2133663, All this Reggie Bush to the Lions talk
Posted by C. Thelonius, Mon Feb-18-13 09:21 PM
I'm too lazy to swipe anything, but Detroit sports media has been buzzing about this recently, because Nate Burleson has made a public plea (other players too I think) to come to the Lions and apparently Stafford started following Bush on Twitter. My gut instinct is telling me no, but he'd be a def upgrade to replace Jahvid Best and, if healthy, paired with Leshoure for short yardage/power running, the two could be a real powerful duo. But of course, I'm saying all this without talking about the money and how much Bush would cost. Thoughts?

Bush was great with Miami. He was a beast, but once their aerial game took off, they stopped using him. It's a shame, because he was the best RB in the league for the last half of the season in his first year with the Dolphins. At the beginning of last season, he was a stud, but then the jets intentionally injured him, and he had to sit awhile....that's when the dolphins went to the air more.

Give reggie 20 touches and he will get you 100 yards. Give him less than that and he won't give you 100 yards. The more touches he gets the better he runs.....But the current Miami coach didn't understand that, and remember bush was Sparano's guy, so the current coach does not care for him too much.

However, I don't think bush would have success in Detroit. why? It's simple. The lions play on turf. Bush is a natural grass runner, and his legs cannot deal with a turf surface. that is why he was injury prone in NO and couldn't stay on the field.

I'm pretty sure bush understands that.....

this would not make for a good marriage.
2133745, an interesting theory...

Any team interested in Bush has to be concerned about his injury history. It sounds like Bush would love to play on grass.

“I would attribute a lot of to field turf. There is a big difference between grass and turf,” Bush said.

Was healthy as fuck for the dolphins until the jets INTENTIONALLY went in on him

2133786, No thank you.

Too old, and has too much wear and tear.

That secondary should be the most pressing concern right now.

too old?

he is 27 ...still in his prime...

RB starts to decline at the age of 30....Plus most of his injuries were open field injuries, not from taking big hits....

he needs to stay on grass, though. No way can he play on turf every week and not break down. His body isn't built for it.

This would be huge, and it makes sense for the team and the player. I think Reggie could do so much more with 15 touches in this offense than he could with 20+ in Arizona. And really, we just have too many damn holes to fill in the draft. Using a 3rd or 5th round pick on a hybrid speedy RB/WR would have been one less player we got for the defense.
2145678, Tell me about it!

Sounds like we're losing Delmas, Durant, Avril, might lose Houston, Gosder, is Backus coming back? And we already had holes that needed to be filled...
2145690, Guessing out of those names only Houston and Backus come back.

>holes that needed to be filled...

Starting to think we're filling DE with a mid-level free agent (Jason Jones, William Hayes) and a combo of LoJack and Willie Young Sr. Durant is replaced by Ashlee Palmer, who will get pushed in camp by the cubs we picked up last year (Whitehead and Lewis). I'll be shocked if we don't draft a safety in the first 3 rounds, to replace Delmas. Probably need to get used to the idea of Carney and Spievey seeing a lot of time next season. If you've learned to live with an STD, I imagine it's a very similar experience.

I would expect the pick at #5 to be whoever Mayhew and Co. deem the best available out of Joeckel, Fisher, Milliner, Jarvis Jones.

Stafford HAS to be restructuring his deal, if all this talk about Bush, Goldson, Hayes etc. is based in reality. There could be a chance the Lions have more cap room than any of us think...

Posted by rjc27, Tue Mar-12-13 10:34 AM
Lions running game was putrid, missed Best badly last year, Reggie is a great receiver out of the backfield, and unlike his 2 draft counterparts Vince Young and Matt Leinart, has continually improved throughout his career and has improved every offseason... I'm sure this post will be upped the first he shreds GB's swiss cheese run d for a buck 50
2145703, It's not, at all (assuming they don't pay too much)
Posted by Jayson Willyams, Tue Mar-12-13 10:48 AM
This year's draft is deep at DE and safety, so they're going to continue to build the defense through the draft. Fans act like we didn't draft 6 straight CBs and LBs last year. The mantra has been younger, bigger, faster all along, and this is a great year to hit those notes at positions of need.

Reggie is a pro and will slot into an offense that is tailor-made for someone with his skill set. I don't think signing him will prevent us picking up any defensive starters. We can't know that yet, though, so people are understandably dubious. I, for one, think our cap situation is probably better than anyone thinks--they may be in talks with Stafford or Suh to restructure already, and likely have a few "In case of emergency, break glass" cuts lined up (Mike Thomas, Scheffler, maybe even Backus, praise be to Mayhew).
2145704, What makes you think they wont pay too much?

I don't even need to know the dollars. We faced more 5- and 6-man fronts than any other offense in the league last year. The offense was broken without a guy with this skillset. We needed him, we got him.

edit: that seems excessively mad, my bad. But still. We went 50 years without a QB, and you want to trade him and pick up a guy the Bills cut?

But you are the template for every complacent lions fan. While you've been waiting for a QB, I've been waiting for a Super Bowl*. Guess you win though.

I promise I'm not, but that's a fair dig considering my post. I read Lions boards (because I hate myself) and see people earnestly arguing to trade Stafford and Suh. "NE1 think we can get 6 first round picks 4 Calvin??!?", shit like that. Like the entire fanbase is playing franchise mode on Madden 03. I'm...touchy.

>We HAVE. GOT. TO. GET. A. DEFENSE.

They're working on it? Jason Jones came in today, and I think Grover Quinn is the next signing. I bet we'll see something similar to last year's draft, when 6 straight picks went to the back 7. Only difference is (hopefully) we get a playmaker in the first, instead of waiting till the 3rd. Milliner in the first, Carradine in the second...a man can dream.

Point being, with Suh (and possibly Stafford) restructuring, I don't think signing Reggie will keep them from doing anything they want on the defensive side of the ball. It looked like it was a zero-sum game at this point last week, but the landscape is different now.

AND all of our weapons on offense were running at like 70% capacity without a back like Best or Bush. We're going to put a lot more TDs on the board next year.

I'm a huge reggie bush fan, and this is a great pickup for the lions on paper. However, the cardinals would have been a better fit for him considering they play on grass.

I hope his body can hold up playing on turf. He was a healthy, active rb for the dolphins, and I believe that was due to him playing on grass.

He is 28,with low mileage, so 4 years was a solid deal.

For football reasons, Reggie won't find a better fit in the NFL than Detroit. For reasons of an autistic savant role playing as Dr. James Andrews in his D&D league, well, then you might have a point.

bush even blamed field turf for his injuries..

I'm rooting for him, but a good fit does not always mean good health. Bush playing for a team who plays on turf, and playing in a conference where another team(vikings) plays most of its games on turf, makes me a little bit nervous. 3/4 of his games are going to be played on turf....

I really want to be optimistic about this.
