2669512, so who's actually still watchin NFL this fall?

I cannot bring myself to give a shit.

2669522, I mostly fell off of it when the 2000s Titans disbanded
Posted by Nodima, Mon Jul-30-18 09:23 AM
I tried to get back in here and there, whether just generally or through work fantasy pools, but I just never fully got there. Same thing happened to me with baseball; after Griffey, A-Rod, Edgar, Buhner, Randy, Moyer, Wilson and the rest got traded or fell off I almost immediately stopped caring about baseball and became one of those "god Sportscenter sucks in the summer" people. Before 2001, I LIVED for baseball highlights and the boxscore section of the newspaper.

I've got back into baseball via the video game and the wonkiness of advanced stats in the past three years finally, but the combination of increasingly frequent player churn, labor strife for my favorite position (RB) and everything to do with CTE and the politics of seemingly every single owner in the league...I might stumble across a game and get stuck there once or twice a month, but I haven't intentionally watched football other than the Super Bowl and Husker games since Steve McNair was killed to be honest.

I might tune in for a few important games, but this is the least excited for a new season I've been coming off a Vikings playoff run ever. It feels similar to when I was just done with wrestling a while ago and nothing was going to get me to care about it.

I'm sure I'll probably watch a little more when I'm sitting at home bored on a Sunday afternoon, but it all just seems so shitty.
2669524, just Packer games

I watch less each year. They're losing me with 4+ hour games, plus the fact that I can only dedicate so much of my time to football viewing, and I would much rather attend a Fresno State game or go to the local JC game.

Posted by mista k5, Tue Jul-31-18 10:09 AM
ive been wanting to embrace the new players and have been thinking of getting a jersey. im sure ill find something better to do with my money.

the fam is organizing a trip and part of it would be to see the cowboys in a preseason game. this would be the first time i pay to see an nfl game. i will probably go through with it.

as a cowboys fan i have always only watched their games. nfl is honestly pretty boring if youre not rooting for a specific team. the playoffs are different but regular season games are usually pretty boring. jerry is pushing me very close to giving up on the cowboys which would mean on the nfl.

its been talked about on here before but if both sides are protesting the nfl then whats the impact? how is it distinguishable between people protesting because they support the players vs people protesting because the nfl wont punish the players for kneeling?

to be clear, i think players should be allowed to protest. kap not being in the league is messed up. the argument that players should protest in a more convenient matter is so stupid.

i would like to see the players protest by refusing to play until....what are the concrete results we are looking for? maybe refuse to play if the nfl doesnt allow players to protest during the anthem? i do feel there is a lack of a plan, raise awareness, great. next step?
2669784, i agree about effectiveness
Posted by rob, Thu Aug-02-18 12:14 AM
precisely because of the signal issue you mentioned

it's obvious most nfl owners are inclined to read drops in ratings/sales as further proof that they need to work harder for their "base"

changing the nfl is going to have to come from somewhere else.

but i think most of us aren't in boycott mode...we're just done with the bullshit.
2669580, That's where I'm at...

I'm finally giving up Fantasy Football, which is the first step in me abandoning the NFL. We'll see how much effort I put into catching the games this year when I don't have to keep up with random players I normally wouldn't care at all about.

You are right, once this part is done my actual interest would really be cut. I can like the Steelers from afar - once I quit fantasy baseball it was real easy to stop watching real baseball.

In my big money league I won the league for the 2nd straight year. So I was like, welp, either go out on top or go for the 3peat. My season was basically over before it started when 3 of my starters went down Week 1. So needless to say, I did not 3peat and now I am content to walk away.

On every level of fandom and viewership, the NFL's been a remarkably easy league to fall out of love with. At this point it's sunk even lower in terms of personal interest than the NHL post '05, which I really didn't think was possible.

Shit is gross. The end.

i did miss my FFL league the first year (i was commissioner of a league of HS/college buddies for 10+ yrs) but i got over it.

i will watch the super bowl. but that about it © hov, i'm pretty much strictly NBA and EPL these days.

Not hard to believe when you think about it, but like the circus, so many distractions you forget what the hell is going on. That's why commentators make money....make you forget shit ain't going on in between whistles.

What a drain of life productivity though.

on Sunday it'll probably be on in the background but NFL football is not a major event that I plan my entire sundays around like it used to be.

Obviously I'm not going to any games or buying any merch, I don't pay for cable so I feel like they're not getting anything financially from me. I don't even do fantasy any more.

I'll probably watch a few playoff games and go to a super bowl party for the food.

I definitely will be watching. I really enjoy football. A lot!

And I don't have any real reason NOT to watch. And since everyone seems convinced professional football is coming to an end, I need to watch as much as possible lol.

It's actually interesting to see liberals and conservatives all come together in agreement around something so besides the point.

Watching Americans separately band together to kill this insanely complicated, horrifically violent and more-than-occasionally beautiful game that only they like and understand, it will be both fitting and hilarious.

I'ma still miss it though.

Posted by COOLEHMAGAZINE, Tue Jul-31-18 01:57 AM
I was being facetious. It is amusing to me that if the NFL were to tank both Trump and Colin Kaepernick could take a joint victory lap.

I got not problem with people not watching anymore. Certainly people in this thread have given many valid reasons they are not interested or have disengaged.

But as much as I enjoy the NBA and how much more palatable than announcers, the league and player relations, and media coverage are than the NFL…there is some much energy of all kinds packed into those few months of football season, I really, really enjoy it. The sheer, unpredictability of football, the amount of weight on every game, the strategic chess match with it's innumerable options and moveable pieces. I cannot get that anywhere else and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

2669822, man, you expressed this better than I could...
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Aug-02-18 10:14 AM
I simply ENJOY watching football. The only sport I like watching more than the NFL is the NBA. Those are the only two sports where it doesn't matter who is playing or what point of the season it is.

Absolute garbage football for longer and longer periods during the season. Offensive lines around the league that aren't serviceable. Pedestrian talent at skill positions. Defenses that aren't allowed to, you know, play defense. Non contact injuries galore. The practice restrictions in the last CBA combined with the state of college game really put the overall competition levels at a loss.

Plus, whatever happens in the ratings isn't hurting the league at all. They're pretty well insulated with the current TV deals (the carriers are who it hurts - look at ESPN) and whatever stadium deal they have in place, since most owners effectively own the municipality constructed facilities as well. In some years when the TV contracts expire and even further down the road when it comes time to replace some of these stadiums, we may start seeing change - but the Shield is financially good for the foreseeable future.

Understandable for a rookie

Three day old news, apparently, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere here in my quick skim.

How many competent black ex-NFL players are relegated to studio commentary...

While Aikman, Romo and now Witten just walk into the game day booth on day 1.
2671256, never forget they brought in rush fucking limbaugh.

2671428, I think Baker Mayfield is legit
Posted by bentagain, Fri Aug-24-18 04:00 PM
He didn't look great last night vs the Iggles

but he was thrown into action against our 1st team D

He made a zone read 2nd level throw to the far sideline after buying time in the pocket

in comparison to my Lamar Jackson impression above...he's way ahead

He might be good enough to get Hue fired for the way he's being handled
2671440, Yeah. That throw was nice.. but he had some rookie mistakes too
