2632739, he's appealing?
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Dec-04-17 04:05 PM
for why?

2632745, everyone appeals.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Dec-04-17 04:18 PM
2632747, Hope he gets more games
Posted by bentagain, Mon Dec-04-17 04:21 PM
Didn't watch the game

from the descriptions, I was expecting different

like the defender gave himself up, and Gronk was in pursuit, etc...

strange that none of the write ups mention the defender was actually out of bounds

Dude is on the ground
contacted
and out of bounds

...when Gronk goes Gronk...

If the NFL is going to suspend guys a game for live ball contact to the head

this has to be more, IMO.
2632752, LOL wat.
Posted by Brew, Mon Dec-04-17 04:28 PM
>RE: Hope he gets more games

Yea that makes sense.

"In an unprecedented move, after Gronkowski appealed his 1 game suspension, the NFL responded by tacking on an additional 3 games."
2632753, Play was over.

2632789, Nothing you're saying has anything to do with what I responded to.
Posted by Brew, Mon Dec-04-17 07:28 PM
But keep saying things that aren't relevant.
2632860, he deserved more games..
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Dec-05-17 10:19 AM
I hate fans who can't admit the obvious.

2632887, Jesus christ guys.
Posted by Brew, Tue Dec-05-17 12:21 PM
I was making fun of him for saying "I hope he gets more games" in response to a post about how he's appealing the 1 game suspension.
2632907, the hate is strong

2632750, Incentives in his contract- suspension should cost him millions
Posted by DJR, Mon Dec-04-17 04:25 PM
Or make it very likely he won’t hit the incentives.

Posted by rob, Mon Dec-04-17 06:53 PM
this is the worst part of sports journalism.

these dudes don't appeal because of the money. they appeal because the system is a farce and no one thinks it has anything to do with justice.
2632835, ??? Gronk missing a game makes him less likely...
Posted by DJR, Tue Dec-05-17 12:00 AM
to reach his games played and stats incentives. I’m thinking that’s part of the reasons for his appeal. That’s millions he’s not going to get.
2632854, or, because the system is a farce + the money
Posted by thejerseytornado, Tue Dec-05-17 08:47 AM
okayplayer: where the concept of "and" is deemed unnecessary nuance.
2632772, A game? Really?
Posted by bshelly, Mon Dec-04-17 05:43 PM
He shouldn’t have played again this year
2632773, he was frustrated about being held, though
Posted by will_5198, Mon Dec-04-17 05:54 PM
in fact, he's probably the first player in NFL history to ever be held

two wrongs don't make a right, but let's keep bringing up the holding so we can falsely equate the two (c) Patriots Nation
2632855, fuck any fan who defends that hit
Posted by thejerseytornado, Tue Dec-05-17 08:48 AM
but don't act like patriots fans are more likely to cape for their asshole player than other fanbases.

fwiw, most fans on the pats SB Nation site say the suspension was right (66%) and almost as many say it should be longer compared to shorter.

2632988, it's crazy how defensive holding has become a part of the narrative
Posted by will_5198, Tue Dec-05-17 11:44 PM
like literally, it's mentioned in every story about what happened.

"Everyone has a tipping point. Gronkowski, who clearly believes he is officiated more stringently because of his overpowering physicality, reached his Sunday. He was flagged for multiple penalties in the second half while the Bills relentlessly clutched and grabbed him without repercussions." -- Boston.com

"The Bills were not happy about a "dirty" hit from Rob Gronkowski" -- Boston Globe (play it as neutral and omit dirty or condemn it entirely...don't play the quotation marks game)

"Tom Brady can see why Rob Gronkowski gets so frustrated with officials" -- NESN

nevermind Scott Zolak's commentary in-game...

there's this real motivation to not label Gronkowski as a dirty player. it was holding, it was his first time, it was whatever. look at this damn post, people arguing suspension semantics and the old "well he's no Burfict" game.

when you do what Gronk did, you're a dirty fucking player. period.
2633001, show me a fan base and local media that doesn't do that after a dirty hit
Posted by thejerseytornado, Wed Dec-06-17 07:33 AM
Otherwise, why reply to me?

It's all bullshit. But there's nothing specific to the pats/pats fans of that bullshit.

where they taught us that being a little emotional is an excuse for excessive (and planned - football players don't do shit like that without deciding to do it) violence. it seems to be a pretty common justification.
2632786, Didn’t Vontaze Burfict get similar treatment
Posted by smutsboy, Mon Dec-04-17 06:57 PM
For similar terrible plays? It took him a while to get a multi game suspension?

NFL execs are racist as shit but this seems like their same old slap on the wrist bs
2632797, nah
Posted by rob, Mon Dec-04-17 08:05 PM
i'm not going to rationalize anything burfict's done, because he's done some shit. his approach to the game is decades out of date.

gronk wasn't even playing football for 30 secs there. and yes, it's racist as fuck. gronk's going to be in commercials and have media jobs when he retires. moms and kids wear his jerseys and will be wearing them next year. even people boycotting the nfl right now probably love him.

most people don't know who burfict is right now. even less will in 10 years. most who do in a decade will consider him a criminal and a thug.
2632807, Makes sense
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Mon Dec-04-17 09:43 PM
A guy who has repeatedly been caught doing dirty shit, over and over. And just this week STILL claims Antonio Brown was faking a concussion that made him miss a playoff game........is the same as a guy who had his first dirty play and immediately apologized.

Def racist. I see your point. Def racist.
2632812, i don't know why we need to compare the two at all
Posted by rob, Mon Dec-04-17 10:09 PM
gronk DOES have a fucking track record of disgusting behavior, he just never has to own it. it's always spun immediately as innocence on his part, and if there's a problem, it's society's fault for not excusing his boyish behavior.

which is why his "apology" is just him saying he's not the kind of guy who does the thing that he did. he's that guy.

let's pretend dez bryant did what gronk did yesterday and predict what would have happened to his endorsements.
2632816, Exactly, look at the original post. Now imagine a black guy doing that.
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Dec-04-17 10:23 PM
2633023, Gronk is just a bro doing bro things
Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Dec-06-17 10:51 AM
Thought you knew
2633027, What disgusting behavior though ?
Posted by Brew, Wed Dec-06-17 11:21 AM
>gronk DOES have a fucking track record of disgusting
>behavior, he just never has to own it. it's always spun
>immediately as innocence on his part, and if there's a
>problem, it's society's fault for not excusing his boyish
>behavior.

For the record, I am with you that there is a racial component here, and with any situation like this. So I'm not in the camp that naively believes that race doesn't play a part in how players are treated in the media and by the league in these types of situations.

With that said, I'm still curious what Gronk does/has done that, in your mind, is so disgusting ? I think Gronk gets preferable treatment by the media, like I said ... his hard-partying ways are treated a lot differently than the same type of activities are treated when the subject is a black player. There's no arguing that at all if you have a brain in your head.

But I don't think, beyond his admittedly atrocious, egregious display this past weekend, that he is a particularly "disgusting" or dirty person or player. He parties off the field and he plays hard on it. This is the first time I'd characterize his behavior as "disgusting." I may be forgetting another instance or two but I wouldn't characterize him, in general, as a dirty player or a truly *bad* person. So I'm curious what makes you characterize him as such, beyond just this one instance ?
2633093, lmao
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Dec-07-17 09:22 AM
2633103, I mean I wasn't asking you but you clearly don't have an answer.
Posted by Brew, Thu Dec-07-17 10:49 AM
If you do, spill it. Laughing doesn't help your case.
2633109, I definitely don't have the answers
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Dec-07-17 11:30 AM
I like seeing fans cape for their players. Especially Pats fans.
2633111, That's fine. Think my question was reasonable though.
Posted by Brew, Thu Dec-07-17 11:43 AM
Pats fan or not. I'm looking at it objectively. If anyone can provide me with more than this one example of Gronk being a "disgusting" person or player I'll humbly stand down. I just don't think it's there so I think that characterization of him in general is unfair.
2633113, on or off field?
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Dec-07-17 12:16 PM
2633114, I'm not gonna repeat myself man.
Posted by Brew, Thu Dec-07-17 12:17 PM
Read my post. Do you have examples or not.
2632901, The consequences are arguably more embarrassing
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Dec-05-17 01:43 PM
Than the actual actions. Until this type of stupid shit is met with severe consequences, it will continue to happen.

edit: Louis Riddick going the fuck in on NFL Live right now. Essentially that the NFL is solely handing out suspensions based on optics rather than actually trying to protect players - something we all already know but good to see someone talking about it.
2632917, good

2632915, JuJu just got a 1 game suspension for blocking Burfict too hard
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Dec-05-17 02:28 PM
and standing over him.

smh...
2632948, Iloka too...
Posted by bentagain, Tue Dec-05-17 05:20 PM
Like I said in the other post

Should be a huge difference between a live play hit to the head and a dead ball hit to the head.
2632989, Insane.
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Dec-05-17 11:58 PM
2633003, In your opinion was this better or worse than the ODB on Norman
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Dec-06-17 07:57 AM
helmet to helmet spearing at the end of the play that got him a 1 game suspension?

Lotta people think that ODB hit was just as bad. I'm not one of them but if we are talking about consistency, these are the most similar instances.
2633006, I think ODB could have got more than 1 game
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Dec-06-17 08:36 AM
The difference is we all watched Norman and ODB take cheap shots at each other.

ODB’s hit was terrrible tho. I’m all for 4 game suspensions that get reduced to 2. At least it would give the impression the NFL cares.

Putting H2H football plays on the same level as Gronk and ODB sets a bad precident
2633029, Same, IMO. Now, as has been pointed out, alot of times the suspensions
Posted by bentagain, Wed Dec-06-17 11:58 AM
appear to be based on the outcome instead of the action

if we're strictly talking about the acts

they are the same

play is over

and they head hunt.

there has to be a difference between that action

and a live play hit IMO

...if you recall, there was debate at the time as to why ODB's play wasn't punished more severely...

He should have been ejected from that game and had a multiple game suspension

it wasn't just that hit that happened in that game

I think he got 3 unnecessary roughness penalties before that helmet hit

we're talking about 2015...right?
2633035, Iloka’s suspension overturned. Fined 35 K

2633042, its for his rich history of transgressions.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Dec-06-17 01:58 PM
2633096, It doesn't matter, it was within 5 yards of the LOS, it was a legal hit...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Dec-07-17 09:26 AM
linebackers are actually coached to do that.
2633112, dont matter. like draymond and MWP he's lost the benefit of the doubt
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Dec-07-17 11:48 AM
2633040, not that the NFL has a coherent policy on anything but
Posted by smutsboy, Wed Dec-06-17 01:45 PM
do they take previous history into account?

For better or worse it is stated policy in the NHL that repeat offenders get stronger punishments.
2633090, Pretty sure they do
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Dec-07-17 08:41 AM
However, shit like the Gronk hit shouldn’t be treated as a first offense. I think his hit was so dirty you need to send a message to make sure it doesn’t happen again
