2595525, Champions League Rd of 16: the Arda they come
Posted by benny, Tue Feb-14-17 12:37 PM
We get a bunch of very decent matchups this round, with every game achieving some degree of watchability. I'm not expecting much of PSG, and unless Cavani goes supernova today the die might be cast for the French champs. But since we're not playing Caen or Bordeaux...

Tue 14 Feb
2:45 Benfica - Borussia Dortmund
2:45 Paris Saint Germain - FC Barcelona

Wed 15 Feb
2:45 Bayern Munich - Arsenal FC
2:45 Real Madrid - Napoli

Tue 21 Feb
2:45 Bayer Leverkusen - Atletico Madrid
2:45 Manchester City - Monaco

Wed 22 Feb
2:45 FC Porto - Juventus
2:45 Sevilla - Leicester City
2595536, Actually home for change. Too bad arsenal is tomorrow
Posted by calminvasion, Tue Feb-14-17 01:29 PM
Been ages since I've seen a CL game live - pre semi or finals. Oh well

I hope you are wrong and psg can keep it competitive

Posted by theeraser, Tue Feb-14-17 03:32 PM
2595567, you won't be shocked to hear this is our best half of the season (by far)
Posted by benny, Tue Feb-14-17 03:48 PM
I wasn't sure about putting Matuidi in an unconventional position again (as against Arsenal), but it's working. Helped by Barca's strange lack of sync to be sure, but with what Di Maria and Draxler are doing on the wings (interesting that the two times they switched led to 2 shots and 1 goal) and Verrati/Rabio eating up the middle, I'm cautiously optimistic we may not fuck this up.

Let's see what the second half brings
2595569, DUDE. keep it up PSG!
Posted by bshelly, Tue Feb-14-17 03:58 PM
2595570, holy sh*t @ that whole sequence, from Trapp onward

The Barça faithful will have their knives out for Lucho this week
2595592, As they should. But the transfer business is a bigger issue.
Posted by theeraser, Tue Feb-14-17 05:16 PM
2595584, ok, Barca was weak-sauce, but that was as perfect as I've seen us play
Posted by benny, Tue Feb-14-17 04:39 PM
apart from Pastore's haircut I can't think of a single bad thing to say about PSG today

Posted by nighttripper, Wed Feb-15-17 01:29 AM
We were close to the Auteuil side, they were relentless all game
They need to let Boulogne rock too though
2595631, Gotta give it up for Unai
Posted by nighttripper, Wed Feb-15-17 03:13 AM
I've been hating a lot, for what I still feel are valid reasons, but he's got the team ready for d day, and there's no fronting on that. One thing in particular I gotta give him credit for is his trust in the youth. We finished the game with three kids from the academy yesterday. Rabiot and Kimpembe played like BAWSES all day. Granted, this is the mission statement Nasser handed him, but there's no way Blanc plays Presnel last night...he would have come up with a 3 5 2 or some shit.

Also:,Kluivert claiming Draxler was clutch

Also: Angel is a big game player
2595632, Also, in the crock pot: la Ligue 1 is the best league going right now
Posted by nighttripper, Wed Feb-15-17 03:18 AM
Not gonna expound right now, but best believe if Monaco gives City the business I'm unloading everything

Posted by bshelly, Wed Feb-15-17 07:39 AM
2595647, nice
Posted by benny, Wed Feb-15-17 09:31 AM
I've been reading that this was only a good atmosphere as far as the Qatari years go (aka nothing to do with the 90s era), but it's still cool to feel that energy radiate through the screen. Last time I went to le Parc was for a drab 0-0 against Montpellier, so I'd love to go back one day if the stands keep being allowed to amp things up.

also, Rabiot-Kante-Pogba in Russia... I might have to not boycott that, dammit
2595662, fans groups are still not allowed in the Boulogne stands
Posted by nighttripper, Wed Feb-15-17 11:30 AM
not sure I made that clear

it's only on the Auteuil side that they can purchase group tickets and bring in props, so that's the only place where they have flags, drums, banners, etc
as a result, the call and response (ALLEZ PARIS/PARIS EST MAGIQUE) is a bit underwhelming

but still, I felt it was loud pretty much the whole game yesterday
2595598, Di Maria showed Messi how much help he doesn't have #hush
Posted by FILF, Tue Feb-14-17 05:27 PM

2595641, boy PSG was on one. That shit looked like an obviously scripted FIFA game
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Feb-15-17 07:55 AM
2595660, shittiest game i think i've seen them play
Posted by thejerseytornado, Wed Feb-15-17 11:20 AM
leo looked unengaged, suarez was a ghost, andre gomes took forever to make mediocre decisions, iniesta was absolutely unable to keep up, busquets was a step slow the whole game, s. roberto was underwhelming and proved why aleix vidal took his starting role, and alba didn't help neymar out at all.

pique and umititi were ok. MAtS saved it from being 6-0, and Neymar tried. that's IT.

seemed like the ship had been righted this weekend. this was pathetic.

you think we playing chess, but i'm playing mad-making. Basaglia
2595676, Gomes is awful. Valencia rinsed yall on that one
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Feb-15-17 12:54 PM

Posted by nighttripper, Wed Feb-15-17 03:00 PM
.
2595698, Option A: Arsenal gut this out, limit the damage, maybe grab an AG.
Posted by Buck, Wed Feb-15-17 03:09 PM
Option B: Bayern score five.
2595714, well, I was optimistic at HT
Posted by dillinjah, Wed Feb-15-17 04:08 PM
>Option B: Bayern score five.

Good chance you'll end up being right here.

Oh great, Walcott is in now
2595716, yep, you were right. Damn you, Buck.
Posted by dillinjah, Wed Feb-15-17 04:33 PM
2595718, It really was looking good for a while.
Posted by Buck, Wed Feb-15-17 04:38 PM
I think that at the half, Bayern collectively looked around the dressing room, and said, "oh yeah, we're Bayern."

Meanwhile, in the visitor's dressing room, Arsenal said, "oh yeah, we're Arsenal."
2595719, wow they actually got 5
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Feb-15-17 04:43 PM
2595729, 1st half: Option A....2nd half: Option B materializes smh

2595732, "We mentally collapsed" - Arsene
Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Feb-15-17 06:10 PM
About the 1000th time you can say that in the past 10 years.

How long are we going to sit around and do the same ole shit with the same ole results? O yeah, until Wenger decides to retire. How many fucking times do you have to see the same thing happen year in and year out before you need to make a change to the make-up of the team? If the manager cannot see that, then you obviously need to change the manager. It's just the fucking reality.

SAME SHIT, DIFFERENT YEAR.
2595734, I think he's done. Just hope we get top 4. And a TOP replacement
Posted by theeraser, Wed Feb-15-17 06:39 PM
2595735, Well you'll still beat us
Posted by bshelly, Wed Feb-15-17 06:52 PM
2595740, fuck your reverse jinx.
Posted by dillinjah, Wed Feb-15-17 09:04 PM
to be honest, there's no excuse for spurs to not finish above arsenal. It'll prolly come down to that last derby.
2595741, if we turn injuries off, i might agree with you
Posted by bshelly, Wed Feb-15-17 09:24 PM
but beyond dier and son (who doesn't count with lamela gone), we don't have a single reserve who isn't relegation zone quality.
2595813, i really wish poch would give GNK a run
Posted by Drizzit, Thu Feb-16-17 01:53 PM
he at least provides spark off the bench. wonder if i'm not seeing something defensively with him, but it can't be worse than son vs Liverpool.
2595764, One reason: There are an even worse bottler than Arse-Anal
Posted by FILF, Thu Feb-16-17 01:57 AM
>to be honest, there's no excuse for spurs to not finish above
>arsenal. It'll prolly come down to that last derby.

2595777, who's the front-runner?
Posted by benny, Thu Feb-16-17 09:27 AM
2595822, Hard to say, but I personally want Allegri
Posted by LA2Philly, Thu Feb-16-17 02:22 PM
The choice should have been Conte but the board was never going to force Wenger out.
2595839, No, the choice should have been Pep.
Posted by theeraser, Thu Feb-16-17 03:55 PM
2595843, I could see that, esp if he brings in Dybala
Posted by benny, Thu Feb-16-17 04:42 PM
dunno how much cash we're talking about but since we're edging closer to a nuclear holocaust with every waking second might as well go for it tbph
2595846, Arsenal aint got the juice to fork up the 80m+ it'll cost to get Dybala
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-16-17 05:15 PM
2595894, perhaps, but that's what a reboot would take
Posted by benny, Fri Feb-17-17 11:32 AM
of course they may try the cheap option with Koeman, or somewhere in between by pursuing Tuchel (+PEA?). Interestingly Barca is allegedly surveying both of them as potential Enrique replacements
2595929, this is a thing Dybala did 15mins ago

also, Arsene, the roster isn't very good.
2596454, is Jardim being talked about for Arsene's job at all?
Posted by benny, Tue Feb-21-17 03:01 PM
obvs the historical parallel would be interesting (both coming over from Monaco), but from a strict tactical POV he'd be a huge catch. Also he's proven he can work with a limited budget and youngsters, should Arsenal decide they like their spending strategy
2596464, Based solely on this first 45 v citeh...he should be

Posted by benny, Tue Feb-21-17 03:48 PM

Posted by nighttripper, Tue Feb-21-17 04:04 PM
that was the right call
2596504, The keeper slid for the ball, missed it, caught Aguero.
Posted by theeraser, Tue Feb-21-17 04:24 PM
2596515, nope. aguero was airborne, subasic slowed down, too.
Posted by nighttripper, Tue Feb-21-17 04:32 PM
2596713, RE: nope. aguero was airborne, subasic slowed down, too.
Posted by upUPNorth, Wed Feb-22-17 01:18 PM
that wasn't a dive man, the only angle/replay it looked like that was the last super slo-mo one from behind, and that's how it looks when you run really fast lol your feet aren't on the ground. The keeper slowing down doesn't matter, he still swung his leg out and caught his shin, it wasn't low to the ground (he was 'airborne').
2596756, it was textbook diving.
Posted by nighttripper, Wed Feb-22-17 03:57 PM
2596794, Maybe he went to ground easily. But the keeper fouled him. Inarguable.

Posted by benny, Tue Feb-21-17 04:07 PM
I'll be honest I'm not as mad as I should be at PSG not leading the league. Monaco is THAT good
2596489, it sure looks like he is
Posted by nighttripper, Tue Feb-21-17 04:10 PM
