2682381, NFL Coaching Carousel Post

Guess we starting early. When do people start asking if maybe it's Elway?
https://www.milehighreport.com/2018/12/20/18150633/broncos-vance-joseph-to-be-fired
2682382, Denver's a mess
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Dec-21-18 03:22 PM
Between Elway's inability to find a coach/draft a QB and Pat Bowlen's entire family about to tear each other apart to see who gets to run the team, that next coach is a dead man walking.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but is Cleveland the most attractive opening? Because whoever goes to GB is going to be expected to immediately get back to the Super Bowl while Rodgers still has some good years left.
2682385, huge mess
Posted by HecticHavoc, Fri Dec-21-18 03:29 PM
i have said so many times -- imagine the turmoil had Peyton chosen Arizona or a different city?? Elway hasnt displayed any sense whatsoever on drafting good players or evaluating QB talent.

2682407, Elway kind of sucks but Vance wasn't no prize either.
Posted by will_5198, Fri Dec-21-18 08:23 PM

2682777, Packers interviewed...Chuck Pagano?
Posted by will_5198, Thu Dec-27-18 04:17 PM
Pagano in Indianapolis:

- Handcuffed one of the best QB prospects in the last decade and told everyone their goal was to "pound the rock" with Trent Richardson

- Came from Baltimore as a defensive coach and never fielded a good defense in six years at Indianapolis

- Called one of the worst fake punts in the history of modern football (https://twitter.com/PeteBlackburn/status/947601456152174592)

so what exactly from his half-decade in Indianapolis showed he is going to fix Green Bay?
2682779, SMH if the Cards actually fire their coach
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Dec-27-18 04:29 PM
First season on a rebuilding team with a rookie QB, can't really hold it against him.
2682781, its more layered than that
Posted by HecticHavoc, Thu Dec-27-18 04:44 PM
this was an 8-8 team last year and 13 win team in 2015. Arians brought a culture to the team. practiced super hard.

this is just a different team. unprepared weekly. always outplayed. always outmatched in the trenches.

Rosen is getting worse game by game. playcalling is still terrible even after firing the coordinator midseason.

this team is a flatout dumpster fire, and compared to recent years, its pretty clear theres a coaching issue here.
2682782, not asking this to be flippant with YOU, but...
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Dec-27-18 04:49 PM
why are Fitz and the gang riding for him so hard? You think it's more just Fitz trying to be a good dude, but most players would be fine with him Wilkes being gone?
2682783, yeah ive definitely noticed it, but cmon, Fitz is the best
Posted by HecticHavoc, Thu Dec-27-18 04:51 PM
literally like the best human to ever live on Earth. he would never show disrespect to anybody like that publicly.

theres a lot of local reporting saying its the other way. ive watched every single game. this team played with a "fire under its ass" every single game in the Arians years. this team is just embarrassing, effort wise, this year. that has to mean somethin.
2682784, Haven't watched them much, so thanks for this
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Dec-27-18 04:56 PM
And maybe they could do better. It's just always weird when a coach gets fired after one season, on a team that nobody thought would be any good this year.
2682787, im not an adament Wilkes hater tho
Posted by HecticHavoc, Thu Dec-27-18 05:02 PM
i would rather see Keim (the GM) go and give Wilkes one more year, and an off-season, with Byron and Rosen to work together. Keim made like 2 good decisions in 2014 and he acts like he's fucking Jesus now.

cut Honey B, signed BRADFORD TO A DUMPTRUCK OF GOLD, let go key o-linemen, signed terrible linemen. didn't resign Tony Jefferson, just a few minor things ive thought about in the last 30 seconds.
2682812, Keim should definitely go
Posted by cp900, Fri Dec-28-18 12:37 AM
I think there are two things that Wilks has to be responsible for directly: 1) Hiring McCoy, who has been consistently terrible before this season, and 2) Bringing a style of defense that relies on Keuchly and Thomas Davis-level LBs and being unable/unwilling(?) to adjust to what Arizona has on the fly.

Since they aren't going to fire Keim, he deserves another year to figure out what the OC situation is going to be and see if they can fix the O-line.

I also think they are probably too high on Rosen, though hard to gauge that with the O-line being so awful this year.

but then again, Tomlin has been coach for how long now? more than 10 years. the tale of the 2018 Steelers has basically been aging, and personnel troubles

2682852, He’s lost 12 coaching challenges in a row.

Bruce Allen needs to go first.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2683165, I think he gets at least one more year
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Mon Dec-31-18 10:55 AM
He's extended through 2020 and Snyder (and Allen) are focused on finding a location for the new stadium in 2028.

I think Jay stays until the team secures a location for the stadium. At that point, they'll probably be even more motivated to build a winning team because they don't want to open a new stadium into a declining fan base situation.

If the front office can execute (big question), they've got the time to still build a consistently winning team before they start selling tickets to the new stadium.

They could find a real GM in the next couple years and relieve Allen of all football duties. That GM could then replace Jay either in '20 or '21. Hell, the GM could replace the replacement in 2025 and still give the new guy a couple years to build some momentum before the new stadium opens.
2683167, Team Jay Gruden captain here
Posted by bshelly, Mon Dec-31-18 10:59 AM
It’s his fault his top 2 quarterbacks got hurt? No one does more with less talent.
2683174, Jay Gruden has had talented teams shit the bed before.
Posted by B.J.S.301, Mon Dec-31-18 11:51 AM
Team come unprepared to play and he's slow to make adjustments. And they are heavily penalized. I hate undisciplined teams and every season shows me that he's smart, but doesn't have a handle on being a consistently disciplined team.
2683194, mostly agree with that
Posted by smutsboy, Mon Dec-31-18 01:04 PM
but is there anyone out there who'll do better with this shitty team?

I think he's a great offensive coach and a mediocre head coach.

Unless there's a great candidate out there who is a masochist and for some reason wants to work for Allen/Snyder, I'd keep Tommy Boy for now.

Guess it also depends on the QB situation. If they draft a new one, is Gruden the right guy for that job?

But until Allen (and Snyder) are gone, this is all window dressing.
2683232, I think Gruden is decent when it comes to developing QBs
Posted by B.J.S.301, Mon Dec-31-18 05:15 PM
So I would have him stick around for that. But they gotta draft a QB that fits a West Coast style of play. That's gonna be a tough one for Bruce to do.

I guess he's not in the awful territory. Just painfully mediocre. Like Ernie Grunfeld.
2683196, Talent in Washington? FOH
Posted by bshelly, Mon Dec-31-18 01:18 PM
Dan Snyder rosters don’t have top to bottom talent. Two receivers and a tight end shouldn’t fool you.
2683197, until massive injuries
Posted by smutsboy, Mon Dec-31-18 01:30 PM

NFL is a whole different thing than NCAA, so maybe he's more suited to it? We'll see

Posted by HecticHavoc, Wed Jan-09-19 12:27 PM
if he fucks up another draft, really curious to see what the Bowlens do about it (probably nothing)
2684078, he may be a great coach but I think you're over estimating it
Posted by smutsboy, Wed Jan-09-19 12:28 PM
No defense with that roster will be bad.

And finishing in first place only applies to two of the 16 games next year. Depending on the division, it may not even matter.
2684080, Part of the reason the roster was excelling was the scheme continuity
Posted by select_from_where, Wed Jan-09-19 12:45 PM
Fangio's scheme is very particular, and we don't really have "multiple" players in this defense, everyone has the play their role

if management tries to mold this scheme for a different DC next year, we are absolutely going back in the dumpster
2684089, hire someone who runs a similar scheme
Posted by smutsboy, Wed Jan-09-19 02:09 PM
and let the talent keep excelling at what it's good at.

There may be a drop off, but unless they hire Jim Zorn the defense will still be very good.
2684127, I had no idea he coached the Dome Patrol in Nawlins

Posted by CyrenYoung, Sun Jan-13-19 01:15 PM
..I'm not exactly excited about Arians, but admittedly, I've been intrigued about Leftwich and his approach to coaching.

Should be interesting to see his impact on Winston.
