I will always wonder if things could have been different if he went to a different team.

His rookie year literally gave me nightmares. I didn't like him coming out of the draft and let everyone know. Then he tore through the league and I saw the next 10 years of him in my division and started to panic.

There is a lot to be said for how the Skins handled him and for that I am thankful, but the same can be said for RG3 the quarterback. A case study to be added to the volumes of QB's chewed up and spit out by the league.

I hope he was smart and I don't read an article about him cooking turkey necks like VY.

but man, that was a fun season.

Might have delayed the inevitable by a few years, but he went to Cleveland and he was what he was.

People don't know as much about the behind the scenes arrogance and demands he placed on the coaching staff that contributed to his flame out in D.C.

I feel like he was gonna self destruct anyways given all the information.

he most certainly had a hand in his own demise. the Washington football team also mishandled him. he wouldn't have been able to be such a diva in a properly functioning organization.

I mean, dude couldn't read defenses, throw correct routes, or even take the proper amount of steps on his drops. This was true in DC under Shanny in year 2, true under Gruden, and true in Cleveland.

I feel like the only way he could have been handled better is if a franchise with clout and history (Pitt, GB) would have sat him for a year, maybe two. And that's hard to do when someone's drafted that high. Plus given his enormous ego, it's 50/50 if sitting him right out the gate would mature him or damage him even further.

Dunno. But yeah, the Skins could have done a better job.

It's one thing to run around and pull plays out of your ass to cover for your lack of sound fundamentals in college (right, Johnny?), it's another to try and do it in a league where any player and half the coaches on the opposite sideline can easily break you in half for trying it. Mobile/scramble QBs that made it work in the NFL also had the tools to stay in the pocket and deliver and the knees/body composition to take a hit. RGIII had neither.

His 49.low or whatever he ran at Baylor is still flirting with world class, though making US teams is a lot harder than that.

You don't really want to be at explosive extension when the back of your knee doesn't really exist any more.

I fell for it too. I thought he had the brains to last in the NFL but apparently he had a sense of entitlement.

Pretty sure I read that he demanded the OC change the playbook to a pro-style offense even though he wasn't ready for it.

His body couldn't withstand that much running.

Pro-style was his only chance at longevity in the league but he still got hurt.

I think the Shanahans planned on making a gradual transition, but again, that was predicated on him being durable enough to play for a long time.

Either way, he doesn't make that stand without the owner's blessing. It was just a horrible set of relationships all around the team at that point.

He was pretty accurate as a passer, didn't throw too many interceptions and had the heart to take a hit...

but nobody in their right mind was investing that kind of time and effort into converting him, especially after they've invested all those draft picks.

And the Skins definitely wouldn't be the organization to pull it off.

In retrospect, that hero ball shit buried his own grave.

That being said, I was actually at that Ravens game and it was the best Skins experience I've ever witnessed in my 30+ years as a fan.

and also the game I realized that between him and Shanahan, his body wasn't going to survive.

maybe sit a year and give it another shot in a year..... Randal Cunningham did that and came back to have one of the best seasons a QB has ever had....

but if you're not going to work hard nor really want to be a great QB....

Why does the black dude have to always be a star? Or he is out of the league. I see a whole bunch of dudes making millions for being back ups, or 3rd string, and last a long time in the league, being just that. No one gives a fuck, no one talks about how they are washed, no one berates them for sucking. There are 96 jobs. He can't be #94?

I think real progress will come when it is acceptable for black dudes to suck and be back ups and clip board holders and make checks, without being seen as washed our career over. So RG3 didn't pan out as a superstar, can't he, or any of the other black QB's just be a back up to someone and live their life? Hell, he is good enough to be 3rd string.

one of the tasks of a backup is to know your role. Black or White, you don't see many guys go from STAR to backup, because their ego can't take it. You need a backup who gets ready to play, but is comfortable with the fact that he likely won't, and isn't gonna raise a stink about how he should be the starter.

Mike Vick is prolly the highest profile backup in recent memory, and he only was willing to do that because he had been in prison, and that was his only way back into the league.

Guys who have been at the STAR level and gone on to have multiple seasons as a backup are rare.

His whole "I'm the best QB in the NFL" when he was still fighting the losing QB battle in D.C. might hunt him even if he goes hard on the "I'm just here to do what my team needs me to do" type stuff solid backups have to say when showing folks they aren't thinking about rocking the boat.

And how many "athletic scramblers" that are too injured to be either of those things get jobs?

It's sad but it's over.
