733621, The Umbrella Academy (Netflix)
Posted by josephmurf2384, Sun Feb-17-19 05:12 AM
i am not too familiar with the source material, but i started watching this today. About 5 episodes in and i am digging it. Reminds me kind of Watchmen. Anyone else checking this out?
733623, An interesting mixed bag

There is a lot I really liked about this. The performances range from good to excellent with rare exception (Adult Ben is trash), the production design is insane, and it's fucking cool and weird and dopey in mostly the right amounts.

Unfortunately I checked in and out because despite a 10 episode order it feels overlong and suffers from some of the weaknesses of the weaker seasons of CW shows. Also, the needle drops range from 'oh, cool' to 'oh god again'.

It's a show that wears its references on its sleeves and that's fine with me as it bends them enough to make them unique or interesting more often than not. There are even some weird ones like two very direct/obvious Cormac McCarthy references.

As the OP says, its very reminiscent of Watchmen but without the weight or self-importance. Instead of being about the nature of superheros and fascism and shit it's about family and being different and failure.

Shoutout to WETA for Pogo it's crazy to see that level of SFX in a 'TV' show.

I'm not waiting with baby's breadth but I do hope this gets a second season
733781, is this an escape goat-type reference?
Posted by benny, Thu Feb-28-19 11:35 AM

>I'm not waiting with baby's breadth
733784, old okp reference
Posted by navajo joe, Thu Feb-28-19 01:02 PM
is escape goat some shit an okp said? cuz if so, then yes
733800, I seem to recall an NBA player saying something about an escape goat
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri Mar-01-19 12:39 AM
And we latched onto it as a punchline

For some reason I associate this with Tracy McGrady, but I very we could be wrong about that.

Either way, it's a longstanding OKS reference
733624, Haven’t watched it yet, but I really enjoyed the comic.
Posted by mrhood75, Sun Feb-17-19 11:28 AM
Plan on checking it out.
733630, started this, so far i like it
Posted by mista k5, Mon Feb-18-19 10:28 AM
the music is cool

entertaining, 1hr long episodes??? they dont drag at all so far but it is quite a bit of a commitment.
733641, Finished it. It was a fun ride w/ some unnecessary dialog at times.

733650, Another result Gerard Way is the shit

733678, When does Mary J Blige show.
Posted by Castro, Wed Feb-20-19 04:51 PM
That is literally the only reason I will continue with this.
733680, She's almost in every episode n/m
Posted by IslaSoul, Wed Feb-20-19 05:07 PM
733686, i didn't like the first episode
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Thu Feb-21-19 11:03 AM
seems too cheesy
733723, it was mostly good
Posted by mista k5, Mon Feb-25-19 10:53 AM
i think the last two episodes lost me a bit but overall it was good.

the cabin scene got to me. havent had a "oh snap" moment like that in a while.
733746, Might fuck around and be the best X-Men content we get this year
Posted by JFrost1117, Tue Feb-26-19 09:03 AM
I liked the opposing characters, but I hesitate to call them villains. Not knowing anything about the comic series, I didn't expect them to go Dark Phoenix with Vanya on episode 1, but it was clear when she first displayed her powers.
733785, After watching S2 of Punisher
Posted by navajo joe, Thu Feb-28-19 01:08 PM
I like this even more.
733795, It's a great pallete cleanser
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu Feb-28-19 04:30 PM
733797, both in terms of tone and quality
Posted by navajo joe, Thu Feb-28-19 04:49 PM
733803, you didn't like S2 of Punisher?
Posted by BigWorm, Fri Mar-01-19 10:38 AM
Just wondering, I haven't really talked to anyone about it.

Not arguing. I liked it a lot personally. Like Luke Cage S2 seeing Luke transform into...well, what he became, I liked how Bernthal's Punisher developed.

S1 seemed to be about him fighting his blood thirst and PTSD over what he did in the military and what happened to his family. It seemed to end optimistically. But then S2 had him embracing that dark side and finally becoming a villain with his warped morality that just happens to be killing other villains. The story was all over the place but I really appreciated that transition. It's like after he finally pops Jigsaw, all that's left of him is the killing machine.

Anyway, just my thoughts. If Umbrella Academy is better I definitely want to give it a watch.
733805, To not derail this thread i'll hit you back in the S2 Punisher thread

As far as Umbrella Academy, I don't know if you should go into it from the 'that nigga said it's better than Punisher' perspective but, I do think that it is superior on most accounts in terms of acting, world-building, pacing, and production.

Is it flawed? OH YEAH. Is it overlong and suffer from periods of aimlessness? I mean it IS still a Netflix show. While there are a couple of great elements in Punisher (Berenthal, John Pilgrim, and that sequence in the bar in episode 1) the fact that the show makes so many terrible missteps in terms of storytelling and execution kills me.

Might be a question of expectations on my end so YMMV w/ Umbrella Academy

739661, This show is awful - and I watched it all (well to S2 Ep 8 so far)

There's a character they know that can travel through time.

He arrives and warns of an impending apocalypse.

Every other characters says "I need to go do my own thing somewhere spatially different and reflect on my bad childhood."

They do this over and over.

Then the world DOES end, they jump back in time - but they get separated.

Then:

They do this over and over.

The ONLY time it made a little sense is the opening of season 2 when they are simply X-Men for about 45 seconds.

I'll finish it today.

739662, I definitely hate watched season 2
Posted by CherNic, Tue Oct-20-20 10:35 AM
Season 1 was bad but season 2 almost made me upset lol. They will not get another season out of me
739678, lol
Posted by mista k5, Thu Oct-22-20 11:57 AM
i thought this was upped because season 3 was out. i was thinking, man im done with this show. i think after season 2 i thought it was fine. might watch another one. now that time has passed i dont think i would watch another season.

739665, I don't know how you made it into season 2
Posted by Castro, Tue Oct-20-20 04:16 PM
By the end of season 1, I wanted their version of the world to end.
739667, I'm bored - I'm watching a lot of bad stuff
Posted by handle, Tue Oct-20-20 07:26 PM
I have a hard drive filled with classic movies and I'll watch this instead.

I dunno why.
739668, I was interested to see how Mary J would do....
Posted by Castro, Wed Oct-21-20 01:33 AM
I don't know how you make everyone unlikeable.
739680, I thought 5 was likable
Posted by handle, Thu Oct-22-20 12:26 PM
>I don't know how you make everyone unlikable.

Well the young looking 5. His older self seemed stupider than him.he had motivations I could understand: 1)he did something stupid. 2)He wanted to un-do it. 3)He loved his family.

Luther is so strong - and yet get's his ass kicked EVERY-TIME.

Diego can not only curve knives he can push a way bullets? So he's telekinetic, but they just don't lean into it?

Why was Diego so happy to see Ben - didn't he see octopus Ben trimming up those dudes at the end of season 1??

Everyone is boring - NONE of them seem interested in time travel or going back to their timeline at all.

What kind of reverse makeup did they do on Vanya to make Ellen Page look so plain?

Fish-head dude is in all the poster frames and yet does almost nothing.

Herb plays Pogo in a mo-cap suit.

Somewhere in here and Doom Patrol (DC) and The Flash (DC) and Legion (FX) and The Tick (Amazon) - they're close to getting a super hero team that I want to watch.

But in all the previously mentioned shows they lean so , so,so hard into unhappiness that it's not fun to watch a lot of the time.

Maybe I'll watch The Boys next.
745157, He is my favorite.

745142, So, I guess it’s over?
Posted by JFrost1117, Mon Jul-11-22 12:12 PM
With how this season ends, I guess all the threads are wrapped up. And, there are no more books to follow.
745143, not quite

spoilers........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

There's the obvious quest to regain their powers. The WHY is Dad's face on everything here? plotline not to mention the whole, Our dad's an alien who just tried to kill us in order to bring back a dead wife that NONE OF US KNEW ABOUT.

Lol, I don't see how you think it's over.
745146, They all scattered to the wind with no sense of urgency.
Posted by JFrost1117, Mon Jul-11-22 09:37 PM

>Lol, I don't see how you think it's over.

Allison is satisfied, but I don’t think she knows she doesn’t have powers.
745151, Huh? That ending is brimming with urgency. SPOILERS
Posted by Cold Truth, Tue Jul-12-22 12:18 AM
I think you missed some things, or you’re seriously overlooking the obvious.

>Allison is satisfied, but I don’t think she knows she
>doesn’t have powers.

That’s because there’s a good chance she never lost them. She wasn’t standing on any of the “bells”. Her power wasn’t sucked out like the rest. Their power was used to fuel the universe “reboot” or whatever, but there’s no indication hers was lost in the process.

Sure, she has her life back- but that’s another reason for tension in S4, and sets her up as a secondary antagonist. She still has her powers, and she got her family back. She’s the ONLY one who’s life even resembles what they had when the show began.

Sure, Victor is back to square one, but that’s after losing the power she regained after Reginald suppressed it from him- and now Reginald has taken it again, but this time, he took them completely.

Conversely, Rumor got back everything she had, and then lost. Which means she’ll be highly motivated to stop the UA from doing anything to change the status quo.

Moreover, Luther is hellbent on finding Sloane, Clause is following him, and Ben was yelling about how to get their powers back.

Five will remember the words of his future self- as The Director- telling him not to save the world, which was something he was already weighing at the end of this one.

We see this world’s version of Ben in the last shot, hinting that their other selves are present in this new reality.

And not only is this new reality seemingly run by Reginald, his wife has been ressurected.

The hook of the song at the end says “this ain’t no place for no hero to call home”.

Whatever this new reality is, it isn’t home.

Every second of that epilogue for S3 screams urgency, and does more to sets up S4 than any other season has set up the next. It was the complete opposite of an ending.

It very well could be the end, but that would be due to Netflix’s fickle tendency to cancel shows after 2-3 seasons.

Sure, they wrapped up several threads, but not all of them, and several new ones were introduced. But not a single thing about that ending suggests this story is over.
745150, Nah, we knew about that. SPOILERS
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Jul-11-22 11:51 PM
We saw the wife on her deathbed in season one, when he released those lights

But yeah, the quest to regain their powers while learning what happened in this new reality is an obvious S4 plot. Plus, I think Rumor still has hers, and I think their powered dopplegangers still exist.
