ok, i know this is a rocky film and all, but how are they going to explain the very apparent size difference between the two? they look 2 to 3 weight classes apart. Or are we supposed to believe creed is big enough for them to be fighting in the unlimited class? nah.

732659, Why do I feel so invested in this movie?
Posted by BigWorm, Tue Nov-20-18 03:46 PM
The first was the only boxing movies to legit have me tearing up at the end.

I really, really don't want a Creed II, III, IV and V. I don't. I just want this one to be a good finish to a story arc and not just a cash grab.

I don't know why but I'm over here like don't let me down, MBJ. Like we were high school friends.

Don't lump this into the "Rocky" franchise..this didn't feel like a Rocky movie at all...and I'm good with that. If Adonis is gonna start his own journey, then it needs to be HIS journey, and they make that point a few times in the movie.

It just...doesnt flow well. Alot of the dialouge seems forced. I didn't really care that certain things were happening, because I wasn't sucked in enough to really care..if something good or bad happened, there was really no connection built.

The actors all did their thing though...and theres some really cool cameos in it. Did'nt dig the music too much either. It wasnt a bad movie...just wasnt as good as I hoped it would be.

I'll lower my expectation.

My one question is though: does it complete the story arc? Or does it leave room for Creed III, IV, etc?

732670, RE: that's a shame
Posted by tully_blanchard, Wed Nov-21-18 01:12 PM
Umm...

There was a moment where I thought that this could be the end of it all, but nah.The door is wide open for Creed III...anything beyond that I just can't see..unless "Flubber" Lang comes out of the wood work.

Anything beyond III I just don't see happening though.

I caught myself cringing and rolling my eyes.

There was a celebratory moment that quickly turned into a big deal.
I kept thinking, 'why is this an issuel?'

732675, Have you watched Creed recently?
Posted by LA2Philly, Thu Nov-22-18 02:36 AM
Asking bc I haven’t in a minute, couldn’t recall some of the character details, and did feel somewhat detached through the first 20ish minutes. That being said, I thought it built pretty well and the 2nd half really earned the emotional connection.
732693, You fell asleep 30 minutes in

Uh.

There are actually Rocky movies that don't feel like Rocky movies.

'Creed' was good specifically because it fleshed out
an entire character.

BOTH Creed DID take place within the Rocky *universe* though

Creed 2 especially; very firmly had the family themes that
are so central

And Bianca got MORE time and development in 2

You wilin

You have the attention span of a fourth grader

The first half had some jerky moments but the second was
masterful, exciting, moving, the whole 9

732689, Excellent overall. First half was solid. Second half was fantastic.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Nov-23-18 07:48 PM
The only reason you don't like this film is if you have
the attention span of a 4th grader. The film had some
storytelling hurdles but bumpily landed them in the first
half, and then delivered a VERY nice story in the second
half.

732695, This movie was solid. I'd see it again
Posted by spenzalii, Sat Nov-24-18 11:51 PM
Is it as good as the first? No. But that's as much a testament to how unexpectedly good the first Creed was. The story (a mix of II and IV) isn't quite as well laid out. The fights didn't have the same visual pop as the first (no long unbroken shots, though I'm not as mad at that stylistic choice. The punches still looked and felt brutal). The probably could have done more with the Drago clan, but they did enough for you to get the point. Still, the interplay between Rocky, Adonis and Bianca still works very well, which drove the first movie. Extraneous or underdeveloped plot points aside (all depending on your viewpoint) those characters carry the movie to its satisfying finish. While i'd welcome another installment, I'd be just as good with the series ending here (only thing that would make sense is if Rocky dies in the next one, which I don't want to see).

Avon and Claire get a little more screen time, which was nice. Sly is a much better actor than I gave him credit for too
732696, I wouldn't mind seeing a third film but....
Posted by rorschach, Sun Nov-25-18 02:22 AM
Adonis's story has essentially been told. Avenging Apollo's loss/death to Drago was the layup storyline that I expected to see in this film when I finished watching the first Creed film.

If there's a third film, I'm hoping the writers find a way to make a film that somehow can pack the power of the Rocky films without having to really rely on the formula of those films.

732698, All involved should be proud of this.

Steven Caple Jr. did an incredible job with this film. The pacing and attention to detail in this film were really well done.

This is a film you could tell that everyone was on the same page. They managed to tell a story that could have easily been over the top and cliche'd to the point of eye rolling and made it engaging and interesting in a few ways that are unexpected.

I'm pretty shocked at the so so reviews I'm seeing for this. I thought it was one of the best films of the year. It gets you invested in the characters regarding the main storyline but takes the times to explore side stories with supporting characters that are there because of that main storyline and it is all fluid.

The boxing scenes in the film aren't shot as aggressively as the first film but the style that Caple went with in this fits this film more because I think doing long shots makes the fight more intense in some ways.

It's good to see another young black director hit the ground running and I'm excited to see where he goes from here.

I also think there's more stories to tell for the Creed franchise as well.
732704, Loved it. Not as much as the first, but still a great movie.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Nov-25-18 12:35 PM
Still deals with the same male-centric themes of other Rocky movies, but in a different way.
732705, Did Stallone write this one?

732707, It's not Creed good but it is damn good (semi-spoilers)
Posted by navajo joe, Sun Nov-25-18 05:26 PM
I got literal chills during Adonis' entrance for the climactic fight.

One of the things I really enjoyed about the first film was the long/single-take fight scenes and nothing here is on that level. Baby Drago's physical formidability goes a long way though. At the end of the day, Caple made a very good film but Coogler is just operating on different level from almost anyone else today.

Something that struck me during the film, is just how wonderful a couple Adonis and Bianca are. These films have some of the best depictions of black love in recent cinema. The proposal scene, the pregnancy test and the hearing test scenes were such rich beautiful moments. I could watch Jordan/Thompson in these movies (or any movies) until the end of time.

The opening in Ukraine also gave me chills realizing that I was watching a Hollywood film with Dolph Lundgren a lead role in an actual movie theater.

I got pretty much everything I was looking for from this.
732772, Worst of the training montages
Posted by xangeluvr, Sat Dec-01-18 06:22 PM
Definitely not as good as the first. I personally didn't connect with its emotional beats. The training montage was the worst of all the Rockies I think and didn't get me hyped at all.

6/10
732778, Fully agree on this. Considering how iconic 4's training montage
Posted by navajo joe, Sun Dec-02-18 01:04 PM
is it's kind of mindboggling they made this one feel so slight. Hell considering how great the training montage in Creed is it sucks they fell so short. Didn't ruin anything for me, don't think it is necessarily lesser film but could have propelled this to a level closer to Creed.

I still really enjoyed the film and think there is a ton of great stuff in it but this was a big missed opportunity

The part where he fell face first on the pavement with Rocky saying "Get up, get up" had me laughing in the theater. And not in a good way.

They didn’t pull it off though. The setting was clever but they just didn’t hit those beats. Shoulda brought Meek back for a track too.

I remember Rocky 6 having a week montage too though. Might be on par with that one.

That said I think this one has some of the best fighting. Those were real good.
