699768, Top 10 Cruise Movies
Posted by go mack, Wed Jun-24-15 01:07 PM
With MI5 coming out, thought would see what everyone's favorite Cruise movies are. I have to admit, I love most Tom Cruise movies, there's a few I don't like and a few I haven't seen.

Im not even sure I can put them in order yet, just gonna throw out movies that will probably make the cut first before sorting.

Top Gun
Rain Man
Minority Report
Edge of Tomorrow
MI1
A Few Good Men
Jerry Maguire
The Color of Money
Magnolia
Collateral

I don't know, that may not be it but close. Born on 4th is good but depressing so I never rewatch. Interview with a Vampire I haven't seen in years, not sure if holds up yet. I may have to sneak Days of Thunder in as well, even tho its basically Top Gun with nascar I love it.
699769, Off the top...

biggest surprise inclusion so far to me, always thought this was considered terrible but I've never actually seen it
699795, haha...
Posted by Af-1, Thu Jun-25-15 09:28 AM
When I wrote it, I nearly added the words "don't clown me for this!"

I've always liked it though.
699792, 1. Mission: Impossible
Posted by will_5198, Thu Jun-25-15 09:14 AM
M:I is the perfect action-thriller template. super-tight storytelling with action set pieces that still impress 20 years later.

2. War of the Worlds - Yeah, it falls apart for the final third, but the preceding 80 minutes are no less amazing.

3. Top Gun - I'm definitely not a ho(e), but will admit to all the flaws and misplaced reverence based on nostalgia. pre-teen nostalgia of fighter pilot movies is *so* strong though.

4. Risky Business - The whole premise of this movie never gets old, in the fact that it was even made.

5. Minority Report - Have not seen this in a long time, so could be higher or lower. Should re-watch.

6. Magnolia - Used to be one of my favorite films, but my last viewing was brutally unkind to it. Still a great performance.

7. Mission: Impossible III - Tortured Cruise, Revenge Cruise, and Running Fast Cruise. Of course it's good.

I'll stop there, because I still have never seen Jerry Maguire or A Few Good Men in their entirety. Don't care for Rain Man, and the rest of his films I've seen are all on the same enjoyment level.
699794, Always baffled when people ignore this:
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jun-25-15 09:22 AM

>2. War of the Worlds - Yeah, it falls apart for the final
>third, but the preceding 80 minutes are no less amazing.

SO much of this movie works enormously well. I put this in my Top 10 Spielbergs on Twitter (toward the tail end) and got absolutely roasted, I guess because people are *still* mad that the son lives.
699796, Plus, Crooze be running hard as shit in it
Posted by John Forte, Thu Jun-25-15 09:31 AM
699817, i feel like i shouldn't like War of The Worlds...
Posted by PROMO, Thu Jun-25-15 07:22 PM
mainly because it was panned overall by critics, and fans alike (maybe moreso hardcore sci-fi fans), yet, whenever it comes on TV i find myself being unable to turn the channel usually.
701059, That scene after the ferry where they watch...

Minority Report
Mission Impossible: III
Edge of Tomorrow

Jerry Maguire

Honorable Mention:

Mission Impossible IV: Ghost Protocol
Magnolia
The Firm
Risky Business (I feel bad not including it in the top 10, but I didn't connect with the movie.)
699846, Knight and Day is a sleeper..

699861, Eyes Wide Shut is one of the greatest movies ever made.
Posted by denny, Sat Jun-27-15 03:32 PM
I think I've watched it 20 times. There is so much going on in that movie I could write a book about it.

War of the Worlds has got to be one of the best action movies of the past 20 years. And Born on the Fourth is a very, very good movie....probably his best acting performance. Colour of Money also stands out.

The rest of them are a jumbled bunch of hit or miss for me. But I have to admit...his filmography is pretty good compared to other superstar BO draws from his era. He's made good decisions in what to get involved with for the most part.
699862, bwood's list
Posted by bwood, Sat Jun-27-15 03:58 PM
1. Risky Business
2. Collateral
3. Eyes Wide Shut
4. Mission: Impossible
5. Interview with the Vampire
6. The Color of Money
7. Edge of Tomorrow
8. Tropic Thunder
9. Born on the Fourth of July
10. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Still have to see The Firm and A Few Good Men (I know, I know)

He was great in Magnolia, Rain Man, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Rock of Ages, Jack Reacher and Jerry Maguire but those movies suck. And it is not his fault at all.

Vanilla Sky and Valkyrie could've easily been on this list.
699872, he should have never been cast as Jack Reacher in the first place.
Posted by PROMO, Sun Jun-28-15 01:43 PM
therefore, i can't blame him for that movie.

that said, as a lover of that book series, i was bummed at his casting because he can't be that character and because the movie wasn't good.

In no particular order:
Minority Report
Edge of Tomorrow
The Outsiders
Risky Business
Collateral
Rain Man
War of the Worlds
A Few Good Men
Tropic Thunder
Jack Reacher
699929, The outsiders!
Posted by denny, Mon Jun-29-15 07:01 PM
That completely slipped my mind. Man, that book and movie were such a huge turning point for me in my youth. I read the book when I was in grade 4 and it completely changed my life. Then I remember my pops rented a vcr for my birthday with the movie version which I didn't even know existed at the time. I remember jumping up and down when he showed me the case. That shit was the foundation of my self-identity.
699969, RE: The outsiders!

Its great but hard to include in my top 10 cruise movies since his part is so minor. Him, Lowe, Dillon and Swayze are barely in it if I remember, maybe Im wrong, admit its been a while since I've seen it.
700010, True but I barely had 10 & I loved that movie more than most his movies

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Jun-30-15 09:24 AM
Arrogant but still endearing and super funny. For me that's:

Jerry Maguire
Edge of Tomorrow
Few Good men

The flicks I like that aren't quite Peak cruise (probably because he is super serious Cruise) are:

Minority Report
Mission Impossible: III
Eyes Wide Shut

I've been on a Cruise marathon the past month, rewatched a lot of movies and saw a few I never saw. Really impressive filmography imo, very few I don't care for at all. A couple I didn't care for much when I first saw them I enjoyed this time around (Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut) Im turning into a Cruise stan now I believe. lol

Also, is this guys director's list of who he's worked with one of the best ever> Some of the films didn't turn out great but that's an amazing list (a few aren't on par with others but have all had their moments)..

Coppola
Scorsese
Kubrick
Spielberg
Ridley Scott
Tony Scott
Barry Levinson
Oliver Stone
Ron Howard
Rob Reiner
Sydney Pollack
Brian De Palma
Cameron Crowe
Paul Thomas Anderson
Michael Mann
John Woo
Bryan Singer
JJ Abrams

701056, Good point about the access to the high-quality directors he has worked with
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jul-27-15 10:25 PM
Granted, he can choose whichever director he wants, but he's really chosen the right filmmakers and scripts throughout his career.
