2617111, Yes, but also because that jumper is so strange. Posted by Ryan M, Sat Jul-08-17 09:57 AM
Like I can't remember someone who wasn't Kevin Martin who was successful with a shot that looked like that.
|
2617112, And yet he has shown the ability to be quite efficient w it Posted by LA2Philly, Sat Jul-08-17 10:08 AM
One SL game doesn't change that. For some reference, he also looked subpar during UCLA's pre-season games.
It's one thing to have unorthodox form and be a poor shooter, it's another to have an unorthodox yet effective jumper. There's are multiple examples of that and in Lonzo's case, when he shoots driving off his right hand he brings the ball up in a more typical path - if that makes you feel any better.
|
2617276, has he been doing this in SL? Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Mon Jul-10-17 04:37 PM
>There's are multiple examples of that and in Lonzo's case, >when he shoots driving off his right hand he brings the ball >up in a more typical path - if that makes you feel any better.
in college he had a very strong tendency to shoot while driving to his left and avoided shooting driving right, pretty clearly because of that slingshot sideways shooting motion. haven't watched any SL but don't know how he's gonna ameliorate that without making an adjustment to his shooting mechanics.
|
2617399, I don't think he's taken any mid-range shots in SL Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Jul-11-17 09:26 PM
Regardless, I don't think he's comfortable shooting off his because of the slingshot like you said but I have seen him do it smoothly...it's going to be a matter of him gaining confidence in it and once opposition starts to sit on his left hand, he's a really smart kid who will realize that he needs to start using it more.

clearly he wasn't as committed to that fucked up fake larry bird behind-the-ear catapult horseshit release he had. this sped up one-motion release is gonna make him an 80+ FT shooter and 35% 3FG shooter in year two.
you know what that means? 18ppg in year two.
and i'm upping all that bullshit without mercy, so enjoy your fuckin summer, because winter is mine.

BI's confidence carrying over and bolstered by the work he has put in on his jumper - additionally, full effort defensively and being extremely vocal with the team.
Lonzo making the right pass, every single time....a little too unselfish bc he passed up some great paint looks after he got there but that's far easier to correct than tunnel vision. The recognition and quickness of his outlet pass is ridiculous. No problem with his shots, he has shown he can hit from NBA range and he will do so.
Thomas Bryant's effort matched his skill...up and down all night, crashing the boards, jumper looked very clean. On the other end of that, Zubac looked in terrible shape and it showed.
Kuzma's offensive skill-set is dope - great passer for his size, moves really well, and has extended his range. However, he most impressed me defensively - moved a lot better laterally than I thought.
Hart looked really nervous offensively and he was rushing his shot. Defensively, he can obviously play.

2617167, We very well may have gone 4-0 in this draft. Posted by Cold Truth, Sun Jul-09-17 02:02 AM
Yeah, it's summer league.
To be clear, by "4-0" I'm just saying I think all these guys are players and I think the three "other" guys in this draft are going to put play their draft position.
Contributors on good teams. Guys who might get traded for someone down the road after endearing themselves to the Lakers fan base enough that we don't really want to part ways even if an established all star is the return.
More to the point, I tho k we landed guys who fit well as a unit.
-Kuzma is the new Nance. He's shown more offensive tools than expected and yeah, he's essentially a prototypical 3D guy.
-Hart will be a fantastic backup to Zo. His four year tenure shows and he's going to walk in as a leader.
-Bryant! Tonight wasn't his night. He's the one I'm watching because he adds some nice size and athleticism in addition to that burst of energy. He seems equally comfortable rolling or popping. He could develop into a nice defensive anchor who isn't an afterthought on offense.
Zo showed his ass tonight. That's exactly the guy we've been sold. Last night was overblown but tonight we saw the guy we've been marketed the past three months and if that's the guy we get going forward?
That'ss the perfect guy to bind these other pieces into a cohesive unit. All in alli think we just added some nice depth to this team and we're unquestionably better today than we were before the draft.
|

I see yall talking about Lonzo Ball and Kuzma and all the rest but other players need some love.
The promise this young man is showing is remarkable. I'm not sure if we're allowed to post full highlights but he was cooking out there.
Cavs need to sign him, Tavares, and hope Kay Felder keeps improving. Why did we sign Jose Calderon again?
Jayson Tatum out here justifying his draft selection killing it out there. De Aaron Fox looks great as well.
The only question is which one of these guys is on that CJ Mccollum? The dude that is going that bag if someone gives him a chance to play and show promise over a few years earning his spot in the league.

It's deep and pretty top heavy to me. I can easily see like 10 of the top 12-13 picks becoming stars down the road. Fultz was the consensus #1 guy, but I could easily see Tatum, Jackson, Fox, Smith Jr., Monk, etc. emerging as the best player of the class.

Lonzo Ball out Monday with groin injury, will miss matchup vs. De'Aaron Fox
Los Angeles Lakers rookie point guard Lonzo Ball will sit out Monday's Las Vegas Summer League game against the Kings with a groin injury, a source confirmed to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.
The injury isn't considered serious but the Lakers are playing it safe with Ball, who was selected No. 2 overall in this year's draft.
"He's fine," the source told ESPN.
Ball has had the injury since last week, the source told ESPN.
The matchup with the Kings had been highly anticipated because it would pit Ball against fellow rookie De'Aaron Fox, who was selected No. 5 overall this year.
USA Today Sports first reported news that Ball would sit out Monday's game with the injury.

Fox got the best of Ball in the NCAA tournament, when he and the Kentucky Wildcats beat Ball's UCLA team 86-75.
Fox scored a career-high 39 points in that game, with four assists and three rebounds. Ball finished with 10 points, eight assists and four turnovers.
Kings fans were looking forward to Monday's matchup, and team management is hosting a free watch party inside Golden 1 Center.
Ball was looking to continue his momentum from Saturday when he compiled his first triple-double with the Lakers for 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in an 86-81 loss to Boston. That was a turnaround from his Lakers summer league debut the night before when he shot 2-for-15, including 1-for-11 from 3-point range, in an overtime loss to the Clippers.
Fox averaged 17.5 points, 4 assists and 4 steals in his first two games with the Kings in Las Vegas.
The Lakers will face the Kings without Ball and last year's second overall pick, Brandon Ingram. After he suffered a cramp toward the end of the Lakers' first game on Friday, the team opted to hold out Ingram from the remainder of summer league for precautionary reasons. Ball had said he wants to win, work on his shot more in summer league and develop chemistry with his teammates.
"My shot is off," Ball said on Saturday. "But everyone knows I will keep shooting. My confidence is there."

Nor was BI according to them and Zo mentioned that as well during an interview. As for Zo, now we know why (dealing with adductor aka groin issues, a back to back will certainly set those off).
Hart (sprained ankle) and Kuzma (cramping) are out as well. In the end, this is summer league yet lots of mad still roaming around today lmao. I personally love it especially since Lonzo himself clearly doesn't listen to any of the peanut gallery and tunes out all the noise.

so, now we here. and he tryna flip it like we was sensitive when it was his sensitivity that caused all of it. all because his thick neck dog head guy wasn't gettin pub.

he took less than 20 shots all season that weren't 3s, lay ups or dunks...last year
so he actually hasn't been showing his ability to score in the paint or the post or anywhere under the 3 point line ...
he obviously had the ability to do so, but he hadn't shown it.
until tonight..

2617508, Wait you called him out for not watching Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Thu Jul-13-17 01:33 AM

2617510, He's explaining the context of why Basa is reading that criticism Posted by Cold Truth, Thu Jul-13-17 01:40 AM
>How can he watch (and see) what is not shown?
That's not what WC is saying. Basa said he's reading that people are concerned that he wouldn't be able to do certain things. WC is saying that Zo played a style that lent itself to the things Basa always reading, so if Basa was bothered by those things then he must not have watched Zo that much.

and yes Lonzo is a hell of an athlete even for D1 standards.
In college he got a number of those dunks/layups aka points in the paint off alley oops, putbacks, or blowing by guys with his speed and vertical aka aspects of his athleticism.

2617518, them two niggas above are dumb as fuck, shawn. simple as that. Posted by Basaglia, Thu Jul-13-17 08:39 AM
"Glad he finally used his superior athleticism"
^^^^those were my first words. i've known of the kid since 2014. the point was he's always been a superior athlete and i'm glad he used his athleticism last night, because chatter had already started on twitter and sports boards that he's having trouble getting by people. i didn't feel like he was even TRYING that hard to get by people. he was feeling shit out. so, i was annoyed by people creating false narratives about lonzo's ability, because i know it's not true. he's been one of the top 3 athletes on the court in every game.
somehow those two chuckleheads made this about what i thought lonzo ball lacked in athleticism, as opposed to what i ACTUALLY SAID. and it ain't like i wrote a lot of shit that could confuse someone. them niggas just dumb, man.
>and yes Lonzo is a hell of an athlete even for D1 standards. > >In college he got a number of those dunks/layups aka points in >the paint off alley oops, putbacks, or blowing by guys with >his speed and vertical aka aspects of his athleticism.

you supported WC's wrong-headed ass point. all your dumb ass had to say was "yeah, WC misunderstood what Basa was saying."....you ain't say that tho. you regurgitated that shit like it was accurate and tried to explain to Shawn what WC was saying...which was WRONG.
so again, shut your dumb ass up.
and not only am i safely behind a computer, nigga. i'm sitting in my underwear, deciding which movie i'm bout to go see.

just like most west coast basketball.... because of time zone you watch very little then come on to make claims about players you've hardly seen play...

man miss me.... You probably have seen the kid play 5 times maybe... You ain't staying up till 1 in the morning on watching Pac 12 basketball....

Brandon's going to do it all at least pretty well and a few things great, and Lonzo is just special in the things he sees and the passes he makes. Lakers fans are going to have some fun, and nobody should have any reason to be mad unless they root for another WC team(in a few years) or the C's and they're pretending they're still all into that.

2617597, Another triple double Posted by LA2Philly, Thu Jul-13-17 11:23 PM
And Kuzma - when he's not shooting from 2 feet behind the line - has been so wet on his jumper. As for Lonzo's, he got tapped 4 times tonight - is what it is, yet another game where he controlled the pace and was the catalyst for everyone else. My favorite part was the play that sealed the game: Zo calling for the double screen which was followed by him reversing his dribble and Kuz re-setting then popping while Zubac cut to the rim...perfect call and setup for a wide open Kuzma 3 to push the lead 9 with a minute left.

DSJ is going to be dope. I think that's clear.
Zo really does look transcendent though, even with his shooting struggles. I don't think anyone else in this draft would be as great a fit for this particular squad either.
Zo is the proverbial "make everyone around him better" player. He's going to transform this team on a cultural level. I don't think anyone else in this draft would bring that quality to the table.
Likewise, Kuzma really does look like a steal and a major bonus to the DLo trade.
Summer League is summer league though. I'm curious to see how these two integrate with the rest of the team but the

Outcome wasn't good

2617805, There's a 50/50 chance he hits someone with an oop Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Jul-17-17 11:10 AM
And his ball handling is sound. I don't think he'll have much problem with that to be honest.

2617810, having Clarkson will help. and his cutting opens up a lot of give and go. Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Jul-17-17 11:48 AM
in fact i wouldnt be surprised to see JC bring the ball up in late situations vs ball-hounders, at least in the beginning
re: the cutting, if the D picks up full to 3/4 that give and go could create fake "transition" for him to do lonzo stuff

2617811, He'll look up court for a quick outlet like he always does Posted by LA2Philly, Mon Jul-17-17 11:50 AM
That's the beauty of a player who is willing to pass every play and understands ball movement is a very powerful tool

2617801, DSJ reminds me of a young D. Wade.. I like his game... Posted by LegacyNS, Mon Jul-17-17 09:56 AM

2617806, Yep. I still like DSJ. He's done nothing to lower his stock IMO Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Jul-17-17 11:11 AM
That said I don't think he brings the sort of seismic cultural shift Lonzo will.

2617840, Interesting post on DSJ's mechanics... Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jul-17-17 03:02 PM

Thoughts? (LA2Philly, I'm looking at you, lol)

2617843, Saw it earlier, the premise is wrong Posted by LA2Philly, Mon Jul-17-17 03:21 PM
From thse clips, there's no way to know whether DSJ has poor landing mechanics -there's no information regarding his normal landing mechanics. What DSJ needs to be weary of, and this goes for any high leaper, is the risk-reward of leaping into traffic bc it's those unknown variables in the air that can really put you into adverse, high risk situations.
The higher and longer you're off the ground, the more risk you're at for contact and impairing your landing. The farther you have to come down, the higher the level of ground reaction forces (GRF) that your body has to attenuate upon landing. The intersection of impaired landing and higher GRF is increased risk.
The DRose comparison with DSJ holds in that both are under-sized high leapers but a major difference from what I have seen between the two is their movement patterns: DSJ is more of a straight-line jumper whereas DRose consistently contorted himself, impairing his landing even on plays where there wasn't major contact. Additionally, one of DRose's fav moves is the jump stop - which is high load movement - whereas DSJ, from what I have seen, tends to favor less jarring movements such as the 1-2 step, fake reverse turnaround jumper.

2618061, Good looks, thanks for the detailed reply. Posted by wallysmith, Thu Jul-20-17 09:21 AM
I love reddit's hot takes but the post seemed incomplete.

2617846, I can see how he blew out an ACL...yeesh Posted by auragin_boi, Mon Jul-17-17 03:22 PM
my knees hurt just watching it.
He's going to have to learn how to land and then stop being so reckless with his drives. Be more deliberate and agile. Will extend his career.
Sore knees at 24 won't be fun.

2617968, he's young and still dunking w/ all his might. he'll learn to dial it back Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Jul-19-17 08:03 AM
