2624401, Seattle blew it Posted by COOLEHMAGAZINE, Sun Oct-01-17 09:04 PM
For years now these guys have needed to address this wack ass offensive line and lack of identity/consistency on that side of the ball.
Schneider, Pete and Bevell kept saying everything was fine.
Now Russ stays hurt and he's definitely not developing to his fullest. And like the '85 Bears, they have squandered an all-time defense.. The window is closed.

2624402, Marshawn's team Posted by will_5198, Sun Oct-01-17 09:13 PM
now they aren't really anything on offense
offensive lines are terrible around the league so I can't even crucify them for that
I'd say it's more so a lack of identity between Bevell, Carroll and Russ
they want to be the Patriots badly on offense -- multiple, interchangeable runners and receivers, mismatch at TE to control the middle of the field -- but don't know what they hell they're doing from snap-to-snap

also, fuck Pete for having Carson in there that late in the game to get his fucking ankle broke off.
SAME exact injury that Thomas Rawls had when he was tearing the league up as a rookie in place of Marshawn. Now Rawls is on the sideline as a healthy scratch each week.
i pray to god the same doesn't happen to Carson.

2636373, remember when Seattle looked like a potential dynasty? Posted by will_5198, Fri Jan-05-18 01:53 PM
- Legion of Boom is over. Sherm tore his Achilles. Kam may not play again due to neck injuries. Earl wants out. Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril are gone. basically it's Bobby Wagner as the last elite player on that defense moving forward.
- Russ has become "The Man" on offense and done some brilliant things these past seasons, but absolutely has to take blame for the fact Seattle's offense is completely unreliable.
- even his teammates seem to call him out: "I can’t say it. How can I say this? It’s not playcalling. We go into a game knowing what the defense is going to give us, the situations we’re going to be in. And that’s on us as players. You guys can blame Bev all you want to, but the truth of the matter us, Bev is not the problem. Probably already said too much."
- 4-4 at home. outscored 68-31 against division opponents in their final two games at home, with playoffs on the line. remember when Seattle had the best homefield advantage in the NFL?

he does the "average one quarter, world-beater another" thing all the time. yes, absolutely part of the personnel -- mentioned above about Lynch bailing out the team -- but he's also the franchise quarterback.
Russ threw 26(!) of his season touchdowns in the second halves of games; 19 of those 26 in the fourth quarter. only 8 TD passes in the first halves. he is *part* of the issues for sure.

Yup, you can blame it on the terrible play calling and abysmal offensive lines, and the injuries they bequeathed, but Russ mechanics and field vision are fucked up right now. He has been unable to play consistently, to read the field consistently, to be accurate game in-game out.
The blame for that…I put on the coaches and personnel more than him…but that's where we are. Who knows if he can get that back.

2636397, I feel like your beef should be with Darrell Bevel Posted by GOMEZ, Fri Jan-05-18 02:25 PM
Russ' inconsistency has a lot to do with our shit offensive scheme (which has been described as a collection of random plays), our lack of blocking, and zero run game.
Russ has developed some bad habits, but most of that is because our best plays are basically 'Russ can you just scramble and make some magic shit happen?' I think if he had time consistently and any semblance of even a league average running game any perceived flaws in Russ' game would go away pretty quickly

but I think if they can fix their running game they can be right back in it. Pete still has a great eye for talent. As far as assistant coaches their success has caused them to lose a lot of talent on the defensive side. May want to look at a new direction on the offensive side.
Pete took most of the heat for the SB interception against the Patriots but does he call plays?

2636386, Russ quote may be more about how well he's liked than truth Posted by bshelly, Fri Jan-05-18 02:13 PM
that locker room doesn't fuck with russ. part of that is his corniness. most of it is due to the relentless idiocy of dudes like sherman undermining his position at every possible opportunity. it's a huge problem for the organization if he's as unliked as i think he is, but I wouldn't take quotes from other players about his performance on his ability to run the offense as gospel truth.

we don't know what we don't know. maybe russ is a complete jerk. i doubt it, but maybe.
what's indisputable is that the franchise has tied itself to him, for good reason. Russ is undoubtedly a top 5 qb, and it's time for the organization to start treating him like that. i'd have dumped sherman long ago, but it's obvious they should do so now that he's injured. anybody else has a problem with russ, they can kick rocks too.

2637221, Tom Brady leads a nutritional cult Posted by bshelly, Wed Jan-10-18 10:11 AM
he's as big a weirdo as they make. he's probably antivax.
yet his wack-ass personality is not an issue, because the organization supports him fully and makes it clear that anyone who fucks with brady is gone.
russ has more than earned that level of support. instead, a washed-up cover 2 corner is allowed to run the locker room and run his mouth about the franchise player every 30 seconds.

look, teammates don't have to be BFFs. You got a guy who is a top 5 QB in the league and will leave his guts out on the field for the team. I saw a play in a game toward the end of the season, I think it may have been a Thursday or Sunday night...dude got blitzed from all angles thanks to that trash Oline...got hit square in the facemask. I thought his fuckin head had come off. The NEXT play, after in his own words "readjusting my jaw" dude runs back in, ready to ball. I feel like dudes just take the whole "corny" narrative to far. Fuck does that even mean? Who exactly is "cool" on the team, then? Shit is dumb.

>how exactly did these teams see these situations playing >out? > >were they going to scheme around it? please
Seattle philosophically thought that they could stay finding athletes and teach them how to play offensive line. Perhaps they also noticed that pedigreed college offensive linemen were busting out more-and-more and thought it's a position you needn't sink a lot of resources into. Instead you get a bunch of athletic guys to compete and coach up whoever wins. Also, Wilson ran around and made it seem like their plan was workable.
Giants acquired players they just were the wrong players. They also struggled to develop anyone remotely talented that they had and, bizarrely, they consistently bet on slow footed guys who got killed by edge speed.
Broncos situation actually makes sense just didn't work out.
Paxton Lynch was a high pick. He is the pedigreed developmental player, athletic, raw, to be brought along slowly. And they tried that, he just isn't coming along and probably never will.
Trevor was drafted as depth fodder but earned everything he got in practice and by playing well when he got the chance. Athletic, good attitude, liked by teammates. Seemed like hey, we developed him this far, not sure he is the guy but if he keeps making believers out of us, lets see how far it can go.
Osweiler was the safety net. Knew the system, had played well in it before, had the measurables. Figure, if the first rounder doesn't work, and the promising scrappy guy doesn't, maybe this guys can at least do what he did before.

2636542, RE: Seattle OL, Giants OL, Broncos QB Posted by smutsboy, Sat Jan-06-18 12:47 PM
I believe that all three teams convinced themselves something would work out.
What's' mind-boggling is that they were able to convince themselves that despite relying on a plan that had already been proven a failure, they were just going to try it again and pray.
We knew last year that Denver's QBs are no longer good prospects, same with Erick Flowers or anyone else on the Giants OL.
But neither team did shit about it.

Yeah, to some extent. > >We knew last year that Denver's QBs are no longer good >prospects,
Really? After one year it was completely clear that Lynch was not going to ever be good? I don't think that's fair. And Denver also changed coaches, much like the Rams. Should the Rams have punted on Goff?
Let's be fair here.
same with Erick Flowers or anyone else on the >Giants OL.
This is true. Jerry Reese stubborn

2636617, . Posted by smutsboy, Sat Jan-06-18 08:20 PM
Goff had infinitely better pedigree than either of the dudes in Denver and a way worse team around him as a rookie.
I think it was reasonably obvious after last year that Siemien was very unlikely ever become a 'good' QB.
Lynch *maybe* but between getting beat out his rookie year by a 6th round pick and being injured all the time, I think it was a bad bet by Elway.

2636484, Here's the truth regarding O-Line, Russ, etc. Posted by PROMO, Fri Jan-05-18 08:45 PM
First of all, let me address the O-Line and the problems there. The problem with the O-Line is squarely on Tom Cable and Pete Carroll.
Pete has allowed Tom to cook with this philosophy that Cable is SOOOOOOOOOOO good that he can turn your average short-order cook at Denny's into a quality left guard. The shit ain't working, and I think it's fine to wonder how smart Cable and Carroll are in this regard. I say THAT because Pete is OBSESSED with the run. He really doesn't wanna throw the ball. He wants to smash you in the face until you submit. Because this is true, he is intricately tied into Cable, and because he is ultimately the head coach and ultimately in charge he has allowed Cable to have a say in the run game via who Cable has "coached up" and what they are good at. Now, sadly, our O-Line isn't good at anything...so...the lack of a run game is not on Bevell. It's squarely on the shoulders of Pete Carroll and Tom Cable. It's not because Bevell calls bad plays. It's because we have bad players trying to block the run. Now, the problem only becomes exacerbated when the RBs on the team are not the most talented bunch. Now you've got poor RBs trying the run the ball through a line that is even worse than they are.
As far as Russ and how the O-Line struggles have affect him, I'll say this: CLEARLY, there are too many times when the O-Line just fails to block the pass rush adequately, which causes Russ to scramble (maybe he completes it, maybe not), or to have to throw out of bounds, or worse - get sacked. Beyond that, Russell's problems lie with Russell. John Schneider and Pete Carroll always had this belief that, despite his height, Russ would develop into a passer who climbs the pocket and reads the defense similar to Drew Brees. Much to their dismay, Russ doesn't climb the pocket and we're 5 years in. Watch Russ in the pocket...even when he's protected he retreats, retreats, retreats because he's setting up his scramble in case he doesn't see open targets. Because he's so jittery and ready to run, he sometimes puts the O-Line in trouble because although they are doing an okay job, unbeknownst to them he's running around behind them and putting them in positions to get holding calls and whatnot. Also, Russ hasn't really proven that he's reading defenses that well. Most of his bread gets earned when shit breaks down and then his WRs are able to shake free and he completes passes. But watch him closely and see where he stands in there, reads the coverage and finds guys (especially throwing through tight windows or complete passes into tight coverage). It's just not there as much as it should be in year 5.
With all that being the case, the team is at an existential crossroads with Russ trying to figure out what the team IS and what the team can or should be. There's some rumblings that they should trade Russ now when his value is still high and use the picks and money saved to start rebuilding and looking for a more traditional passer. While that may seem a little crazy, the team has point blank just gotten old. We're gonna have to do some moderate rebuilding simply because of that so you really do have to evaluate if you wanna overhaul. Because, if you can find a talented, traditional pocket passer (not easy to do) then you might also find it easier to build a line around that type of guy.
As for everyone hating Russ in the locker room? I think that shit is overblown. I think a few years ago it WAS a problem but at this point, from what I know, it's not like that now.
Sherm will be fine and Earl is still a stud. Avril and maybe Kam are done. Mike Bennett has looked very average this year. Jimmy Graham is gone. Hawks will likely move on from Jeremy Lane as he's been injury prone and outplayed by younger, cheaper players. Our LBs are still good and Frank Clark and Sheldon Richardson (if he re-signs) are quality on the front line. We may have found a rejuvenated jewel in Dion Jordan.
We need to draft Saquon Barkley if possible. We also need O-Line, DB, RB and WR depth. Let's not forget that our kicker cost us THREE (THREE, YO!!!) wins this year so we'll err on positive side and say that won't happen next season. I mean, if he makes those kicks and we have those 3 wins then this discussion gets postponed for another season. I'm kinda happy we're having to have it happen now.
Anyways, fuck every other team. Go Hawks. And if you want a great follow on Twitter who breaks down this shit w/ more detail, sources and depth than I ever could, follow: https://twitter.com/DavisHsuSeattle

2637246, did they blow it? If anything, they blew a Super Bowl, but that's it. Posted by Tiger Woods, Wed Jan-10-18 12:11 PM
I think they accidentally drafted three transformative players in as many years - Chancellor in 10, Sherman in 11, Russ in 12 - and, more or less, realized the potential of those hits.
Any one of those three players could have altered the course of a franchise, and they somehow landed all three. They should have two Super Bowls to show for it, but they at least have one. I have a hard time saying they blew it. NFL windows are fleeting - you strike while the iron is hot or it cools off faster than it heated up.

Kim Chancellor is not altering the course of any franchise. He is a really, really good player and an important leader on that team. He is not Ed Reed or Ronnie Lott, he's Joey Browner or Steve Atwater. The transformative player on the back end is Earl Thomas. He is the straw.
and they somehow landed all three. They should >have two Super Bowls to show for it, but they at least have >one. I have a hard time saying they blew it. NFL windows are >fleeting - you strike while the iron is hot or it cools off >faster than it heated up.
They should have won at least two and they shouldn't be out the playoffs and looking like a team teetering on the edge of a rebuild.

if they just had a NFL kicker who kicked like one, they'd have been in the playoffs.
now, of course you can fault PC/JS for sticking with Walsh, but the kicker missing kicks has jack shit to do w/ how the defense or the offense played.
just a reminder. the hawks would be 12-4 if their kicker kicked like an NFL pro.

The kicker is not the sole reason that they missed the offs. They aren't that good of a team because there are glaring holes in the roster and coaching/playcalling that have been plastered over and covered for by talent.
This team was a juggernaut, stacked with young talent just a few years ago. Look at the roster and contracts now, and tell me that this team isn't facing a crucial offseason. It would surprise no one if they were mediocre again next year. And if they have a bad year next year, and they are going to be talking about replacing Wilson, the former franchise QB.
It's not completely over yet or anything but damn, it's close.
