2123014, it's amazing how shady the NFL was in handling this
Posted by rjc27, Thu Jan-31-13 10:04 AM
destroying the tapes can only lead to assumptions that this was significant stuff...

I see Chris Weinke was speaking on this talking about a game the season the Pats beat the Panthers in the SB where Otis Smith and Ty Law both had pick 6's in the same game on plays they sniffed out immediately... the cheating definitely helped

No doubt about it, Otis Smith was a bum but he looked like a HOFer in that game
2123029, not only that, but Payton gets a 1-yr ban for Bountygate
Posted by celery77, Thu Jan-31-13 10:31 AM
Belicheck allegedly breaking the rules to gain unknown advantages in close games, including the Super Bowl? I don't think he even served a sideline ban, did he?

AND

he came back with that insanely snakeish "well we just have a different interpretation of the rules" or some shit, even though it was a former assistant of his that ended up being the whistle blower cuz NO SHIT they were gaining an advantage.

so yeah, who knows how many millions in Vegas might have swung on Belicheck cheating over multiple years -- that's a speeding ticket. But Sean Payton allegedly presiding over a practice -- incentivizing hurting your opponent -- that is ingrained into the fabric of the game, THAT gets Sean Payton a one year ban.

yeah, Spygate is some of the biggest bullshit I've ever seen perpetrated by a major sports league, good on Marshall Faulk for continuing to speak about it.
2123031, wasn't the punishment the highest ever before bountygate?
Posted by cereffusion, Thu Jan-31-13 10:36 AM
That's how we know it was hardcore. The saints shit is more about lawsuits.
2123039, it was a loss of a 1st rd draft pick, which yeah I think was a precedent
Posted by celery77, Thu Jan-31-13 10:42 AM
and maybe something like a big fine?

and yeah, that was how the commish defended it -- "biggest punishment ever" -- which *was* basically saying "this isn't a joke."

but Belicheck laughed right through it with that "we have a different interpretation of the rules" fucking bullshit. at least Payton has been man enough to accept that as a head coach he has a responsibility to keep his team compliant with league rules. Bill Belicheck, on the other hand, is a disgrace to manhood in general.

2123097, the destroying of the tapes will always lead to suspicion of guilt
Posted by bentagain, Thu Jan-31-13 12:07 PM
especially in the information age

Rog knew that those tapes would eventually leak

and be seen somewhere

definitely more to it than just, "it was consistent with the teams' statement"

c'mon

the tape would have proved, if it indeed didn't show anything

NE's innocence

why destroy it?

and to post #5

that's what really struck me about Spygate

they were penalized players

they took draft picks away from this team

I'm not sure you can penalize a team more

than to take players away from them

it all looks like they cheated
2123087, yeah its amazing how much it was swept under the rug
Posted by JAESCOTT777, Thu Jan-31-13 11:48 AM
that game always bothered me

2123100, Demarco Farr was talking about this yesterday on the radio.
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Jan-31-13 12:08 PM
He said Mike Martz came up with all these offensive plays JUST for the Super Bowl. The first time they practiced them was at the walk-through. So for Belichek to start checking down his defense to plays he'd never seen before...he's either truly a genius, or...

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200111180nwe.htm

Turnovers and the Pats couldn't make a stop at the end of the game.

2123628, and a fun fact about that...
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Feb-01-13 09:43 AM
after that game you referenced...Kurt said Martz told them in the locker room.."that was a Super Bowl team you guys just played"
2123597, Because there are different degrees of cheating
Posted by LA2Philly, Fri Feb-01-13 02:30 AM
But each still gives you an advantage...which could be really important in say, a close 3 point game.

Taping a walk-through isn't a game genie code but it still gleams you an advantage you wouldn't have had otherwise. Faulk's comments about the red zone plays and the check down for a play that had never been seen before is pretty damn telling.
2123598, Goodell's obviously bs'ing and knew they might leak..so destroy em
Posted by LA2Philly, Fri Feb-01-13 02:33 AM
For the NFL, it's still better to have speculation about what is on the tape rather than actual proof of cheating. He knew the absolute shitstorm that they would cause, unlike anything seen before considering the stage, so he destroys them...and then all anyone has is reasonable inference and not fact.

It's such bs
2123599, Pats had check downs for plays NEVER RAN OR PRACTICED
