714954, Larry Wilmores Nightly Show Cancelled...last show Thursday...
Posted by Voodoochilde, Wed Aug-17-16 07:35 AM
well, i for one was still watching this show. i think that, after a while, it did eventually find its own groove and it spoke on some specific topics better than other shows did. I also like Larry himself (and his perspective) quite a bit, (i think the show would have benefited from MORE time spent with Larry at the table talking honestly with folks, and less time with the side 'skits'. The side skits didn't always hit their mark, but the conversations at the table were always ether funny, on target, enlightening or all of the above.

In this house, the Nightly Show will be missed.

here's hoping Wilmore gets another chance somewhere to do his next thing.

would LOVE to see him over there on TBS with Samantha B (Samantha B is KILLIN it over there with Conan btw)

714958, i dig larry, and i gave the show a fair shot...

but it never really hit for me. when samantha, trevor noah, john oliver et al are killing it the way they are, you've gotta bring your a A game every time. just way too many misses on his part.
714965, I think the show should've been all round table format.

That's when the show was at its best every episode.

Of course, that wouldn't have fixed the ratings, and it would've been even less viral-clip friendly than it already was... but the quality would've been more consistent, probably.
714971, The comedians ruined the round table.

They ruined it by trying to fit their moment of funny
so that they could get followers, etc. They have to be
seen to get a check, but they took time away from the
relevant people.

them having a too short roundtable segment. It really should have been two segments long. They could have cut that second comedy sketch that happens after the 3rd commercial break. It usually wasn't that funny.

With the roundtable portion being only one segment, you have approximately 6 to 7 minutes to discuss topics. That's not nearly enough time to have a discussion of any substance. So the contributors felt like they needed to get their jokes in cause time was so short.

I think the show would have been better served if it were two segments of 6 to 7 minutes each of the roundtable then with one segment of Larry behind the desk doing his thing with the occasional sketch.

yep,
i agree, he should have focused more on cultivating his own version/take of the McLaughlin Group or something like that. (RIP John McLaughlin-i loved that show)

Larry said in one of the many interviews he gave this past week, that an all round table format was the original intent, but he didn't want to do that cause he would have just been the moderator without an opportunity to chime in with his own opinions.
714970, your perspective is spot on

with the nightly show, but
samantha bee is killing it

714998, yeah Samantha B has taken the old Daily Shows place for me

yep like i said above, Full Frontal with Samantha B has been my absolute favorite politic-omedy-show since it arrived. Each week she has been consistently fiercely on ALL cylinders and ON POINT. She's KILLIN it for sure!

714972, HE was fine. The other comedians ruined it.

His deadpan-ish tone was actually hilarious and great.

He had too many random sorta funny people on there, all
trying to over-make a name for themself on the panels
especially.

715035, Yup. Id hire him for a similar format show in a second

Either something political or even late night with guests. The round table killed him. Comedians can work and I understand how you wanna give people chances but he would bring one in these cats and they would be thirsty as fuck.

He needed seasoned people; either political commentators or comedians not trying to make a youtube highlight reel, lol

Expect The Nightly Show to go out with a bang, ratings-wise, tonight after tweeting that Jon Stewart will in fact guest on the final show. Comedy Central announced Monday it had pulled the plug on Larry Wilmore’s program and that tonight would be its last airing. Wilmore had hinted Stewart might stop by, earlier this week in an exit-interview with Deadline.

Stewart’s appearance is guaranteed ratings; when he literally popped up from under Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show desk during Colbert’s live coverage of the RNC, Stewart catapulted that show’s stats too. Stewart was involved in the creation of Wilmore’s late night program; he’s also an EP on Colbert’s show, both men being alums of Stewart’s The Daily Show tenure. Speaking thereof, Wilmore had been feted all this week with gifts of liquor send by Colbert as well as Daily Show alum Samantha Bee. Last night he put another alum, John Oliver, now host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, on notice tonight was his turn to provide the booze.
