2679932, College Football Coaching Carousel 2018
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Nov-26-18 10:21 AM
It's that time of year again. Les Miles has been hired at Kansas, Texas Tech, Louisville, Colorado and Maryland all have openings and Mack Brown is going back to UNC? Duke's got to make a move and hire Larry Coker or someone now.
2679942, UNC made my chest hurt before 10am on a Monday.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Nov-26-18 10:34 AM
that is impressive. Mack Part 2 is going to be a disaster. these niggas aint even do their due diligence on the market just to see what's out there.
2679946, LOL...bro, I damn near crashed the whip...
Posted by Dstl1, Mon Nov-26-18 11:06 AM
laughing when I heard UNC was bring Mack Brown back. Dude looked like the living embodiment of "I'm too old for this shit", 8 years ago. Strangely...he's the same age as Saban. I guess winning gives you that glow.
2679949, WOW
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Nov-26-18 11:15 AM
>Strangely...he's the same age as Saban.

I seriously would've guessed he had a decade on Saban.

Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Nov-26-18 02:30 PM
the spin on IC right now is that Fedora burned all our bridges with NC high schools so Mack is supposed to get us back in their good graces and set us up for the next coach.
2680243, your next coach will likely be Mike Houston who is currently at JMU (FCS)
Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Nov-29-18 03:49 PM
he's going to take the UNC-Charlotte job so he'll have some FBS experience when Mack either gets canned, retires or croaks.

2680022, at least one less
Posted by will_5198, Mon Nov-26-18 08:37 PM
ECU will probably fire Scottie Montgomery after next week

good guy and I liked the hire (Duke OC under Cutcliffe), but Pirates have been just flat out bad for three years now

he's 2-2 against the ACC, funnily enough
2680093, Does Kingsbury to the NFL make sense?
Posted by Ceej, Tue Nov-27-18 04:12 PM
2680095, As on OC?
Posted by The Real, Tue Nov-27-18 04:13 PM

2680101, no. Mahomes gunslinging in that kind of offense won't work in the NFL

/sarcasm

2680166, reports that a LOT of teams already offered him a job
Posted by HecticHavoc, Wed Nov-28-18 02:42 PM
seems like he is one of the most 'hire-able' people in CFB or NFL right now
2680242, Sounds like he's going to be the new OC at USC
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Nov-29-18 03:41 PM
Possible coach-in-waiting after they fire Helton next year?
2680249, good hire
Posted by HecticHavoc, Thu Nov-29-18 05:00 PM
should help with recruiting too
2680104, USC OC Tee Martin fired
Posted by will_5198, Tue Nov-27-18 07:35 PM
not surprising since he was demoted midseason. he went from a longshot Tennessee HC candidate to out of favor pretty quickly...now he won't even get a look as Tennessee's offensive coordinator due to his ties to USC (former OC Tyson Helton was the QB coach with Martin at USC in 2017 and then led a bad UT offense in 2018).

2680165, Paul Johnson retirement appears imminent
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Nov-28-18 02:19 PM
he was our best coach since Bobby Dodd, and did things with nobodies that Gailey and O'Leary couldnt do with blue chippers

i keep seeing Ken Whisenhunt's name and it makes me real uneasy. Monken and Nieumatololo HAVE to be the first calls, but KN may not want to be Butch Jones to PJ's Brian Kelly. there are talented option QBs on the roster, but nothing else. i suppose a spread n shred could work, but a "modern" offense leads us to 0-12 next year at worst, or perpetual 8-4 at best.
2680184, confirmed. godspeed you ol sonofabitch.
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Nov-28-18 07:25 PM
3 Coastal titles, 1 ACC chip, 2 Orange Bowls (1 win), beat UGA 3 times after Gailey never did, 5-7 record vs Dabo which has to be #1 in the conference by a mile

Heisman, Dodd, Johnson, Ross.

wish id been in school while he had been there.

2680180, Jeff Brohm STAYING at Purdue
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Nov-28-18 06:46 PM
Just not a good year for Louisville in any respects.
2680182, I spent basically all day on Twitter. Incredibly unproductive
Posted by calminvasion, Wed Nov-28-18 07:00 PM
But yo! JB about to lock down this top 25 class and adding to it!
I just want two more years, not being greedy.

He's also getting a top 10/15 CFB salary now and I'm totally good with it. Mitch Daniels (only Republican I like) and our AD have not been playing around.

Posted by Marauder21, Thu Nov-29-18 04:00 PM
I don't know, a successful young coach who is already in my state and has a current relationship with local high schools would seem to be a no-brainer, but when you've got a chance to hire a guy who hasn't coached in five years . . .
2680250, apparently Mack setup Fedora's buyout. there was never a coaching search

Colorado to hire UGA DC Mel Tucker
Maryland very strongly looking at Bama OC Mike Locksley.

Locksley was a trainwreck at UNM, but that was years ago and he's got Saban's blessing and developed their first genuine stud QB. He could make the Terps a consistent bowl team at least.
2680586, I think Locksley is gonna get it
Posted by Tiger Woods, Sun Dec-02-18 08:05 AM
We had him as an OC years ago and I think if the school could do it all over they would’ve just kept him as a head coach
2680657, ECU hires Mike Houston (James Madison HC)
Posted by will_5198, Sun Dec-02-18 06:58 PM
I like that he's won championships at nearly all of his stops. Plenty of head coaching experience, which was important since his predecessor at ECU had none. Born in North Carolina and been a HS and college coach there for years, which is huge when it comes to in-state recruiting.
2680746, Word. Chatter around here was probably UNC Charlotte.

smart hire by lynn swann
2680984, And Locksley to Maryland is official
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Dec-05-18 09:10 AM
I'll admit I'm a LITTLE surprised that they're officially replacing the coach that got a player killed with the guy who punched one of his assistants, if only for the optics. But he's got that Saban shine on him now and it was long enough ago. If Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian could keep getting jobs, no reason he shouldn't, plus he's more familiar with the area than most.

2681236, Is cgonz00cc on the Geoff Collins train?
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Dec-07-18 08:32 PM
GT hired a guy named Geoff, he was at Temple the last couple years, they were pretty good in the American under him.

Defensive guy, so who knows what kind of offense they'll have.
2681262, i am conflicted.
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Dec-08-18 12:27 PM
he was our recruiting coordinator when we signed our best class of the last 15-20 years (the Josh Nesbitt, Jonathan Dwyer, Morgan Burnett, Derrick Morgan group) and he knows Tech.

But his actual teams have not blown me away. We shredded his Miss St defense in the Orange Bowl 4 years ago, and then the Rudock-led Michigan team in 2015 shredded his UF defense in that Citrus Bowl.

So...i dunno. We are pretty niche-built roster wise on offense but hes already talking "NFL style" offense. I love his attitude and approach, but im not sure about the method.

Im in hardcore wait and see mode.

2683163, Biggest change he didn't want to make is the offense
Posted by The Real, Mon Dec-31-18 10:39 AM
His refusal to change it has caused him to lose out on some top recruits and top transfer Kelly Bryant.

Apparently he was asked about his offense and his response was, "These plays have worked for years..." He basically refuses to believe it's stagnant.

I’m hearing Kliff Kingsbury is interviewing with NFL teams, which likely means he has resigned as USC offensive coordinator. USC was blocking him from interviewing foe NFL head coaching openings @NFLonFOX

smart offensive guy, maybe the premier one in college, so I get that part

but he had very little pressure on his shoulders at Tech and still couldn't even get them to .500 the last three years

2683795, OU gave Grinch 1.5 million
Posted by 3xKrazy, Mon Jan-07-19 05:14 PM
kinda interesting given that Grinch accomplished nothing as a coach and as a recruiter at OSU and his position unit (safeties) was absolutely wretched along with some horrible personnel decisions.

I guess Schiano takes the blame for everything here?
2683851, he seemed to have done a good job at Wazzu
Posted by will_5198, Mon Jan-07-19 10:05 PM
he's also used to coordinating a defense that has to deal with a quick-possession offense, which he'll deal with in Norman.

we'll find out if he was a symptom of Ohio State's 2018 defense or just stuck in a bad situation.

>I guess Schiano takes the blame for everything here?

more or less. but either way Schiano was only at Ohio State because of Meyer, so had the Buckeyes been good on defense this season he'd still probably be out.
2683890, i dont agree with this

>
2683910, Schiano definitely was only at Ohio State because of Meyer
Posted by will_5198, Tue Jan-08-19 12:03 AM
like...that was openly admitted by both of them. Schiano kept his name warm at a high profile program and Meyer got an associate HC to CEO his defense.

now that Meyer is gone, the deal doesn't make sense for Ohio State, Day or Schiano. regardless of the on-field results, Day has no connection to Schiano and isn't going to let his one (only) big HC shot go up in flames or undermined by a gruff veteran who has been a NFL HC.

likewise, Schiano has bigger aspirations than caddying a 39-year-old's college defense and isn't going to wait around and get blamed a la Mike Stoops and Lincoln Riley.
2683912, do you have a quote on this?
Posted by 3xKrazy, Tue Jan-08-19 12:07 AM
>like...that was openly admitted by both of them. Schiano kept
>his name warm at a high profile program and Meyer got an
>associate HC to CEO his defense.

I've never once heard the suggestion that meyer was doing schiano a fire by hiring him a la zach smith or billy davis.

and his defenses were very productive up until this year. its not like he wasn't carrying his weight up until this year.

if the defense didnt require a full house cleaning i see no reason why he couldn't have stayed.
2683914, did not equate him to Smith or imply it was a "favor"
Posted by will_5198, Tue Jan-08-19 12:14 AM
it was a mutually beneficially agreement. but almost entirely based on the relationship between Meyer and Schiano. I mean shit, at the time Fickell was still the DC and Schiano took a co-coordinator role.

2015: "I had been a head coach for 13 years and then after the NFL had done some TV work with ESPN and with NFL Network," said Schiano. "Truthfully, as an assistant, it really would only have been with very few people. And Coach Meyer being at the head of the list."

"I have a history with Coach Meyer that goes back pretty far and we’re both closely aligned in our beliefs." Schiano said. "So, I think it’s going to be a great situation."

2017: "(Schiano) was offered two head coaching jobs -- two significant head coaching jobs -- and he made a decision to come back," Meyer said. "I've known Greg for a long time -- and he's a head coach. He will be a head coach (again)."

"I'm going to keep him as long as I can," Meyer said. "I thought he was one of the best I've ever been around. He's a little better than that. That's how good of a coach he is."
2684004, Ok i guess i misinterpreted your initial statement
Posted by 3xKrazy, Tue Jan-08-19 05:55 PM
and while neither of us can prove this i think Schiano (and Grinch) for that matter could've and would've been retained had things gone well this past season. instead it was a clusterfuck and I'm not sure who is responsible for what. I will say that whoever started Jahsen Wint (#23) at safety should've been fired on the spot and barred from campus.

>I mean
>shit, at the time Fickell was still the DC and Schiano took a
>co-coordinator role.

Nah, Fickell was co-DC in name only. That was Chris Ash's defense.

I'm neutral to the move, although I thought he did a solid job back in his first stint with Dooley.

Georgia's passing offense wasn't as good as the talent these past two seasons, however. and Tennessee will not have the personnel to overwhelm teams like Georgia has.
2684036, lol

Not even passing judgement, but old Jimbo always makes me laugh, funny and funny-looking dude.

He does seems to do his best work early, his last couple of years at Purdue were very lackluster and overly conservative.

Only 56? Interesting, he was only 35 in 97? Crazy, he never looked that young.
2684065, Can't be worse than Helton...

Hopefully Pruitt doesn't handcuff him too much.
This does give me flashbacks to the worst UT defense I've ever seen under Sunseri. Chaney would put up like 35 points a game and still lose.
2684178, Tate Martell joins Jalen Hurts in the transfer portal
Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Thu Jan-10-19 02:24 PM
interesting, thought it was a possibility with Fields joining but I didn't think he would make the call for it
2684181, martell talked aaaall daaaaat shiiiit. and then ran from Fields to the hills lol.

2684182, His first name is TATHAN?
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Jan-10-19 04:14 PM
2684183, looks like this is workin out splendidly for Fields
Posted by HecticHavoc, Thu Jan-10-19 04:30 PM
losing another potential QB competition candidate (after this Tathan Tate Taterson kid talked shit and ran off)

OSU would need another transfer, they'd be pretty thin behind Fields
2684192, lmao.

2684672, DA YOO

Maybe this means Jalen Hurts is going to Maryland.
2684692, If Martell has to sit out a year...
Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Wed Jan-16-19 01:17 PM
If I was Hurts it would be Miami or Oklahoma, he doesn't have a chance to win shit in College Park with Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State in the same division
2684695, Supposedly Miami and Maryland were his top two choices
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Jan-16-19 01:34 PM
Due to them hiring Bama's former QB coach and OC, respectively.

Edit, nevermind, it looks like's OU bound.
2684674, bottomline never recruit an undersized white qb named Tate
Posted by 3xKrazy, Wed Jan-16-19 09:26 AM
it's just not gonna work
2701853, just lost the starting QB race in Miami.
Posted by will_5198, Fri Aug-16-19 08:39 PM
QB1 was a long time ago now...
2701858, what's scary is that he'd be OSU's starting qb rn if meyer stuck around
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Aug-17-19 10:56 AM
also scary that OSU took out it's best qb of all time to put in Tate against mich. that prob cost us our 70 spot.
2701859, been too busy w/ his IG thot girlfriend
