2667621, World Cup 2018 (Semis)
Posted by benny, Mon Jul-09-18 10:56 AM
France-Belgium Jul 10 2pmET
Croatia-England Jul 11 2pmET
2667626, whoever wins tomorrow will win it all
Posted by KiloMcG, Mon Jul-09-18 11:32 AM
i don't think the other side is strong enough to beat either France or Belgium. my rooting order right now is Belgium, France, England then Croatia.

i don't really care, though, just give me great matches.
2667627, no clue what'll happen w/ the 1st semi, complete toss-up IMO.
Posted by dillinjah, Mon Jul-09-18 11:50 AM
with the 2nd, if Croatia were healthy and rested, they'd be the definite favorite. But they're obviously not so...
2667631, People need to explain this "Croatia is the favorite" thing
Posted by bshelly, Mon Jul-09-18 11:57 AM
yeah, they've got 3-4 guys on big clubs. England's got a higher ELO rating and is in better form this tournament. All Croatia's done is smoke a trash Argentina team. if both teams were on equal rest i'd say it's a tossup, but the exhaustion factor makes me lean england pretty hard.
2667635, No one was a bigger Hrvatska fan coming in than me
Posted by khn, Mon Jul-09-18 12:09 PM
But I agree - they are a squad that has gotten here on the wings of weak competition, a hot goalie, a top 5 player in peak form and Mandzukic running really hard. I still think they're more talented but some combo of Rakitic, Krameric, Kovacic and/or Brozovic need to show the fuck up already, otherwise England is definitely sending them home Wednesday.
2667639, it's a cyse. england's the better side.
Posted by dula dibiasi, Mon Jul-09-18 12:14 PM
2668079, interesting. lol.
Posted by nighttripper, Wed Jul-11-18 05:28 PM
2667640, They're quite fashionable on this board.
Posted by Buck, Mon Jul-09-18 12:15 PM
Trendy. All the rage, in fact.
2667649, lolz
Posted by dula dibiasi, Mon Jul-09-18 12:45 PM
the other night @ a housewarming, i was telling this girl how belgium / croatia was the hipster finals pick.

she made fun of me for still using the word "hipster" in 2018 but the point still stands.
2667652, I haven't gotten the sense people see this Croatia as a clear fave
Posted by benny, Mon Jul-09-18 12:55 PM
more like, it was one of the dark horses before the competition, and on paper it's got a lot of favorable factors, but I can't say I haven't seen a lot of people say they were anywhere near favored over England, with most people pointing to the 2 consecutive ET
2667653, superior midfield.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jul-09-18 01:04 PM
2667660, ^^yup
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Jul-09-18 01:45 PM
2667659, Croatia can def exploit England in midfield
Posted by dillinjah, Mon Jul-09-18 01:25 PM
Rakitic needs to step it up for Croatia to win...dude is capable of it as we all know.

I'm honestly surprised England has been able to hide their weakness in the middle of the pitch (respect to Southgate for that).

If Croatia can't do it, Belgium or France will
2667661, my man Hendo!
Posted by smutsboy, Mon Jul-09-18 01:45 PM
He puts in work.
2667664, They have a few great midfielders, but they are overachieving too
Posted by B9, Mon Jul-09-18 02:04 PM
Modric is a "top 10 player doing it" talent, Rakitic and Perisic are great when they're on their games and Kovacic is the hype/hope that just hasn't materialized yet. After that? Mandzucik couldn't beat a training cone in the open field and their best defender is Liverpool's worst. Things get even thinner from there. It's a myth that "if Croatia were fresh" they would be better than England; England may only have one or two great players compared to Croatia's 3.5, but they have extensive depth and cohesion.
2667704, England bookies' favorite btw (correctly, after back2back Croatia PKs)
Posted by theeraser, Mon Jul-09-18 09:59 PM
2667709, Because english fans are annoying as fuck. Fuck the Queen, etc.
Posted by Castro, Tue Jul-10-18 02:30 AM
And I am here for that. I know that England is a bit browner/blacker than before but that song, YO. If England wins, we gotta hear that song forever. That is like the Cheers theme and Boston.
2667717, man...fuck that song. Well said.
Posted by dillinjah, Tue Jul-10-18 08:31 AM
>And I am here for that. I know that England is a bit
>browner/blacker than before but that song, YO. If England

2667719, True, Croatian Twitter isn't currently annoying right now
Posted by Marauder21, Tue Jul-10-18 08:47 AM
2667720, I love that song. Don't @ me.
Posted by bshelly, Tue Jul-10-18 09:01 AM
2667729, Rooting for Croatia but they might have run out of gas
Posted by j., Tue Jul-10-18 10:14 AM
back to back penalty shootouts? not questioning the mental toughness of Balkan cats but they may be physically on fumes at this point

And fuck that song
2667736, Which song?
Posted by B9, Tue Jul-10-18 10:42 AM
Because "It's Coming Home" is 10000x worse than God Save the Queen.
2667756, true, tho 'God save the Queen' is worse due to history.
Posted by dillinjah, Tue Jul-10-18 11:25 AM
>Because "It's Coming Home" is 10000x worse than God Save the
>Queen.
2667797, Clearly, its coming home is 'that song'. UGH.

2667718, Its coming home
Posted by Amritsar, Tue Jul-10-18 08:45 AM
according to my day drunk english co-workers ...whatever that's supposed to mean

I guess England invented soccer?
2667725, can this morning go any faster pls?
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 09:42 AM
2667774, I don't understand this Belgium lineup. Wow
Posted by B9, Tue Jul-10-18 12:17 PM
The changes against Brazil were mostly masterful, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but what in the hell is this? Back 4 with Chadli as a right back and a roadblock of 3 6s? 3-4-3 with Chadli and Dembele as the wingbacks? I want to understand.
2667776, super ballsy, could pay off handsomely or crash n burn
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 12:18 PM
2667777, If a back 4, why Chadli over Jordan Lukaku?
Posted by B9, Tue Jul-10-18 12:21 PM
mini-Lukaku is the only Belgium player that has the pace to stay somewhat with Mbappe and is the only natural leftback on the team. What a crazy gamble.
2667786, I guess he wants to push up his midfield, force Mbappe to defend?
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 12:36 PM
2667789, this assumes Mbappe is allowed to move sides periodically
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 12:40 PM
honestly I have no idea what to expect from this game, way too many considerations and my brain is broken from the nervousness
2667800, The French back line is, so far, unconvincing.
Posted by Buck, Tue Jul-10-18 01:22 PM
2667891, FOH. Varane buried Lukaku and will be this year's Ballon d'Or.
Posted by nighttripper, Tue Jul-10-18 06:58 PM
2667897, If you check the time stamp, you'll see I posted in the 22nd minute.
Posted by Buck, Tue Jul-10-18 07:10 PM
I also used the phrase "so far." Now, at the time I posted, Belgium had repeatedly created chances around goal with the help of some sketchy French defending, including clumsy headers and Umtiti's absolute whiff on a low cross.

However, Belgium did not manage to score, the French defense settled down, and the game turned.

Therefore my post stands.
2667801, Lloris with a massive save
Posted by smutsboy, Tue Jul-10-18 01:23 PM
2667805, hazard playing like he wants RM to buy him
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Jul-10-18 01:33 PM
2667807, Ima need Griezmann to involve his teammates in the attack.
Posted by Buck, Tue Jul-10-18 01:40 PM
2667810, Kobe system
Posted by bshelly, Tue Jul-10-18 01:48 PM
2667809, I hope the 2nd half opens up
Posted by smutsboy, Tue Jul-10-18 01:46 PM
2667811, eh. i'm thoroughly entertained.
Posted by bshelly, Tue Jul-10-18 01:49 PM
this is tense and tight. i love it.
2667815, entertaining if it leads to something eventually
Posted by smutsboy, Tue Jul-10-18 01:53 PM
if it's just 90 or 120 minutes of tenseness.... I dunno.
2667812, Hazard is killing us
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 01:50 PM
Pavard waiting for him to be at full blast to defend is not helping either
2667813, man on a mission
Posted by bshelly, Tue Jul-10-18 01:52 PM
that mission? get out of London and to Madrid.
2667817, But largely in isolation. Him not going down under the fouls is saving you
Posted by B9, Tue Jul-10-18 01:55 PM
Hes had a few chances to take an easy foul in the left channel either on Pavard or Pogba and just stayed up to prove whatever point it is he's going for. I'm sure Martinez will tell him to go ahead take the kick when he can.
2667814, Tactical first half, but I want Mertens for Dembele & Feker for Blaise
Posted by B9, Tue Jul-10-18 01:53 PM
Lets crack this open.
2667820, Umtitti. Game on

2667914, he leaves me speechless at least once a match
Posted by Castro, Tue Jul-10-18 10:52 PM
2667824, I think it's better for Belgium when KdB is the focal point
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Jul-10-18 02:22 PM
and not Hazard. Everyone is looking for Eden to this point. And while he's obviously dangerous, KdB is a bigger danger imo.
2667827, Pogba/Kante tho
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Jul-10-18 02:30 PM
2667828, This isnt' quite the match I expected.
Posted by Buck, Tue Jul-10-18 02:31 PM
Thought there'd be goals, for one.
2667830, Man Hazard is balling his ass off
Posted by bshelly, Tue Jul-10-18 02:40 PM
2667838, I am very disappointed with Belgium.
Posted by Buck, Tue Jul-10-18 02:54 PM
2667841, Me too
Posted by khn, Tue Jul-10-18 03:02 PM
They are nowhere near, or at least shouldn't be, as one-dimensional as they played.

All the props to France's defending though. They froze Lukaku out of the game and generally did a good job with Hazard.
2667844, yeah Lukaku was damn near invisible the whole match.
Posted by KiloMcG, Tue Jul-10-18 03:10 PM
2667840, still salty at that Giroud for NZonzi sub lol
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 03:01 PM
but DD gonna DD. Martinez was kinda feelin himself with that starting XI, but aside from Hazard who was monstrous, I though we did well past the first 30mins
2667845, Giroud had a knock on his calf I believe
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Jul-10-18 03:14 PM
2667842, I want to be disappointed in Belgium
Posted by smutsboy, Tue Jul-10-18 03:07 PM
but like folks are saying, straight credit to Pogba and Kante Tha God. They locked the entire stadium down.

2667843, you ain't lyin
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 03:10 PM
some good undeground work from Griezmann too
2667847, Deserved result for Les Bleus
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Jul-10-18 03:17 PM
Belgium had some great chances early but as we've seen in the knock-out stages, they haven't converted high % chances very well. Otherwise, they were very inconsistent and relied heavily on individual magic from Hazard and KDB to create half chances.

France were the more consistent team...bolstered by a MotM performance in Lloris and Pogba (incredible discipline and effort tonight). If not for some great last ditch defending by Belgium, this game is out of sight.
2667853, Lloris MOTM
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 03:24 PM
really a lot of good to pick out from les bleus who frustrated the Belgians immensely while still being on the verge of a breakdown countless times.

Varane is having some WC. Umtiti made me nervous but that header, wowza

Kante/Pogba, what more can be said. Matuidi played like a lion. As usual his technical limitations can be tedious, but he more than makes up for it in his forward movement

Giroud went back to his mineworker gameplan and was our best defender at times. Idgaf about our centre forward still lacking a goal, worked well enough in 98

Mbappe can be annoying but he is key to making things happen. And he is getting good at provoking the opponent, even with that Argentinian-type yellow card in injury time

OOOh boy this feels good. Part of me now wants to see England in the final to make it "more" classic, but I certainly won't be sad if our Croatian brethren pull it off tomorrow.
2667896, possibly of the world cup
Posted by nighttripper, Tue Jul-10-18 07:08 PM
I am not gonna pretend like I wasn't hating during the qualifiers and the preparation (it's mostly cause I was rooting for TTBOI)

shame on me to have doubted the god, he's having an incredible tournament.
2667861, So Thibault Courtois is taking it well
Posted by benny, Tue Jul-10-18 03:56 PM
"I wouldn't say that the other team was better than us. They defended in their own half the entire time, we shouldn't have been surprised, they've done that all tournament. It's a shame." (BeIN)

that he didn't believe Karius had a concussion (26/30 tests came back positive) because the symptoms weren't exactly the same as his own and that medical staffs will take out if you do have one (LOL)
2667888, sounds like Hazard put too much salt on his fries too

2667864, That 76th (?) minute noncall for the Giroud foul on Hazard
Posted by B9, Tue Jul-10-18 04:06 PM
That was crazy to not call that, but Belgium's only idea of slinging balls into the box was just poor.
2667866, Yeah, that was a terrible non-call
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Jul-10-18 04:09 PM
2667952, terrible. i don't know wtf he was watching. it happened right in front of him.

2668058, my favorite silly stat for the WC
Posted by benny, Wed Jul-11-18 03:51 PM
since 1982 every final has featured at least a player from Bayern and Inter. For this year Tolisso/Perisic+Brozovic. Kind of amazing it happened when you look at the odds
2668065, so strange, esp considering how far inter have fallen recently
Posted by dillinjah, Wed Jul-11-18 04:03 PM
2668069, It is 46 players. But yeah Bayern is not so surprising
Posted by calminvasion, Wed Jul-11-18 04:22 PM
It's true for each, not "or" right?

Also not counting this year I think only 2 final hadn't involved either Germany or Italy
2668072, yeah it's 1 min each
Posted by benny, Wed Jul-11-18 04:27 PM
somehow this year Bayern looked the most unlikely outcome once Germany crapped the bed. I remember hearing about the stat before the 1/4 finals and thinking it was possible but definitely not likely to happen
2668071, The semis were fun as a neutral observer nm
