I know the common thought at the time was that he might have been gay. I feel like I thought that (think I searched these threads to see and I was cringing at I do at many old takes on here). But it definitely highlights his naivety and puts it into perspective why - and cultural nuance was not something we really thought as much about as we should have 10 years ago - not to mention the fact that "catfishing" as a concept was somewhat new and not all that mainstream. The Catfish movie came out in 2010 and the show (which REALLY pushed that into the mainstream) came out in late 2012...2 months before Manti's grandmother passed.
