It wasn't billed as "The Pierce and IT night" it was the Pierce night for months and then the Celtics tried to shoehorn IT into it to appease everyone. As a Celts legend he absolutely has a right to say no to that. You wanna argue how he goes about it? Fine, but this whole "it's not actually his night" thing is weird. I'd call it hair-splitting, but there's not even a hair there to split. Every jersey retirement is considered that player's "night" and nothing you've said has proven otherwise.
