i've seen Pop do it before too.
2643278, its been a proven fact for a while that they basically coach themselves...

anyway
2643309, Yeah

Not like he introduced the small ball concept to this team or anything

2643388, Not sure you know what a fact is

Posted by mrhood75, Tue Feb-13-18 11:16 AM
Matter of fact, I hope all of the 3 Wise Men (West, Iggy, and Livingston) become coaches for the team after they retire.

But yeah, coaches often do this shit. Don Nelson basically let Avery Johnson run practices in Dallas during his last year with the team. Nothing to get up in arms about.

And if the Suns didn't like it, they could have tried to beat them.
2643297, I don't get the controversy
Posted by pretentious username, Tue Feb-13-18 11:28 AM
a) he's trying to motivate his guys to start the games off hot

b) it worked

c) he's a coach who has missed time before due to health issues, which could happen again

d) I laugh every time they talk about Red Auerbach lighting up a cigar before the game was over. At best this is a MUCH milder version of that, but I really don't even see this as disrespectful
2643300, Oh they won? Nothing to see here then
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Tue Feb-13-18 11:34 AM
Coaching isn't just about drawing plays
2643301, They played the Suns.../shrug

hard to think of something more insulting to the opponent

we're up so much...I'm going on break

FOH
2643350, pretty sure it was from the beginning of the game.

2643354, ...oh...well...in that case...get all the way the FOH!
Posted by bentagain, Tue Feb-13-18 03:20 PM
That makes it even more insulting

PHX is so beneath us...I can handoff HC duties to players and still win

Bet they don't do that $hit vs elite teams.
2643356, if i was phx, i would appreciate all the help i could get.
Posted by Cenario, Tue Feb-13-18 03:25 PM
*shrug*
2643361, You're a NYK fan? You are PHX
Posted by bentagain, Tue Feb-13-18 03:40 PM
Hope they put up 200 and win by 100 with a kid picked out of the stands coaching next time they play NY.
2643365, good. embarrass us into doing better.
Posted by Cenario, Tue Feb-13-18 03:59 PM
the hell i look crying bc he let the players coach.
2643363, If only the opponent had control over the outcome of a game.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-13-18 03:45 PM
Oh wait. They do. They can play better.

Jared Dudley said something to that effect. If they're upset by disrespect, they need to earn respect by playing well.
2643364, Midway through the first quarter = disrespectful
Posted by bentagain, Tue Feb-13-18 03:48 PM
Like I said...bet they don't do this $hit vs elite teams

You think PHX needs to be reminded they're terrible?

Maybe they can play 4 on 5 next time
2643367, he wasn't doing it as a message to Phoenix
Posted by pretentious username, Tue Feb-13-18 03:59 PM
and Phoenix could also just, ya know, not be terrible. no one is forcing them to be terrible.

>Like I said...bet they don't do this $hit vs elite teams
>

yeah, cause that would be stupid. it worked here though. what's your point?
2643369, You keep acting like this is Golden State's fault
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-13-18 04:03 PM
>Like I said...bet they don't do this $hit vs elite teams

No, they don't. Kerr is trying to find a way to keep his players engaged against inferior competition, and it's smart. And if Phoenix had played better and made the game interesting, maybe Kerr would've regretted it. But they didn't.

>You think PHX needs to be reminded they're terrible?

If they can't beat a team whose coach is letting the players draw up plays, then maybe they do need that reminder. They lost earlier this month to Charlotte at home, got beat by the Lakers by 20. Spurs beat them in Phoenix by 48. They'd won 2 of their last 15 heading into last night's game.

Why did they deserve Golden State's "respect"? Elfrid Payton was the only one out there fighting last night, and he's brand new to the team. Everyone else willingly rolled over.

And frankly, if Phoenix was *really* mad about it, they could've gone Gilooly on someone on the Warriors. Hard foul their asses. Show a little fight, show them you won't go away.

But they clearly weren't that mad about it. No fight was found last night. So I don't know why people who weren't even watching the game are getting mad about this.

2643385, the phoenix suns product is disrespectful to their fans.

and never bat an eyelash about it. Dudes are soft AF. Baby boomers and Gen-Xers just as bad as millennials, too.
2643384, He's never really been an X/O guy. He's a cohesion guy. So it's perfect.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Tue Feb-13-18 04:58 PM

He has 2 of the top 4, 3 of the top 8, and 4 of the top 10
players in the league.

The only challenge with this team is keeping people together
and friendly. Kerr is one of the nicest guys in the league.
2643386, Do people really think the Warriors don't run sets?
Posted by Premiere, Tue Feb-13-18 05:04 PM
They're one of the best coached teams in the league, bar none. But yeah, his guys are mostly very, very smart and have been there for a while, so they know each other's tendencies and can manage.

Just because someone else could be doing Kerr's job doesn't mean he's not great at it. All this "not an X's and O's guy," "they can always coach themselves" shit is ridiculous. They are the best players in the L running some of the best offense with some of the smartest players in the league as role players, so they can do shit like this. There's a reason they're the gold standard.
2643387, you realize you just contradicted yourself right?
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Feb-13-18 05:14 PM

2643486, "(R)unning some of the best offense"
Posted by Premiere, Wed Feb-14-18 02:47 AM
I mentioned it. What I'm saying is everyone in this thread's acting like teams can only have smart players or be system, coach-driven teams; the Warriors have both. That's why they're really fucking good at offense, historically so. On defense, the guys have been good since the Mark Jackson era, and adding Durant didn't hurt. They're good in every way; to credit the intelligence of their players doesn't require not acknowledging how well designed and well executed the offensive sets they run are.

I think the question of "Could players coach themselves?" is a lot more interesting than taking this moment to say, "This proves Kerr's a chemistry-building, caretaker coach."
2643483, Kerr is not an Xs and Os guy. He's a "chemistry' guy. And that's fine.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Feb-14-18 01:22 AM
We say that about black coaches all the time. A white
one can wear it, and we don't need to coddle him.

I mean, Feel Jackson was DEFINITELY not an Xs and Os guy.
His gift was managing Michael and friends. That's not easy.

Kerr is more in that realm.

Let's just admit it.

mannnn, putting air bud in the game wouldnt be disrespectful
2643490, Is this good coaching or proof he isn’t needed?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Feb-14-18 08:44 AM
cause I honestly feel like they would have won without him last year.

Some folks say it’s proof he is a great coach but I feel like these players are so good they could do it with anyone else on the sidelines or no one at all.
2643495, they were better w/ luke

mike brown damn near went 16-0 in the playoffs
2643496, Coaches prove their worth when they aren't the favorites
Posted by Cenario, Wed Feb-14-18 09:13 AM
Its hard to prove how great a coach is when they've got the best talent.

Kerr's greatest season was his 15 game improvement and ring in his 1st season after Mark Jackson (with basically the same core). Him winning with this squad now proves nothing about his coaching abilities.
2643513, He's a chemistry guy. He's likeable, keeps guys together.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Feb-14-18 10:06 AM

It's not irrelevant.

kerr literally couldn't fucking care less.

not an ego-driven, glory seeking type at all. constantly deferring and giving credit to his predecessors, mentors, assistants, players et al.
