2616463, The Luke Kennard Train is leaving the station.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jul-02-17 12:31 PM
We told you to get on while he was at Duke. Some still slept.

Now he's doing everything in Summer League. Scoring efficiently. Creating for others. Even playing tough defense. Kid's IQ is off the charts.

Maybe some of you can run quickly enough to hop onto the caboose before the train disappears over the horizon. But it's leaving the station. I'd start sprinting.
2616467, nah, it's just for duke fans. not even piston fans get a piece.
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Jul-02-17 12:53 PM

the rest of these niggas can go cyse malik monk and his broke jazz player raggedy ass fade.
2616470, I'm glad the Twitterverse is noting his defense the last two days.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jul-02-17 01:13 PM
He wasn't great or anything last year, but I tried telling folks, he was greatly improved from freshman to sophomore year, he was better than Allen and Jackson defensively last year, and frankly wasn't too far behind Matt Jones, whose defense was cysed all season based mostly on his rep from 2015. The fundamentals and IQ are there.

He improves his game consistently in every way. It should also help in the NBA that he won't be asked to do absolutely everything for his team on offense the way he had to do for Duke the first few months of the season. And he's looked strong defensively in the Summer League so far.

He'll struggle with some quicker guys, of course, but he'll make up for it elsewhere. He should be a passable defender when all is said and done-- unlikely to ever be a great defender or anything, but the liability talk has been overblown.

(By the way, to another member of Ellenson's bandwagon, he's been looking good too. A little too in love with the 3 ball, but the offense and the rebounding are so nice. I'm still a fan.)
2616498, I'm still sleep

2616701, gotta be mad to state something this false.

2616704, There's nothing to be mad about. Just a simple observation which I'm
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Wed Jul-05-17 08:10 AM
sure isn't held solely by me. We all have a tendency to be homers, Duke fans just take it to another level IMO.
2616714, proof in the pudding. i ain't call him an all-star.
Posted by Basaglia, Wed Jul-05-17 10:07 AM

in fact, i can only think of 5 or 6 duke guys i've said would be all-stars since i been on this board. out of dozens of first rounder and quite a few lottery pick, that ain't much.

jabari
kyrie
justise
oak
giles
tatum

sounds about right. so "literally every Duke player that gets drafted in the 1st round" is just you being mad.

(9) Do NOT make posts telling other players to go read your other posts.
2616741, So, basically he'll perform to his expectation level?
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Wed Jul-05-17 12:31 PM
I mean, Dennis Smith Jr was picked at #9, Monk at #11, and Donovan Mitchell at #13 so it's not like he's being dismissed or forgotten. Just 1 pick after Monk tells me the NBA scouts were high on him.

I'm just wondering what prompted this post other than him playing at Duke? Like, why should I feel compelled to hop aboard a train you can't say with confidence will lead to anything great?
2616827, Both his alma mater and his upward trajectory.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-06-17 01:40 AM
As I said elsewhere, he went from being someone who wasn't expected to be an early departure to a lottery pick in one season. And he's from my school. And I felt like celebrating the fact that I feel he'll continue to shine.
2616835, top 20 5* recruits arent expected to be early entrants?

y'all play too many games. niggas still tryna reconcile jj redick being 33 and making 23 mil for a year's worth of services after MOST of Y'ALL thought he'd be out the league by now.

i mean, luke kennards ain't supposed to spend a couple years in the toughest conference in the country and be a lotto pick. it don't happen. theo pinson and jackson were 5 stars too.
2616850, so then there are no expectations on anyone ever?
Posted by cgonz00cc, Thu Jul-06-17 09:48 AM
cant be both. his 247 h.s. class is full of early entrants above him with a bunch below him as well.

we arent talking about someone who has significantly outperformed their assessments.

also, im not your antagonist here. i like kennard, and im glad hes a piston. but he is doing normal 5* recruit things so far, and no one can be said to have whiffed on his evaluation thus far.
2616853, we identify the OAD, early entry candidates every.single.year

So you telling me 21-34 ranked, depending on the site, luke kennard was SUPPOSED to be gon by his second year? hell, miles bridges was SUPPOSED to leave.
2616857, This might be my checkout point for a while.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-06-17 11:11 AM
Because I know that you and many other posters on this board understand that the college rankings are *not* made by NBA potential and that, while the Top 25 recruits (and under) with elite athleticism leave nearly every time, and these are the lion's share of the top recruits, the ones who are top recruits but who are less athletic tend to stay. I mean, I could go back and dive through the examples... but I know that you know this. And I know the others know this. (Well, most of them.)
2617022, HUH?
Posted by Premiere, Fri Jul-07-17 02:47 PM
Fuck yeah you better. Most folks drafted are non-NBA players. Shit, you get a guy who can play 25 minutes for you and be productive and stay on the floor against a good offense, that motherfucker's about to make $20 million because guys like that help teams win.
2616731, I think Luke being drafted 12th is a reflection of the talent level
Posted by bentagain, Wed Jul-05-17 11:27 AM
in this draft class

Which was my interpretation of the Cs' - 6ers trade

i.e. I don't see a superstar

I liked Luke, even though he's a dookie

love his game, maybe a Jeff Hornacek type of career...?

so put some metrics on it

ya'll always do this B$...you didn't really say anything at all

what do you project for his rookie year

I think DET shipped some guys, so he's gonna get run

...10 or more PPG...5 or more APG...?

say it with your chest (c)

I'll go on record and say this is the worst draft class since 2000.
2616734, It's like this:
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Jul-05-17 12:02 PM
You've got a kid who wasn't expected to be an early departure coming into Duke.

He makes a huge leap in the offseason, has the most efficient offensive season in Duke history, plays himself into the lottery.

Looks completely at ease in Summer League. Averaged something like 16 PPG, got some run handling the ball, helped alleviate concerns that he "can't defend." It's all trending upward, because he's a gym rat, a brilliant shooter, and a high-IQ guy.

I've been calling him Diet Coke Ginobili. Good player on a good team, high IQ, can do it all, will make clutch plays for good teams for years to come. I think by Year 3, something like 15-4-4 is in play if SVG gives him serious tick. I'm concerned about his immediate impact if they keep KCP, just due to sharing minutes, but if he plays, I wouldn't be shocked if he cracked double figures year one as a 20-year-old. Otherwise, it'll be a waiting game... but I don't doubt him.

I'm just excited by his trajectory. He's got a Redickesque work ethic and a more diverse skill set than Redick had. If he keeps growing and improving like Redick did, then yeah. Ginobili-lite impact. He's got a high floor and a high IQ. Hard not to be excited as a fan when watching him play.
2616736, Ginobili wasn't a starter
Posted by bentagain, Wed Jul-05-17 12:17 PM
Thanks for the clarification though

Just checked DET roster

He should be able to crack that starting lineup by seasons end

If the benos, kcp and reggie bullocks of the world are ahead of him

= L
2616860, you could've stopped right here, you do this every year lol...

Ginobili was a GREAT player, incredible passer, superb athleticism, mad genius bball IQ (for good and ill). don't really see that much of a comparison besides being white lefty 2 guards.

Redick is an elite NBA shooter. I know Kennard is a good shooter & has a broader skillset but he doesn't have an elite-level NBA skill.

2617107, WTF are ya'll talking about?
Posted by bentagain, Sat Jul-08-17 06:26 AM
Yes, I posted a hypothetical situation about a team I don't follow

after drafting a guard in the 1st round

and subsequently acquiring a guard in a trade

one would assume that team would then need to move a guard from their roster

which they did

I don't see the gotcha moment here

because ya'll already heard rumblings that KCP was going to be let go

CONGRATS!!! You're all geniuses for knowing something that a person with no inside knowledge was able to deduce from the outside looking in

now...back to the point at hand

if DET moved their starting forward from last year's roster after drafting a forward last year...I stand by the statement that they must be higher on Ellenson than Luke being that it looks like they're making room for him to start

DET is still acquiring guards with Bradley and now Calloway

with my novice bball acumen compared to the experts on this board

I would deduce that Luke isn't going to get enough minutes in DET this year for this agenda to be a win

...shining in summer league or not...

he's still behind a handful of guards in the assumed rotation

and none of those guys are exactly superstars by the way...but I'll let you all keep patting yourselves on the back in here

have a good weekend.
