This isn't a "celebrity," it's the middle Ball kid and two other players.
China is probably the #1 economic power in the world right now. And they don't particularly care about the optics of the situation. Especially about three kids from a country who's President has made it a habit about talking spicy about that country for the better part of two years.

This part is likely true. But the Ball family and UCLA don't have any negotiating power here.

This isn't N. Korea, but it's a fairly totalitarian regime when it wants to be. And it's not exactly fearing the reprucussions of anything here.
