We know the end of the movie, so it's all good IN HINDSIGHT to ask why he ain't this or that. He accepted shit at face value until it was obvious he couldn't.

It's a picture of her sister at a funeral. What about that couldn't he take at face value? Why would he say, 'nah I need to see that gravestone or I ain't buying it.'?
