UPDATE (8/6/2015): The full first teaser with dialogue for Vinyl is out, and it's a doozy: Bobby Cannavale with longer hair, a lot of cocaine, guitar-smashing, and the signature Marty Scorsese freeze-frame-and-voiceover touch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2irZnQMovI

Not much is known yet about Vinyl, the new HBO series from the minds of Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, and Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire), but that's enough to get people excited about whatever this thing is. Winter created the series, set in the New York City rock music scene of the '70s. Scorsese and Jagger are both executive producers, and Scorsese directed the pilot. Bobby Cannavale will star as a record executive who's attempting to revive his ailing record label, and Olivia Wilde plays his wife.

The first look at the show, which HBO just premiered on Instagram, has no dialogue but plenty of style. We see drugs, we see cash on top of a record (an allusion to payola, or somebody's drug money?), and we see at least the suggestion of sex. Plus some funky, noisy guitars. If anyone knows this world, it's probably Jagger and Scorsese, who has already directed documentaries on the Band (The Last Waltz), the Rolling Stones (Shine a Light), and Bob Dylan (No Direction Home). Vinyl will use music from the Stones and other bands of the era.

Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Mon Feb-15-16 12:10 AM
1. Consider me on board mainly because of Terence Winter.

2. Not sure how I feel about the murder of the disc jockey. Felt like they needed something to hold over Richie's head all season, and this was it.

3. Loved the back and forth with Richie's orgin story. Felt like The Godfather II (kinda).

4. I don't like the drug girl looking to be an A&R. She's not all that interesting.

Overall I'm kinda eh, but again I'm on board.
708158, Yeah, but she looks like Traci Lords, so I'll allow it. RE: #4.

A film about the 70's music scene that follows the suits as they scream about how important the music is while telling musicians to think about the business just isn't that interesting.

And two hour premieres are a lot to ask IMO and this one definitely felt like it could have been cut down to an hour. A comedian tweeted, "A two hour premiere is like ordering lobster on a first date" which I completely agree with.

I heard it go better but I'm just not that interested. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of the Scorsese's Terrence Winter Era.

Obviously it'll get a DVR/HBO Go boost but that's gotta be very disappointing for HBO. They usually give ending a second season but this might be too expensive to warrant one.
708237, This could hurt its odds as well

Terrible idea
708227, I'm thinking Boarwalk Empire pt. 2
Posted by j., Wed Feb-17-16 04:23 PM
start out with great fanfare and hype, peters out to irrelevancy, dies a slow miserable death (despite high-caliber acting, peace to Jeffrey Wright)

There's just not enough here, at least not in the pilot.

The plight of the artist getting jerked
The ingenue who discovers a new talent and gets jerked
The has-been businessman who wants to cash out and gets jerked

All of these plotlines have potential to be interesting

But the pilot wraps them all up in Marty's grittayy style and it comes off forced

I'll check ep 2 on demand, not must see tv for me. If ep 2 is grittier than the 1st I'm out

The New York Dolls literally "bring the house down"? Waaaaay too on the nose. I kept hoping for it to be a hallucination(which would have also been trite), but it seemed like they were playing that it "actually happened".

Other than that, it worked, mostly due to the acting and the music. Canavale, Romano, a Temple, and Clay did their thing.
708337, it did.

Not during a show and not with the Dolls playing (it was another band's rehearsal) but that shit did collapse.

709461, I like the cast, but I'm having trouble buying all the way in.
Posted by Nodima, Sun Mar-13-16 07:46 PM
I can't help but compare this show to Mad Men right now, and I suppose in that sense it was smart to START from a shift rather than build to one because if they'd started with the record company on top it'd probably be completely shrugged off as derivative. But I still see the office dynamics as fairly similar so far, and I feel like this show is leaning far more heavily on name dropping bands and throwing cultural touchstones in than Mad Men ever did.

I just don't know what Vinyl's identity is yet; if Boardwalk Empire ever mastered anything, it was that it was pretty clear in its concept of itself. Vinyl so far just seems like an excuse to poorly imitate King Hannibal, Alice Cooper and Robert Plant and show Cannavale doing a lot of drugs. It's decent entertainment but I'd like to think there's a better show here, somewhere.

It's got a good looking exterior but not sure how comfortable the inside is just yet. I will say that Olivia Wilde is killing it, and I cannot stand the Nasty Bits frontman. I'm more interested in what happens now though so I guess the show is working somewhat. I do not love the artists imitations but I do like the references when they pop up. Wish they would keep it at that.

I'm an episode and a half behind (I stopped during the Elvis scene), but this show wants to be something it hasn't earned. They keep trying to do the musician vignettes like the pilot, but they don't seem to understand what they are for. And that dead friend episode was so telegraphed from the start, you could see that they thought they were Sixth Sensing it up when really, there was no reason to care.

The characters aren't likeable. And not in an anti-hero type of way. In a "this is fucking annoying" type of way. Also, they have this large cast and haven't defined who any of them are besides Richie (who, despite Canavale's amazing performance, isn't half as interesting as the show thinks he is) and Olivia Wilde (who I know is playig a character but all I seem to see each week is sad Olivia Wilde).

I want to like it. I forgive it way too much. But it wants to be heady, and it's not. It wants to be a David Milch show, but it's not smart enough.

Terence Winter leaves Vinyl over “creative differences”

Deadline is reporting that the 20-year partnership between HBO and writer-producer Terence Winter—a relationship that spans from the early days of The Sopranos, through Boardwalk Empire, and into this year’s Vinyl—has just hit a hiccup: Winter has been let go from his showrunning duties on the Bobby Cannavale-starring ’70s musical drama, with the network citing “creative differences” for the change. Winter will be replaced by screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, who scripted The Bourne Ultimatum and The Informant! for Steven Soderbergh, when the show returns for its second season—likely next year. (Godzilla and Minority Report’s Max Borenstein has also signed on as an executive producer.)

The change presumably comes as something of a surprise for Winter, who was talking about plans for Vinyl’s second season before its first had even begun airing. (The show is currently eight episodes into a 10-episode first season, and recently released an episode that our reviewer called its strongest of the season.) The show premiered to somewhat disappointing ratings back in February, despite a pedigree that included Mick Jagger and Winter’s old Boardwalk Empire collaborator Martin Scorsese. Its immediate renewal suggested a vote of confidence from the network, though, one that now seems to have been rescinded. “As we head into the second season of Vinyl, we have decided it is an appropriate time to make a change in the creative direction of the show,” the network said in a statement. “We have enjoyed a longtime partnership with Terry Winter at HBO,” it added, “and we look forward to our next collaboration with him.”

..but for whatever reason, they continue emphasize how desperate AC (and its owners/artists/employees are to find the next big act/hit.

sex, drugs, & money are always intertwined with the entertainment industry, but this is ridiculous. its almost as if someone said "..let's just have finestra fuck everything up doin' coke, only to have him try to save the day doin' EVEN MORE coke..."

that said, bobby cannavale is a very good actor. the cast is cool, but a bit clichéd.

its early, but they need to find a better premise for season 2. if they're still strugglin' to salvage AC next season, i'm out.

Richie fucks up, does a bunch of coke to cope with it, ends up in an even worse predicament, and has a brief moment of clarity before his next fuck up.

This show has no idea what it wants to be, as shown by the departure of Terence Winter. I love period pieces though and the music industry interests me so I'll check out the next season in hopes that it'll be more focused.

I like Max Casella and Annie Parisse a lot. The whole Nasty Bits stuff is lame, as is the corny white dude trying to understand what's hip.

Cannavale is usually likable for me but this role is just ridiculous and he is pretty damn disagreeable. Dude is terrible. And Olivia Wilde is fine. Very fine.

Interested to see how they end it, but they need to change things a bit and make it a bit more gritty. Not faux gritty.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/vinyl-canceled-at-hbo-905537

Sources say the decision to cancel Vinyl rather than reboot the series for season two is part of a move designed to free up new HBO programming head Casey Bloys to put his stamp on the premium cabler. Bloys took over for Michael Lombardo earlier this year.

The Vinyl decision comes as HBO has had a string of problems — Westworld has been twice delayed and will now debut in October after being originally eyed for 2015; two shows picked up to series from David Fincher were ultimately abandoned as was a limited series from Steve McQueen; and its Lewis and Clark mini was scrapped.

Vinyl becomes the latest HBO series to be scrapped after earning a second season. The cabler did the same with Jack Black-Tim Robbins comedy The Brink and famously scrapped Luck's sophomore run after a string of horses died.

The news comes as HBO is heading into the Game of Thrones season six finale on Sunday with the fantasy drama earning high praise for its current run. Next up are Sarah Jessica Parker comedy Divorce, long-in-the-works Vice Principals as well as David Simon's The Deuce, among others.
