Slow start & unexpected ending but enough intrigue along the way to enjoy it

Usually like my dark comedies paced a little better but the performances made up for the weird tone shifts

Solid Western & pretty cool to see JCR in a role like this...steals quite a few scenes form Joaquin

Kinda reminded me of an earlier Hell or High Water

it's not his best by any means but he knocked it out of the park IMO. Really helped by the acting (Phoenix plays the violent bully with his usual flair, Reilly is luminous, and I dug the way Amed showed his character's introverted but resounding faith. Gyllenhaal's choices were more...peculiar), and with some great cinematography, of which the nighttime shootouts shot wide were a real highlight I thought.
Westerns are tough since everything about them had been done/said, but I found this to be a worthwhile addition to the genre, without being too in debt to its predecessors

Yeah Jake seemed a little odd/off in this. Curious if that's how his character comes off in the book too.

Loved those too & that one scene w/ Joaquin & the all black background

Agreed, I recommend it to fans of the genre w/ a few reservations...I thought this lady sitting at the end of my row was going to lose her shit over a couple scenes

took a while for the two leads to really hit a groove.. dialog and acting started rough for pros like that imo.. but it came together nicely. I really want to ponder the themes more and I feel I need to rewatch it as there are going to be all kinds of things missed on first viewing I think.. I enjoyed it. I got a feeling I will enjoy it more... lol that fricking spider heebus jeebus!

only saw the after effect & think I made the right decision

the after effect was what capped it but yeah I don't mess with spiders so that whole bit had me..

I really am curious about the whole family and utopia aspects.. and I'm sure on second viewing I'm going to go off on it..

Like most books I forget everything sans main plot point after like 3 months but one thing that always stuck with me is one of the brothers really getting into this new invention called toothpaste. Did they use that in the movie?

but I'm not sure if they play on it as much as it is inthe book... didn't read the book... kind of wish I had.
