can pop off on occasion.

Trae going to get better and he'll be better than Kuz IMO.

2 off, 2 on.

And to Dula's point...LaVine has a legit case as well. Not to mention Wendell Carter Jr. could be just as good or better than JJJ.
