David Aldridge

@davidaldridgedc
At the direction of his attorney, Raymond Brothers, @MarkelleF is scheduled to see a shoulder specialist early next week. Per Brothers, Fultz will not participate in team practices or games until after the the specialist has had a chance to evaluate him.

shit getting stranger and stranger.

I don't see Fultz ever fulfilling #1 potential

He needs to step away from the NBA for awhile

He's not going to get right playing through it.
2679544, Good idea. If he's not right, there's no use in playing him.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Nov-20-18 12:11 PM
If his shoulder is still impeding his progress, that's bad enough, but it's really going to fuck with his head more seeing social media (and the actual media) mocking his free throw attempts on the regular. So yeah, shut it down.

Hope he gets better-- the downside of playing Pac-12 basketball is that so few people got to see how brilliant he was in college before all the shoulder stuff.
2679546, RE: social media (and the actual media) mocking his free throw attempts on the regular.
Posted by bentagain, Tue Nov-20-18 12:22 PM
Let's stop pretending social media and the media are the problem

No guard will have an NBA career shooting 40% from the FT line

Those are DeAndre Drummond #s

Those are facts, not some unfair criticism

The FTs alone are enough to keep him on the bench.
2679571, He's had a very public history of shoulder injury.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Nov-20-18 03:12 PM
And it's clear it's had a *major* impact on his shooting motion. Not even just looking at the numbers from college to pros, but looking with your eyes, how he shot in college vs. how he shoots now.

>Those are facts, not some unfair criticism
>
>The FTs alone are enough to keep him on the bench.

Yeah, and why does he shoot that way? His injury. It's not hard to contextualize.
2679575, What does that have to do with social media/media?
Posted by bentagain, Tue Nov-20-18 03:45 PM
By your own reply, if he's being impacted by the attention...doesn't that make you believe it's a mental/personal issue?

He's made statements about being healthy

This is year 2 and he's no more closer to being an NBA player

You really think it takes 2 years to diagnose a 'serious' injury...?

IMO, he's done...and it doesn't have anything to do with physical issues...IMO.
2679576, ... have you ever come back from an injury before?
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Nov-20-18 03:58 PM
If you think there's nothing mental about coming back from injury and trusting your body again, I don't know what to tell you.

And if you don't think having to go through that in a very public way would exacerbate the issue, again, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm not saying the dude is physically incapable of taking the floor. I'm saying he's still not recovered from his injury. Maybe he never will. Maybe it has to do with the nature of the injury, maybe it has to do with trusting his body again, maybe a combination? I don't know, but you look at who he was before the injury and who he was after, and it's simple arithmetic to understand that the injury is why he's like this today.

So removing him from the limelight while he tries to figure out how to get past this injury-- if he even can-- is unmistakably a good idea. Because struggling in the public eye isn't going to do the mental aspect of injury recovery any favors whatsoever.
2679582, We understand alladat...and yes, I've been through rehab
Posted by bentagain, Tue Nov-20-18 04:30 PM
Following reconstructive knee surgery from a bball injury

About 9 months of physical therapy

...which didn't include playing bball...

and that's most of my issue with your replies

A 'serious' injury, from my experience and observation, is rehabbed off the court

AFAIK, he's never ceased bball activity

Fans and the media are simply commenting on what they're witnessing

The collective of which are concluding his issues as of today are mental

and I agree

I can't think of a 'serious' injury that went without diagnosis for 2 years

+, he's been physically cleared by physicians since 2017.

If it's a good idea to shut down a player who is still dealing with the after effects of serious injury?

The whole thing is just wildly depressing. I can't imagine what it's like being a young player with millions of dollars but no idea who to trust.

At least he went pro and got a big contract-- imagine if he'd suffered this injury while in college.
2679585, Yup, bad advice from all over is what I’m thinking too.

2679580, it seems like the simplest explanation is that
Posted by Rjcc, Tue Nov-20-18 04:23 PM
whatever was wrong physically has been resolved.

but he still has a problem.

but they can't play him if he can't just hold the ball and shoot.

I wish everything about the situation were different.

hopefully he can get it together..... it may be best that he move on...

I'm always wondering what exactly happened here... this young man was a gunner in college...saw him play plenty in the Pac 12... what exactly happened from then until him not being able to shoot.... it had to be some sort of injury.....had to be.... maybe a nerve issue...

what happened...and how did it happen...

there's a disconnect somewhere because it's not working... not sure if it's a Steve Sax or Mackey Sasser thing where they just mentally become incapable of doing something basic related to their job in their sport.... he doesn't seem strong enough to shoot the ball from distance now....

2679743, Dude seems like a head case. Maybe the pressure is too much?

I'm more interested in the cause than diagnosis at this point

You don't just wake up at 20Y.O. with a neurological disorder

Rumors are he was in a motorcycle accident after the draft

Something is still off about the whole thing.
2680940, that sounds bizarre

although I agree on the whole timeline of what happened from draft/summer league (he looked fine?) to suddenly training camp he can't shoot.

TOS is a pretty serious injury in baseball, but it's also almost exclusively a baseball injury, which both adds to the curiosity over what contributed to it in Fultz, whether it's actually what's going on with him, and what kind of timeline he's looking at. I'll leave the full article behind the link but add most of the salient details below:

----------

"The “thoracic outlet” of “thoracic outlet syndrome” is the gap between the collarbone and the first rib. A lot of important stuff has to fit through that hole, specifically nerves and major blood vessels, and repetitive motion (such as throwing a baseball) can cause that gap to shrink. When that happens, the collarbone and the top rib compress all the nerves and blood vessels between them like a clamp, which can cause numbness and/or muscle weakness in the hand.

"When the TOS is neurogenic, it meansthe issue is with a compressed nerve, while vascular TOS entails a compressed blood vessel. The most famous TOS case in baseball history came in 1980, when Astros ace J.R. Richard suffered a stroke brought on by the blood vessel constriction of vascular TOS. Richard, then 30 years old and coming off back-to-back 300-strikeout seasons, nearly died and never pitched in the major leagues again.

Sometimes pitchers, even All-Stars like Chris Carpenter, Josh Beckett, and Matt Harrison, never come back from TOS at all. Others, like Harvey, get a rib taken out and come back eight months or a year later with their velocity, movement, command, or all three greatly reduced. In addition to Harvey, Jaime Garcia, Phil Hughes, and Tyson Ross all came back weakened by TOS.

The only unqualified success story that comes to mind is Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz, who had a rib removed to alleviate TOS in September 2015. He returned to the rotation the following May, and two years later pitched 183 innings with a 2.85 ERA, made his first All-Star team, and earned a couple of down-ballot Cy Young votes. It’s worth noting that while many of these pitchers were at or near the end of their careers anyway when they were diagnosed with TOS, Foltynewicz had his surgery when he was 23, and his recovery might bode well for the 20-year-old Fultz, if it comes to that."

She would go to work and be in searing pain and numbness all day, she still has the issues and cant sit in an office chair for a long time.

I think this was due to a car accident she was in some years back.

It's treatable, but will never just "go away"
