STUDIO CITY, Calif. - Former Washington Wizards player Rasual Butler and his wife were killed in a car crash in Southern California on Wednesday, according to TMZ.

TMZ said the single-car crash happened in the early morning hours in Studio City, California, near the Los Angeles area.

The 38-year-old Philadelphia native was drafted by the Miami Heat in 2002 and played for the Wizards between 2014 and 2015. His last season in the NBA was in 2016.

TMZ reports Butler lost control of his Range Rover at about 2 a.m., struck a parking meter and slammed into a wall. Speed was believed to be a factor in the crash, according to TMZ.

His wife, Leah Labelle, was an R&B singer who placed 12th on the third season of "American Idol" back in 2003, TMZ reported.

always a target in free agency whenever he became available for years, just had a touch with his stroke.

he kept it the hottest for me during his stint with the Hornets; that was back in my college days when I could really put in the work on NBA 2K and dust people online with the bad teams. Kings, Grizzlies and Hornets were my go-tos; loved Butler from deep with Bonzi Wells and Chris Paul leading the squad.

RIP and best wishes to his survivors.

I always dug his game no matter what team he was on. Certainly partial as a Hornet/Pels fan. Very sad.

i grew up reading about his dominance in the Daily News at Roman Catholic back in the late 90s (we're the same age.) really sad to read this.

2nd Roman Catholic legend (Eddie Griffin) to pass in a tragic car accident. fucking awful.
2640976, Beloved by his fellow players, I see. Sincere outpouring. R.I.P.

from Seattle, and a graduate of my high school, so some people I went to school with are friends with her.

i remember when she was coming up in music and then did American Idol. had to pull for her for the alma mater ties.

i always liked Rasual too. he always seemed to end up that glue guy on any team he was on, and he seemed to endear himself to whatever team he was on. i always liked to wish him well because he seemed like one of those players who was always outplaying their actual talent. he had some pretty good years off the bench of various teams.

sucks to see young, bright flames go out.

RIP.
