2278979, ARAB MONAAAAAAY! Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Dec-19-13 09:33 PM
All fun aside, UCLA should be very good next year. LaVine is gonna be a monster. Both teams will be better next year, honestly.
But if Sulaimon comes back to life and Jefferson keeps grabbing 7-8 boards a game and getting a couple of putbacks per game? Duke could end up scary this year. Even though stretches of the first half were rough, I can't emphasize enough just how much better the D has been since the Vermont fiasco. We were like 175th in KenPom's defensive efficiency after that game-- now we're up in the top 100 again, a mere 5 games later. Thornton's improved play on defense has been a huge part of that.
Still want better rebounding and more consistency in trying to break the zone... but more great steps forward for Duke here. A lot to learn from for UCLA as well-- I believe the Pac-12 will be the deepest conference in America.
Good game, Warren.

i have no problem with people comparing skillsets and physical resemblance. none. it's fine. all i said was pierce is a better comparison for how he plays.

You picked Pierce because you recognized that comparing Jabari to Carmelo was in conflict with your agenda
He's a lot more like Carmelo, and you know this
Maybe he'll be a hall of famer like Carmelo too?
Hehe
|
2279093, i picked pierce because he plays more like pierce Posted by Basaglia, Fri Dec-20-13 11:42 AM
and that's because jabari has the potential to put up the same kinda "floor game" stats (dimes, stls, blks) as pierce did in his prime. i have no problem with him looking like melo, because that's not how i compare players.

2279095, Lol....this is gonna be a never ending back and forth for 15 yrs. Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Fri Dec-20-13 11:49 AM

he wanna be a jabari fan and he should just be that instead of tryna make me care that people compare him to melo. i was a melo fan for 10 years, through all the fatness and early exits. then, i just got tired of him playing his way into shape and being gassed in the playoffs. it got old. i can't defend it anymore.

don't work that way

early exits? Like when he embarrassed himself losing, as a 4-seed, to a 5-seed? Bwhahahahahaahahahaha
Pierce ain't do nuffin till he had Hall of Famers...let's hope Jabari gets Hall of Famers everywhere
then, i just got tired of him playing his way into >shape and being gassed in the playoffs. it got old. i can't >defend it anymore.

2279096, Nah, its not about "looks." Its about game, and projections Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Dec-20-13 11:52 AM
>and that's because jabari has the potential to put up the same >kinda "floor game" stats (dimes, stls, blks) as pierce did in >his prime. i have no problem with him looking like melo, >because that's not how i compare players.
Pierce and Carmelo are both multiskilled gifted scorers at the 3, the difference being that Pierce operates a bit more on the perimeter (like a classic 3), while Carmelo operates a bit more in the post (like a power 3). Pierce can spare a 1 or 2 handling the ball. Carmelo can play stretch 4. Both Carmelo and Pierce, however, are outstanding ball handlers, good shooters, and have back-to-the-basket games (Pierce is a better 3pt shooter; Carmelo is a better post player, and the advantages in those areas are about equivalent).
Jabari's trends more like Carmelo, given his physicality, toughness and size. That's where the build comes in.
Jabari will get minutes as a stretch 4, and terrorize offenses that way, just like Carmelo won a scoring title playing out of position (as a legit 4) for half the season last year. That is in Jabari's game.
Carmelo is one of the great freshman LEADERS ever, and has scored high on that test by everyone who has ever been around him, including Kobe (he's Kobe's closet NBA friend) and K (who lauded Carmelo's willingness to serve as a banger in the 2008 games, and come off the bench in the 2012 games).
Jabari has been lauded for his leadership.
Its a dead ringer in body type. Its a dead ringer in skill set.
Its a dead ringer in future projection. If Jabari is lucky.

2279134, Jabari can play 1-4 though, and is a great shooter and passer. Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Fri Dec-20-13 02:09 PM
Melo was not adept with range like Jabari or as good as a passer.
He's also not as good as a ball handler as Jabari is.
|
2279137, He's a very clear blend of the two, really. Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Dec-20-13 02:14 PM
I've never gotten the whole war of "who he's most like," because there are obvious, obvious elements of both.
You can't say he's "more like" one or the other without flagrantly ignoring some very key parts of Jabari's game that match up better with the other.

Lol
Carmelo's strength has always been his mid range game, which is better than Jabari's at the same stage
>He's also not as good as a ball handler as Jabari is.
LOL -- Pringles is one of the most dribble-heavy PG reliant coaches in the world, and he gave Carmelo the reigns at point guard, lauded his court vision and handling

Range. You missed that part.

So instead of relying on actual game footage or facts, you're relying on what a failed coach did on a team that didn't have a pg? And let me also add again that it failed. In case you missed that part.
Seriously?

Bwahahahahhahahahahaah
Stupid ass nigga, Jabari isn't playing PG on any decent team at any time in the NBA, ever
He's going to be a power 3 who can spell some minutes as a stretch 4 and cause matchup problems...like Carmelo...mad?
And Lots of guys CAN handle the ball and pass and by proxy serve as a point guard
Only real point guards play point guard on good teams
Hell, Lebron might be one of the 3 best pure PASSERS in the league and barely plays the point anymore (not even close to as much as he did with Cleveland on a BUM ass team)
So not sure what in blue fuck you're even arguing-
Jabari has a large skill set. Very similar to Carmelo's at the same stage. He has Carmelo's body type. And height. And smoothness. And skills. He's Carmelo 2.0 if he's lucky.

2278985, We're really pretty bad at the whole rebounding/defense/halfcourt O thing Posted by MothershipConnection, Thu Dec-19-13 09:49 PM
We can absolutely score points in bunches when we get on the run, like what happened when we made that run in the 1st half, but so far from this squad it's almost like a bizzaro Howland where we look completely incompetent on the defensive boards or stopping anyone at the rim or running a set play at times. Pretty done with the Wears at this point, Imma give Alford a chance with the bigs he recruited next year, but as for this year I think we'll be a competitive opponent in the Pac-12 and not much more. I don't see how we make much of a long run in the tourney if we keep running our current rotation of bigs out there.
As for your Dukies, y'all good, tons of talent, plenty of inconsistency, and they really tightened the screws in the 2nd half. K pretty much seems he's almost in Popovich mode where he just wants to get them ready by the 2nd half and tourney time.
(Sorry for not getting back to you BTW, I've been super super busy lately w/work and music and you probably woulda been wyling out in the 2nd half anyway... happy holidays out there)

I think I saw the 1, I remember Toby Bailey going up for a 360 layup on a fastbreak (that was at the height of my, I wanna play just like Toby Bailey phase), but then again I think that was the year K sat out.

THIS season than Duke..
UClA is a young team..playing basiclly it's 2nd road game of the season...
as THIS season progresses.... and Alford gets a feel for how his minutes and rotations are going to hash out.... this UCLA team is going to be more than solid...

2279185, Terrific in-depth analysis, lol. Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Dec-20-13 04:09 PM
What's funny is UCLA's problems (defense, rebounding, youth at key leadership spots) are also Duke's problems.
But that would be saying Duke and UCLA are similar. Which something tells me you won't ever admit, regardless of how true it is.
Funny how this sucky school beats UCLA consistently too. Weird.
