I saw it a lot in Mexico -- bros getting in street fights over girls or a brush-by. um, you're not a citizen here and don't have your typical US rights.

coincidentally enough, the influx of Chinese tourists to other countries has earned them the same ugly reputation.

2629461, I'm not worried about basketball if I'm them.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-08-17 02:19 PM
They've been released, but they've been ordered not to leave their hotel until the judge decides what to do. There's no due process in China, so that could take weeks of essentially hotel arrest. And if they decide to press charges, China doesn't give a fuck. They've jailed foreigners before, likely for less. There's no extradition treaty with China. There's a 99% conviction rate in cases like these. So if the Louis Vuitton manager feels like being an asshole or "making an example," then their asses may go to Chinese prison. *Will* it happen? Hopefully not, I'd even say it's more likely to not... but it's a more tenuous situation than I think most people realize.

I asked a friend who studies international relations with China for a living about the situation. Her eyes got big when I told her the details, and she said, "They better not give anyone a reason to be petty. Or they're toast."

So if I'm them, I don't care a scrap about basketball right now. I care about not landing in Chinese prison. Which, regardless of who they know, is an actual possibility.
2629465, I think the point is as basketball players they may get a little more...

2629468, Sure, they may.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-08-17 02:50 PM
I'm just pointing out that China has literally all the cards here, so the school/family/gov't lawyers need to give them whatever they want, because China has proven in the past they'll lock foreigners up to make an example-- and it's a pretty cut-and-dry case in this situation. It'll all depend on how lenient the folks in China choose to be-- so everyone needs to give them a reason to feel like being lenient.

Posted by mashpg89, Wed Nov-08-17 07:38 PM
The optics of China sending a 18 year old famous athlete from the United States to Chinese prison for years over petty shoplifting on a sports cultural exchange trip would be horrible.

China isn't trying to start shit with the United States and locking up a Big Baller would be a step in the wrong direction.

As long as he apologizes and Lavar doesn't say anything stupid, LiAngelo will be back at UCLA to underwhelm everybody for the next four years.

2629509, LiAngelo Ball and Big Baller's names aren't cutting much ice in China.
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Nov-08-17 07:54 PM
This isn't a "celebrity," it's the middle Ball kid and two other players.

China is probably the #1 economic power in the world right now. And they don't particularly care about the optics of the situation. Especially about three kids from a country who's President has made it a habit about talking spicy about that country for the better part of two years.

>As long as he apologizes and Lavar doesn't say anything
>stupid, LiAngelo will be back at UCLA to underwhelm everybody
>for the next four years.

This part is likely true. But the Ball family and UCLA don't have any negotiating power here.

>Think you guys are getting China and North Korea mixed up

This isn't N. Korea, but it's a fairly totalitarian regime when it wants to be. And it's not exactly fearing the reprucussions of anything here.
2629517, this is a national story though, right?
Posted by mashpg89, Wed Nov-08-17 09:04 PM
It's plastered all over ESPN I imagine. The casual sports fan in the United States will follow the story, and you can bet if he serves jail time it will be an international story. If he was some random dipshit visiting from UCLA and got jail time it would still make headlines. But college basketball players on a sports visit? And the littlest big baller? This story is getting coverage no matter what.

I know China's big shit and doesn't fear the United States, but diplomatically speaking they have two options. Accept a sincere apology and let the kids walk as a show of good faith to the United States or punish them heavily and have every talking head on faux news yapping about how it's a slap in the face to the US. Trumps dumb ass will be coerced into popping shit on Twitter, and so starts an escalation. Not saying BBB leads to WWIII but if this is mishandled it could bring unwanted tension. China has simply nothing to gain by jailing them whereas letting them walk on China's terms shows a willingness to cooperate and not be petty.

Countries ALWAYS care about the optics in international affairs.

2629683, Good article from Bleacher Report about getting arrested in China
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Nov-09-17 05:55 PM
Bottom line is: don't. And if you do, don't let it go to trial. Things work differently over there, in the sense that if a case goes to trial, there's already the presumption that the investigation is over and you're guilty; the only thing left is the sentencing.

However, the legal experts that they've talked to seem to think the most likely outcome is that the three spend 20 days under house arrest in the hotel, quietly get put on a plane to leave, and then get permanently banned from ever coming back.

That said, the article also includes a pretty harrowing story about an athlete from the U.S. working in China who's been arrested, gone to trial, and, many months later, still awaiting sentencing. And he still hasn't been allowed to contact his family.

President Donald Trump has a plan. It’ll be ready in two weeks.

From overhauling the tax code to releasing an infrastructure package to making decisions on Nafta and the Paris climate agreement, Trump has a common refrain: A big announcement is coming in just “two weeks.” It rarely does.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/21409577/ucla-bruins-players-detained-china-set-return-united-states

UCLA freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill, who have been detained in China for the past week on suspicion of shoplifting, are headed back to the United States and are scheduled to arrive later Tuesday in Los Angeles, the Pac-12 confirmed.

The players were seen checking into a Los Angeles-bound Delta flight at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, airline staff told The Wall Street Journal, who first reported that the players were heading back to the U.S.

Delta's flight tracker currently shows that two planes departed from Shanghai at around the same time Tuesday night local time, and both are scheduled to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport at around 5 p.m. PT.

Seth Curry scored 20 PPG in the G-League his first season and 24 PPG his second, making the G-League All-Star team both years.

LiAngelo Ball couldn't get on a G-League roster.

This is likely because LiAngelo Ball was a three-star recruit who wasn't going to earn minutes in the worst major conference in college basketball at the time, and Seth Curry was an All-ACC First Team and All-American Second Team player.

LiAngelo's always been slow, always been a bad defender, always been a mediocre scorer outside of standstill shooting. His only chance to make an NBA roster would've been to become a 45+% 3PT shooter consistently. Even then it'd be a stretch. He's just not an NBA prospect and never was to anyone who'd actually seen him play.

Steph, Dame and Russ were all 3 star recruits, Jimmy Butler was a 2 star recruit, PG & CJ McCollum were 3 stars, Cameron Payne was out of the league last year. Not saying Gelo would've been as good as any of those dudes but lets you know what high school rankings mean.

When you get to borderline NBA roster guys its a fine line between making a team, g-league, 10-day contract whatever.

I was just saying its probably hard for Gelo watching his brothers in national commercials and WONDERING what could've been for him.

Would any of Giannis' brothers be in the league if they're last name was Jackson?

2743769, Hitch your wagon to Melo, Gelo.

It's genuinely his only chance to ever wear an NBA uniform. (Unless he's become an exceptionally gifted shooter in the last couple of years.)
2743773, I'm definitely rooting for the kid

2743776, Dude is only a bit over 6’2?
Posted by MEAT, Sat Jul-24-21 03:55 PM
I don’t see how he sticks
2743777, I'd put him closer to 6'4. But it doesn't matter.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Jul-24-21 04:47 PM
I know people question the listed 6'5, but they could list him at 6'7, and it wouldn't matter. He's slow. Not very athletic. Can't pass. Can't dribble. Can't defend. Unless he's a consistent 40+% catch-and-shoot guy from NBA 3-point range, he has zero chance to stick.

And even if he did shoot that well... he still may not stick. Jimmer's 6'2 and an elite shooter (including off-the-bounce) with better handles and passing than Gelo, and he can't stick. If Gelo made it to even Jimmer's level (G-League All-Star/MVP overseas), it'd be incredible.
2744935, Huh? it matters a lot imo

if he weren't a guard there would be way less pressure to handle the ball and be a good playmaker
2744936, If you're a 6'7 wing who's slow, can't defend, and can't pass...
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-09-21 06:24 PM
... unless you're a Top 30 shooter in the NBA, you're just not going to stick.
2744916, 16 pts in Summer League debut . 5/8 from 3

"experts" wrong
2744937, I'd love to see him make it, because it'd show exceptionally hard work.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-09-21 06:30 PM
Slow shooting guards who can't pass or defend just don't make the NBA unless they're elite shooters. If he makes the NBA, that means he's become such an elite shooter that he can't be left off a roster. And he wasn't that kind of shooter at any point to date, so it'd show extreme discipline and hard work on his part. That sort of improvement would merit celebrating.
2744944, outside of 7 footers and athletic freaks isn't that how everybody's in...

the NBA?

and even those guys have to put in the work
2744953, Certain limitations are harder than others.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Aug-10-21 09:53 AM
LiAngelo would be, out of all NBA wings, something like bottom 10% in both foot speed and athleticism. He will be unable to defend any NBA wing-- even if he exerts maximum effort and plays the highest IQ team defense imaginable, he has physical limitations that are insanely tough to overcome. Like, Joe Harris simply can't defend NBA players either. But he's one of the best shooters in the NBA.

LiAngelo is a good, if streaky, shooter. But to stick as an end-of-rotation NBA player, I genuinely think he has to be, like, a 43%+ shooter consistently from 3. And even then, there are plenty of guys who shoot well in the G-League who just never stick as pros due to limitations.

I think there's a reason, to date, why LiAngelo hasn't even been able to make it into a G-League game, let alone an NBA game. And it's not because he doesn't work hard. He's just got to work that much harder than even other NBA players to make it work here. It's going to be a really tough road for him. And I don't think anyone expressing skepticism that he can make it is being unfairly judgmental-- they're just being practical. Exceedingly few players with his limitations become NBA players.
2744955, Stop it, Gelo is a better athlete than Joe Harris and he didn’t have…

Stop it, Gelo is a better athlete than Joe Harris and he didn’t have…

the most direct route to the NBA either, he continued to work on his game and found the right spot.

Same thing with Jeremy Lin.

The shit is not rocket science lol
2744956, Didn't say he wasn't.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Aug-10-21 11:29 AM
I said Gelo would be a bottom 10th percentile athlete on the wing in the NBA. And that's true. Might even be generous.

And again, you're describing the insane exceptions to the rule. Of course anyone *can* find a path to success. But when people say "Player X isn't an NBA player," it's because 99+% of the time, college/overseas players like that player can't make it in the NBA.

I'm rooting for him, because I have sympathy for anyone with a clear dream that has serious impediments to overcome. But again, it is exceedingly unlikely that Gelo can stick in the NBA, regardless of how Summer League goes. And if he does, it's because he's made himself into one of the best shooters in the world.
2744948, he still doesn't look like an NBA player to me but I think he

2744949, the line between what "looks like an NBA player" and doesn't is pretty...

thin.

Cam Payne of the Suns went from a 1st round pick to being cut to 10-day contracts to being out of the league, to playing in China, to the G-League, to the Phoenix Suns even starting a few games when Chris Paul was out and earning a 3/yr-$19mil contract.

Several players bounce around a similar timeline its all about getting the right opportunity so its comical for folks to say definitively that someone is or isn't a NBA player when actual NBA coaches, GM's and scouts don't see it that way.

Especially now with players coming out so young for some it takes time to mature and develop.
2744963, Payne was out of the league for like eight months
