he had a winning record in 7 out 12 seasons
now he's an assistant at Indiana for 2 seasons? Wtf?
he only coached 2 franchises and made strong runs with both

My sense is that he's too 'strong-willed' for owners.
According to this article he had a good run in Portland, but didn't make enough progress. At least not to the front office's liking.

He was a pretty good head coach though. Helped build those Roy led Blazer teams to the playoffs. Won 50+ games twice.

I wouldn't rank him against any modern coach with a title, but he's definitely better than half of the coaches in the league.
He probably would have done well in Orlando. He was a defensive minded coach, but he's more accomplished in the NBA than Billy Donovan and a better fit than Karl in Sacramento.

I am surprised he hasn't gotten any long looks. He played a forward-thinking and fun game in Seattle. He had a lot of success in Portland, even when his teams were injured. I didn't think his firing was fair but I did get the reasoning. It would be cool if he ended up with the Kings job and just did a tour around the old Pacific Division.
