I'm an O's fan. We literally have ZERO chance in this division due to the Chris Davis contract and not being able to lose money on misses. Yanks and Sox have money to make bad contracts "go away."

Imagine watching your inept GM trade a clear multiple time All Star in Adam Jones to Baltimore for Erik Bedard, a sort of okay pitcher.
Bedard could never find his game or his health and Jones did indeed turn into a multi-time all star and one best young players in baseball.
Few fanbases can bang w/ the M's when it comes to misery.

2679568, Kurt Suzuki, Nats 2/10mm Posted by Walleye, Tue Nov-20-18 02:41 PM
You know, he could hit a little bit early in his career - at least for a catcher - so maybe he's not the best basis for any conclusions, but am I crazy for thinking there's been a number of catchers lately who became pretty good hitters, for the first time in their career, after the age of 30?
Suzuki from age 23-29: .253/.309/.375 (86 OPS+) Suzuki from age 30-present: .267/.324/.405 (98 OPS+)
Discipline stays the same. Just a bit more average and some more power on top of that. And there's nothing extraordinary about that pattern, somebody becoming a better hitter as they get older until it stops when they get OLD. But that second part is a real issue for post-30 catchers. Yadier Molina warmed up to being a pretty good hitter too, though his trend started in a bit more traditional late-20s sweet spot.
Anyhow, this isn't an interesting observation really. It's just that if you told me a decade ago that a pretty good, smart team would be throwing a multi-year, eight-figure contract at a 35 year old Kurt Suzuki, I wouldn't have guessed it'd be to get his bat in the lineup.
I have no other opinions on this. It's probably a bad idea, unless it's not. Maybe Spencer Kieboom could just be good instead? I think that, given his name, that would be the best possible outcome for everybody. The homerun call is built in. He just has to... hit... homeruns.

2010 - Wilson Ramos (Minnesota) traded to Washington as their catcher of the future
2011 - Derek Norris (Washington), former catcher of future, traded to Oakland
2012 - Kurt Suzuki (Oakland) traded to Washington, so Norris can start
2013 - Kurt Suzuki traded back to Oakland, so Ramos can start
2014 - Suzuki signs with Minnesota, who drafted Ramos; Norris makes All-Star team in final season with A's
2016 - Norris traded to Washington, and is then cut after Matt Wieters is signed; Ramos makes All-Star team in final season with Nats
2017 - Ramos and Norris sign with Tampa Bay
2018 - Suzuki signs with Washington

if, though, this clears salary for Machado and we can move for a dependable catcher, it'll be OK.
This being the Mets, I have no faith of that.

He almost makes Stras look durable. Rizzo always pushing buttons though.
I like it, assuming Keuchel doesn't sign for like 4/80 and Eovaldi 4/70 or something in that range.
They need another arm, but I think on paper they're about as good as last year if everybody's healthy and on paper they were a 90 win team last year.

2681028, 345/10 with some options and pie in the sky incentives? Posted by Call It Anything, Wed Dec-05-18 03:19 PM
I think the most important thing to Boras is that Harper can claim to be the highest paid player in the game for a moment in time. Highest AAV contract at the moment is Greinke making $34.4 a year over 6 years. So I think that's the tipping point for negotiations.

Kemp had a great first half, but I don’t think there’s a whole lot left. Smart trade IMO.
I really liked rooting for Kemp and Puig though.
Hoping Puig gets 600 at bats and has a true monster breakout season. He was very productive the last two years.

The Padres will never be in contention, and no one else will sign there because they emptied the vault for him. They better have a ton of prospects ready to bring up for the next 10 years.

2688304, Get to collect your money and live in sunny southern California Posted by Marauder21, Tue Feb-19-19 01:46 PM

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal. How long before the Padres try and trade him to get out from under this deal?
|
2688312, Who would take on that contract? Posted by hip bopper, Tue Feb-19-19 02:19 PM
Everyone else in the majors had the opportunity to sign him to that offer. You would have to gut your team to get him.

2688317, They dip their toe into competing every few years Posted by Call It Anything, Tue Feb-19-19 02:29 PM
Whether it's overbidding for Eric Hosmer last year, trading for Kimbrel and Justin Upton a few years ago, signing Josh Johnson and Joaquin Benoit a few years before that, the Padres always seem to want to be in the mix. The main problem is their player development has been awful.
Can you guess the last two All-Stars the Padres drafted or were the first team to sign in amateur free agency? Jake Peavy and Tony Gwynn. Seriously. You can go back 30 years and all you'll pick up is Andy Benes and Benito Santiago. Chase Headley was an overlooked stud in that window, but that's still pretty terrible.
Now they got what seems to be a franchise cornerstone at SS with Tatis, Jr. and the best left-handed pitching prospect in baseball with Gore, a few others. Arguably top system in baseball. On paper they're probably a contender as early as next year.
...But if it all goes south and never comes together, they'll dump him after 2022 before the opt-out.

|
2689284, well F him then Posted by Tiger Woods, Thu Feb-28-19 03:10 PM
the Nats offered him 10 years for 300, and after all that he settled on Philly for 13 years for 330. After all that I guarantee he regrets turning down the Nats deal, or not at least negotiating with them more. The Nats would've done 330 for 13.
I'm blown.

2689294, 1/3 of that was deferred, but yeah Posted by Call It Anything, Thu Feb-28-19 03:27 PM
Nats 300/10 was more like 244/10 estimated by present day value. So 330/13 v 244/10 and it's a more reasonable difference.
It's looking like Boras overplayed this whole thing. Saved some face with "biggest position player total amount" by beating Stanton's deal by $5 miilion. But from an AAV, he fucked up.
|
2689295, yea, but that was the first offer. Would Nats have done 320x12? Probably Posted by Tiger Woods, Thu Feb-28-19 03:32 PM
their egos got in the way. Harper and Boras were hellbent on getting the biggest deal ever and thought for sure the Cubs, Dodgers, or Yankees would come calling. And they didn't. And worse yet no one else really did either.
So you're the biggest contract ever for what, a year until Trout hits the market? Ok dude. They played themselves

No opt outs? Less per year than Manny? A no trade clause? (not like they're going to trade him before he gets his five and 10 rights, but still) He must REALLY be cool with spending his entire career in Philly.
|
2689302, According to Boras that was his priority and what made this take so long Posted by Nodima, Thu Feb-28-19 03:51 PM
Nora’s directly said it’s hard to a tram to sign up for age 37, 38, 39 years and Philly was willing to go there. Also said it was Harper’s primary mandate that he spend the rest of his career somewhere
