Bowling with a hook will def increase your chances of striking more consistently. It also takes a lot of practice to master. I bowled for years as a straight bowler (@140 avg) but my boys all had their own gear and were in leagues which motivated me to get serious.

So I'd say get your own ball...Balls at your local pro shop are designed to hook..the ball does all the work you just have to learn to control it. If you are a beginner you can get a low-end ball likely in the low $100's. It will be a good beginner ball because it will be easier to learn with. The ball will also be drilled perfectly for your hands as well.

From there its all about practice...Once I got my ball we were bowling 4/5 x a week. It was an obsession lol. Slowly but surely you will get better though.
