726215, y'all gon be OK when Night Dogg reinvent the comic book movie?
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Dec-03-17 01:41 AM
Word is this is going beyond a trilogy and he really is creating a new comic universe with new characters.

A hyper-realistic comic book universe, instead of kissing ass to helm wack passionless flicks about characters that are 40, 60, 80 goddamn years old and been done to death. I mean, how Batman mommy and daddy die again? I forgot. Why don't you show that shit against at the start of the next Batman franchise. How Superman get here? I forgot. I'm sure you'll remind me. Spidey got bit? BY A SPIDER? AWWWW SHIT!!!

Finally, someone has emerged to reinvent the wheel.

Damn.

Genius.

Glad I stuck with him. Whew.

Welp, back to Ingram highlights. Wish Kuzma and Lonzo would pass him the damn ball in the clutch. Ain't like they shot creators.
726216, Of course that would be cool. But....who or what is Night Dogg?

726221, Glad he's playing in the "Unbreakable" universe
Posted by araQual, Sun Dec-03-17 07:46 PM

726222, no agendas but I agree.

the MCU formula is its own thing, largely boring and repetitive to me at this point (The Avengers build-up in 2012 has led to a long con, where every movie sets up the next without really standing on its own).

Unbreakable and Split explore superhero themes on their own terms, without relying on the same tired formats.
726226, They will not be ok, Ba

They need dem pearls to drop.

726269, he's already done this and it's his best work
Posted by gumz, Tue Dec-05-17 09:48 AM
i'm all in...i love the MCU but am digging this as well.
726285, All they need to do is catch up to where comics are today
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Dec-05-17 05:17 PM
and I am not talking the big DC and Marvel comics. I am talking the smaller print stuff.

Astro City for exampled, figured out a way to make a superman like character interesting.

All i am saying is if M Night makes a more realistic superhero story he wouldn't be the first.

726286, Yes. Are you gon be ok discussing this without your usual dogshit agenda fuckery?

You know, like a reasonable human being?
726298, Dope, hoping he executes it well

As for MKnight - not sure if I've told this story before - but while I was in Atlanta on my final rotation, the cat I was staying with (he's a director himself, involved in a lot of cultural documentaries) had MKnight over for dinner and M is a great conversationalist - we were rapping on everything from technical direction to social justice to international law....and then to our enjoyment, he had brought over an advance copy of Split and some searing opinions.

I had heard a lot of hearsay about how he was awkward or rubs people the wrong way...and I can see why because he tells it like he sees it and is incredibly detailed but he's also willing to hear and accept opposing opinions. Good dude with ambitions and vision that I respect to the nth degree, just hoping it doesn't get lost in translation with this trilogy.

hope he at some point does something to overcome that but

that right there was a singularly horrific piece or work
726310, we all have our hangups. tarantino made deathproof.

del toro made mimic.

spike on a decade long L streak.

fuck is oliver stone doing?

coen brothers got several misses.

i could go on.

you wanna be one of them people tryna out-groan the other self-aware attention-seekers whenever night dogg's name comes up like it's fucking 2012? cool. you do that in some other threads.

it's not 2012. He's just made two hits and he's the ROI king right now.
726311, RE: he also got The Happening
Posted by astralblak, Wed Dec-06-17 11:04 PM
so 2 major Ls...

never saw After Earth, wasn't that shitted on too?

but other than that I've enjoyed his movies, never seen Lady In the Water or Split.

Everything else is good to great.

not a single one of those was as bad as airbender

THAT is how cartoonishly bad it was

nice try though

>you wanna be one of them people tryna out-groan the other

I'll choose the option of being one of those people whose money and time are valuable and are not willing to forget that ol shamalammadingdong is capable of a colossal ruining of his own bed-sheets, and therefore approach his movies with caution.

That of course as opposed to being completely UN-self aware by trying to win internet-snark-points by ironically referencing "attention seekers" while at the same time step-n-fetching ("night-dogg"?? really, like it's WHAT year now?) for a guy who wouldn't pee on him if his head was on fire or concocting some kinda weird hierarchy for superhero movies of all things

that latter cat being you

player

all that said, and back on topic

cautiously looking fwd to Glass, on paper it sounds like it'll be good

726322, they don't have to be AS bad...they're bad movies, dude
Posted by Basaglia, Thu Dec-07-17 07:55 PM
all the rest of that shit is just you being aggy. i don't care.
726301, I'm really excited, but I do hope it's only just one more movie
Posted by BigWorm, Wed Dec-06-17 01:02 PM
I enjoyed Unbreakable. I enjoyed "parts" of Split, and definitely appreciated the twist at the end.

One more movie to tie it all together and reach a satisfying conclusion sounds great. But I'm not sure I feel invested enough to sit through more than one last movie. Another fucking shared universe is exhausting even to just think about.

I hope he knocks it out of the park with Glass. After that, let's move on...
726303, Is the movie gon be OK?
Posted by jigga, Wed Dec-06-17 03:02 PM
Expectations have been lowered for quite a while now so not asking for much

Split was exactly that...OK

A throwaway line at the end does not a good movie make
726309, movies was great before willis even showed. *shrug*

726321, also, why the fuck does this type of post need to exist in 2017?
Posted by araQual, Thu Dec-07-17 07:33 PM
1. there are classier ways to show your 'allegiance' (just remember we're talking about movies here, this isn't real life: it's fake life. get your fucking priorities straight).

2. an artist's work will speak for themselves. i dig majority of what Shyamalan's done cept for two particular pieces of shit called "The Happening" and "The Last Airbender". otherwise Manoj has a pretty strong filmog (i must be one of the handful who actually dug "After Earth" and "Signs", also liked that "Devil" flick he had a hand in from 2010). "Unbreakable" was always my fav outta the bunch though. and it always gets its due praise for being a lowkey comic book origin story film. and as for giving him credit for changing that particular game, he clearly didn't have a plan for a trilogy in the beginning. "Split" and "Glass" will be almost two fucking decades after the fact, when shit like the MCU has already been established. i'm not sure what kinda specific praise you're giving Night here, but he didn't invent or reinvent shit. comic book films have proliferated with or without his take on them, on film and tv, and a lot of em have kicked ass. from all reports, Willis and Sam Jack were up for more movies at the time, but Night said his ideas were rejected cos of poor box office reception to "Unbreakable", but that was after him initially not even entertaining the thought at all. i'm glad he's coming back to this corner of his film universe, but he's waaaay fucking late to the party, so knock it off with this 'reinventing the wheel' shit.

3. he has great stuff, good stuff, and some truly awful stuff. stop being the fucking mistermaxxx of PTP and bring this agenda shit down a few notches. you sound like a fucking immature little child when u post like this. and i really have no idea WHY anyone would post like this lol. unless it's some long-term performance troll art kinda thing...? have we considered this possibility yet?

"Glass" is gonna be the shit, btw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_(2019_film).

726323, why'd those anti-M Night pile-ons have to exist everywhere pre-2015?
Posted by Basaglia, Thu Dec-07-17 08:06 PM
i dunno. doesn't matter now, does it? we're on the OTHER side. guess some people don't like talmbout night dogg now that we on the OTHER side.

i mean, i can up all those threads where people discussed m. night and the idea of his career being over with a malicious enthusiasm only matched in intensity by those white kids watching black kids be escorted into little rock central. that wasn't fun for me. but, night dogg taking 9 million of his own dough and flippng it for a 278 mil worldwide gross on split, right after flipping 5 mil of his own for 100 with the visit? yeah, it's kinda fun watching those SAME people shut the fuck up and not wanna talk about night dogg on this board no more.

so, i gotta be the petty nigga to bring him up...PETTILY.

*shrug*
726324, i mean i GET it...but it just brings out the worst in us lol
Posted by araQual, Thu Dec-07-17 08:25 PM
like my wordy-ass reply (which was a little harsh).
i wanna be able to celebrate the man's work w/out it having to be an us vs them thing. agenda posts rile us up too much.

edit: i dislike pile-ons in general, cos they usually don't end up reflecting my opinion on any piece of art/entertainment. eg. the Iron Fist and Defenders pile-ons in here not too long ago. i only just recently saw both shows and they rocked. it's this weird media-driven sheeple effect that has people who haven't even SEEN the movie/tv show in question talking shit about it online, almost unconsciously mirroring whatever 'think pieces' are written about it.
