Another aspect to what you said is that in the NBA, outside of a few top tier coaches, most front offices will choose a player over a coach if rifts occur, so I think most players realize they have the power in a sense to ignore or tune out a head coach, which contributes to the shallow ego you are referring to.

Interesting that Zach Levine could possibly have an inflated ego to be willing to ignore a head coach since he's only a second or third year player and hasn't seen much success outside of the dunk contest if I'm not mistaken, but I'm not in the man's shoes, so what do I know?
