2579570, LA2P's of reddit saying it looks like classic tear
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Tue Nov-29-16 08:57 PM
Theyre guessing Lakers are calling it a strain til MRI where they can confirm its torn and hes done for the year.

Sucks if true given he was having a bit of a revial year

2579574, The Thompson test can pretty much rule out Achilles full tears
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Nov-29-16 09:11 PM
Not sure who you are reading on reddit but a Thompson test has an established .96 sensitivity...meaning it can rule out full Achilles tears with a false positive rate of only 4%. An MRI would be used to confirm that but you don't need an MRI to have a very good indicator of whether it's a full tear vs a strain. If Nunez knows his stuff (and he's given every indication that he does esp with his technique while evaluating injuries during games), then if it's being called a strain, it's more than likely a strain.

Lastly, a "classic tear" would occur during active plantar-flexion of the foot where the Achilles activates and tears. Looking at the replay, Nick doesn't have a pain response until he lands on one foot which immediately tells me it's likely a high impact dorsiflexion mechanism which can also damage the Achilles via tensioning it (stretching) but doesn't place nearly the amount of load as plantar-flexion. I could easily be reading the replay wrong but that would be my inclination based on when he responded and subsequent diagnosis of strain (again, assuming Nunez used the Thompson test).

You don't think it's possible they' know what's up and just are saying strain pending MRI because the fight want to announce it being torn right away?
2579603, It's certainly possible
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Nov-29-16 10:51 PM
I'm going based off 2 assumptions: 1) Nunez knows the optimal manual test and 2)The info released so far is based off that test.
2579788, R calf strain
Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Nov-30-16 06:44 PM
Very similar to an Achilles strain bc the calf (could be gastrocs or soleus) essentially becomes the Achilles' tendon. The mechanism is almost surely dorsiflexion tension as I described above.

Moral of the story: Attention to detail matters, esp when it comes to diagnostics.
2579799, So what's the takeaway for him?
Posted by theeraser, Wed Nov-30-16 08:15 PM
2579800, For Nick?
Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Nov-30-16 08:41 PM
In general, you can't do much to prevent high impact acute force injuries, he landed in a high stress angle off a dynamic movement....it's an unfortunate series of events.

Going forward, I'd tell him to be really sensitive to *any* pain in that leg because the calf is a big force absorber along with plantar-flexor so pain somewhere else in the chain would very likely be indicative of compensation...which can lead to subsequent injury.
2579571, how very Asik of him to miss the buzzer beater layup
Posted by Wonderl33t, Tue Nov-29-16 09:02 PM
and yeah, bummer for Young. Hopefully it's not too bad.

2579576, Had a shitty feeling about this game all day
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Nov-29-16 09:19 PM
They've been playing much better since Jrue returned, we blew them out after AD went out last time, and they are coming off 2 pretty bad losses on the road. That combined with our win over ATL and our first long distance road game in over a week had me really nervous about the game. Kept telling myself I was just being overly pessimistic but we were asleep at the wheel in the first half with I'm sure some shell-shock from Nick going down...NOH was the aggressor, got wherever they wanted.
2579577, you know what I like about LeBron James nowadays
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Nov-29-16 09:25 PM
is that he can basically Rondo it out there, but more efficiently

taking less shots, but getting about 9 assists a game

this is a cool reversal of how he was early in his career when he was basically "the man"

he still is, but he's doing it way differently know
2579580, bron started inexplicably ball-hogging.
Posted by Basaglia, Tue Nov-29-16 09:46 PM
2579639, it's funny how I type that, and he went off his game
Posted by Dr Claw, Wed Nov-30-16 06:42 AM
and they catch a L

something wasn't right
2579668, From what I saw in the third quarter
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Nov-30-16 09:48 AM
the Bucks played stellar defense, did a good job off the glass, and didn't cough up the ball a ton, which helped to eliminate the open three pointers the Cavs normally feast on.

It looked like early in the fourth quarter the Cavs in general got frustrating and starting coughing up the ball carelessly; LeBron wasn't alone in playing sloppily last night.
2579579, Really sad...He's on a way-below-market contract right now, too

2579587, Did Sean Kilpatrick swap bodies with CP3?
Posted by MothershipConnection, Tue Nov-29-16 10:15 PM
Related, the last 3 games might be the worst I've ever seen CP3 play... the numbers look OK but he's making just bizarre errors for him, like fast break turnovers, losing his handle, not being anywhere close to hitting from midrange. He's seriously made some JV point guard errors out there that I'm not used to seeing.
2579589, What in the heck is going on in this BK/LAC game
Posted by MothershipConnection, Tue Nov-29-16 10:24 PM
Checked my phone on my way home and Clips were up 18, got home and it was damn near tied, Lopez is raining 3s and Sean Kilpatrick is apparently unstoppable, CP3 hits a 3 to send it to OT..... Clippers down again in OT and Doc gets thrown out the game, Nets miss 3 of 4 to seal the game, Crawford hits another 3 to send it to double OT...
2579595, CP3 has also made some huge plays down the stretch...
Posted by theeraser, Tue Nov-29-16 10:38 PM
2579599, He's been big in their wins
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Tue Nov-29-16 10:46 PM
When he attacks the basket he's a pretty good player. Whenever Jeremy finally gets back it'll be interesting to see them playing together getting the ball side to side and attacking

There were several times in the OTs though where they needed to get brook some post touches.
2579590, maaaaaaan wtf was Doc so mad about
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Nov-29-16 10:28 PM
he was about to kill that ref if he got loose
2579594, Mauer was about to be BODIED
Posted by MothershipConnection, Tue Nov-29-16 10:33 PM
I think they didn't want the foul and was misheard (at least according to the local broadcast) from all the way across the court on the first T and just lost it.
2579597, Doesn't matter if he wanted the foul though
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Tue Nov-29-16 10:44 PM
There was a foul in the play. Kirkpatrick got hit on the arm swinging through. That was a foul. It wasn't blown prematurely from what I saw.
2579605, Mauer called the T when he was talking to Holtkamp
Posted by MothershipConnection, Tue Nov-29-16 10:52 PM
Agreed the original foul was a foul but that's apparently what set up off to try and body Kenny Mauer (also Clippers completely deserved to lose that game).
2579612, Surprised that Choke-P didn't get a tech w/ Holtkamp in the building
Posted by FILF, Tue Nov-29-16 11:04 PM
2579613, i'm sure if he looked at her too sternly he'd get a T
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Nov-29-16 11:10 PM
2579606, i thought the same thing re: timing of the call
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Nov-29-16 10:53 PM
He swung through and got hit, then the foul was called.
2579598, Utah is really good...they can hang with anyone in the West playoffs

Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Tue Nov-29-16 10:52 PM
They're still not fully healthy either
2579610, They would be a scary team if Hood wasn't so inconsistent
Posted by FILF, Tue Nov-29-16 11:02 PM
When Favors is healthy, their starting 5 is the best defensive team in the league but they are a younger version of the Grizz who also stay getting injured.
2579615, And Hill and Diaw were perfect pick-ups...even Trey Lyles contributes
Posted by theeraser, Tue Nov-29-16 11:24 PM
2579631, Diaw has been terrible, dude might be done

2579607, Spurs should just play all their games on the road
Posted by FILF, Tue Nov-29-16 10:53 PM
The team essentially has been sleepwalking at home against every opponent while winning all 10 of their road games by least 5 points which is an NBA record.
2579609, Road blowouts highlight our need for a defensive identity
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Nov-29-16 10:56 PM
You're gonna have games, esp on the road, where you're out of your comfort zone and the shots aren't falling or things don't go your way....what allows you to stay in those games and mitigate some of those factors is being able to hang your hat on defense rather than allowing your effort and attitude to depend on the offensive flow. Until that happens, we will continue to suffer some of these road blowouts...thus far vs Minny and tonight vs NOH
2579611, Bizarro night, Spurs, Clips & Cavs all caught L's?
