687675, Peaky Blinders
Posted by gumz, Mon Oct-27-14 06:33 AM
yall up on this? I didn't see a post. Just started season 2...this show is pretty damn good.
687685, It's a pretty damn good show
Posted by JiggysMyDayJob, Mon Oct-27-14 09:51 AM
I'm calling it Downton Abbey for people who like Boardwalk Empire. Of course this is only because of the setting and accents.

Sam O'Neil chewed up the scenery in season 1, I can't wait to start watching the second season.
687726, i def compared it to Boardwalk from the offset
Posted by gumz, Mon Oct-27-14 01:46 PM
there's some similarities there for sure. Also the dynamic between Polly and Tommy feels like a bette version of Jax and Gemma. it is it's own show for sure but I get the comparisons.
687686, two epsiodes in on the first season
Posted by pdafunk, Mon Oct-27-14 10:04 AM
really dig it so far.
687698, Does Sophie Rundle get some burn in this?
Posted by Dae021, Mon Oct-27-14 11:01 AM
I really enjoyed her work in Happy Valley.

I've been intrigued by this but just haven't had the chance to get it a spin.
687724, yup...she's the main character's sister
Posted by gumz, Mon Oct-27-14 01:44 PM
she's not a lead but she definitely gets some screen time. her character is awesome once they develop her a bit more. she holds her own for sure.
687727, Good to hear, I like her
Posted by Dae021, Mon Oct-27-14 01:47 PM
I don't know if she's super talented, but I like her work.

would love to see more from her.

Kills everything he is in....dope show
687725, yeah he's awesome...
Posted by gumz, Mon Oct-27-14 01:45 PM
although the more i see from him the more i realize that the Bane voice wasn't much of a stretch from his actual voice. he always manages to be a force to reckon with screen though. i've only seen 2 eps with him so far and he's awesome in both.
687759, COT DAMN now I have to watch
Posted by Frank Mackey, Tue Oct-28-14 06:42 AM
Didn't know he was in this.
687766, wait what?!

687756, All caught up on the series...can't wait for the last 2 eps
Posted by gumz, Tue Oct-28-14 06:37 AM
wish more folks were caught so we could discuss some plot points. I have questions but nobody to ask them.
687770, Where are you getting season 2 eps from?
Posted by JiggysMyDayJob, Tue Oct-28-14 11:41 AM
cause I marathon watched the first season in an afternoon and I want to get caught up.

help a brother out.
687772, it's out there...
Posted by gumz, Tue Oct-28-14 12:12 PM
i'm sure you can find it if you do some digging. i use xbmc so may not be helpful to you.
688191, just got caught up last night *minor spoilers*
Posted by pdafunk, Thu Nov-06-14 09:32 AM
there's a lot of different angles going on. camden town, the italians, horse racing, prodigal sons, pro-peace IRA working with the Crown.

i was multi-tasking last night and didn't quite get why they stood up that doofus to go to jail.

also, surprised at how quick the london gangs are turning on the peaky blinders. i have a feeling tom hardy's going to make an example of that "head baker" tommy sent down.

fun stuff as always, though.
688199, yeah i didn't really get that either...
Posted by gumz, Thu Nov-06-14 01:26 PM
>i was multi-tasking last night and didn't quite get why they
>stood up that doofus to go to jail.

only thing i could think of is that they need to let the cops that are on the take arrest a few of them from time to time so it's not obvious that they're letting them get away with everything. picking a guy who doesn't have a criminal record means he spends minimal time in jail and gets out, they basically pay him to do that while the real thugs stay free and keep running shit.

that's how I interpreted but it wasn't all that clear. Sometimes between the sound quality of the streams and the accents I have a hard time hearing certain things that are said.
688200, that makes sense to me.

If you have access to Netflix, I suggest re-watching the show with the captions on. The captions made a huge difference when I was re-watching the episodes for the second season. Lots of little words here and there that I missed were cleared up, which helped to make sense of things.
688628, I don't...unfortunately

688251, Season 2 finale was on point...really dope show

688255, shit. is it 6 episodes? thought i only saw 4 out there
Posted by pdafunk, Fri Nov-07-14 11:19 AM
didn't know the season was already done.
688260, i saw the 6th last night...they were still airing
Posted by gumz, Fri Nov-07-14 11:59 AM
season just ended last night so it depends on when you checked, there may have only been 4 eps at that time.
688580, great ending to S2 (spoilers)
Posted by Drizzit, Fri Nov-14-14 08:44 PM
loved how they teased down by the water by pj harvey all season through various instrumental backgrounds, but then it hit when the boys got the epsom.

haven't been that stressed through a finale in some time. great threads for S3.

man, this show makes me want to drink scotch.
688594, Last show that made me want to drink this much was madmen

Just started season 2. Only thing I hate is the music. They choose stuff that's too modern for the show and really ruin good scenes as it makes it cheesy

Posted by High Society, Wed Mar-25-15 04:57 PM
she burned through the first 2 seasons in a day...
she NEVER does that with shows.

I watched first 2 episodes off strength of her recommendation...

anyone have trouble with the music?

Like the White Stripes blaring when Murphy walks into a building in slo-mo?

Kinda distracting to me. First 2 eps okay - hoping worth my time.
708703, season 2 >>>> season 1

season 1 of course laid the ground work but, season 2 is markedly better. wonder
what season 3 will have in store.

Helen McCrory, English Stage and Screen Star, Dies at 52
Alex Ritman 1 hr ago

Helen McCrory, the English stage and screen star who appeared in three Harry Potter films, alongside The Queen, Peaky Blinders and Skyfall, has died. She was 52.

Her husband, actor Damian Lewis, broke the news on Friday.

“Heartbroken to announce that after an heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and might woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family,” he wrote in a Twitter post. “She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”

A regular across stage, TV and film since the 1990s (her first film role was in 1992’s Interview With a Vampire), McCrory first made a name for herself in U.K. theater, landing a London Evening Standard award for best actress in 2002 for Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, and an Olivier Award nomination in 2006 for As You Like It.

Following roles in Charlotte Gray and Casanova, her film career hit a high note with her portrayal of Cherie Blair in Steven Frear’s royal biopic The Queen, which saw her earn best supporting actress nomination in 2006 from the London Critics’ Circle. She reprised the role in the follow up, 2010’s The Special Relationship.

McCrory had been due to play Bellatrix Lestrange in 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but was forced to pull out due to her first pregnancy (the role went to Helena Bonham Carter). However, she was later cast as Bellatrix’s sister Narcissa Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and also appeared into the final two-films of the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Parts 1 and 2. Other notable films include Skyfall, playing a British MP, Hugo, as French actress Mama Jeanne, and the Alan Rickman-directed period drama, A Little Chaos.

In 2013, McCrory was cast in one of her most famous roles, Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders, appearing in all five seasons of Steven Knight’s hit crime drama that have aired so far. Most recently she was seen as a lawyer in the hit ITV miniseries Quiz, based on the 2001 scandal surrounding the U.K.’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? TV competition, and in the BBC thriller Roadkill alongside Hugh Laurie

741189, I was so sad to see this. Helen was so charming.

It ain't the Shelbys without Aunt Pol.
741218, I agree.
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Apr-20-21 03:12 PM
Pretty hard to see the show going forward without her. She was the lone strong legitimate female presence on the show that held her own throughout all five seasons IMO. She provided a nice balance with all the testosterone that domineered the majority of the show's plot points.
741191, RIP! she was the best part of the show.

horrible news
743867, The final batch of episodes started late last month in England.
Posted by Numba_33, Sun Mar-20-22 10:56 AM
I'm going to assume they'll take a while for Netflix to air them here in the US, but for those intrepid enough to hunt them down, the episodes are available online.

I do like how the other female characters are becoming more pronounced since the Aunt Polly character is gone for unfortunate reasons.
743984, The series finale aired this past Sunday across the pond.
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Apr-05-22 01:02 PM
Overall, the last batch of episodes was pretty good. I did like how Aunt Polly's stamp was still on these batch of episodes despite the actress passing away. I wonder how much time hand to be spent rewriting and reshooting this season once Helen McCrory passed away. The last bit of twists and back stabbing in the last episodes was an interesting way for the series to end.

Hopefully BBC will port this to Netflix sooner rather than later.
743986, I'm hearing there's a movie in the works
Posted by Mafamaticks, Tue Apr-05-22 01:23 PM
744035, I started it this weekend
Posted by mista k5, Mon Apr-11-22 12:30 PM
I'm kind of burned out on TV shows about crime but didn't have anything else to watch so I gave it a try. I'm about 4 episodes in. I'm enjoying it so far. Nothing amazing but everything is really well done.
745139, It gets better
Posted by makaveli, Sun Jul-10-22 08:21 AM
Not in my top 5 shows ever but may crack the top ten. It’s very good.
745172, so I loved the first season, thought it ended great
Posted by mista k5, Tue Jul-12-22 12:41 PM
...then the last episode started lol i didnt realize there was one episode left and for that episode began the end of my enjoyment of the show. i did make it through the rest of the seasons and i didnt like them. it kind of seem to fall into the same tropes and was kind of exhausting. i actually did enjoy the last season, not as much as the first but it felt better than the rest to me. its not a bad show but just got redundant to me.

ill probably watch the movie but not in a hurry to.
745177, The show was fairly uneven, but the highs
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Jul-12-22 03:03 PM
make it worth sticking around until the end. I vaguely remember the season with the Russian family being fairly middling. Tom Hardy and Sam Neill knocked it out the park in terms of being supporting actors and it was a shame the actress the played Aunt Polly wasn't around for the last season. She was a great balance for how male driven the show was as a female authority figure.

On a side note, this show made me wish Tom Hardy's Taboo show didn't get cancelled.
745244, Hold up Taboo got cancelled
Posted by JiggysMyDayJob, Mon Jul-18-22 03:08 PM
Last I heard he and his dad were still working on the show, damn.

Gotta say this last season was meh, the Joe Kennedy shit was hit or miss in some episodes. I know there's talk of a movie to finish the series, but I would've preferred if everything would've been wrapped up here.

Also, Michale's mustache was mad laughable.
