The crime thriller will debut on Oct. 31, as opposed to Oct. 17, when it was set to debut against the Nicholas Sparks adaptation �The Best of Me,� animated comedy �The Book of Life� and the Brad Pitt World War II film �Fury.�

Open Road didn�t give a reason for the shift, but last week Sony Pictures pushed the release of �Fury� up a month, pitting it head-to-head with �Nightcrawler.� Both films would have been pitched at similar adult audiences and that weekend was looking awfully crowded.

In its new slot, �Nightcrawler� has more breathing room. It will vie for attention with two limited releases, the Nicole Kidman thriller �Before I Go to Sleep� and the Daniel Radcliffe horror film �Horns.�

�Nightcrawler,� directed by Dan Gilroy, features an emaciated looking Gyllenhaal as a driven crime journalist who bends one ethical line too many.

Jake Gyllenhaal, having gotten the blockbuster-hero thing out of his system with 2010’s Prince of Persia, is clearly interested in exploring new acting challenges, as his turns in last year’s Prisoners and Enemy proved. In director Dan Conroy’s sleek crime-thriller, Nightcrawler, the 33-year-old star has found a role in which he can act against his good looks and buff bod. He throws himself out there and falls — until something darker and deeper kicks in.

Gyllenhaal plays unemployed Angeleno Louis Bloom, a marginal, big-eyed galoot, we first see stealing metal for cash. One night, he pulls his clunker off to the side of the freeway to gawk at a fiery crash. It’s one of those daily disasters that most commuters drive past and later watch on the local evening news. Bloom discovers the source of that TV footage: rogue stringers — called “nightcrawlers” — who roam the city, cameras in hand, after dark. It’s an “aha” moment.

Bloom steals a bike, and buys a camera and police scanner. He reinvents himself, selling his footage to a local TV news director named Nina (played terrifically by Rene Russo). And thus — in a twisted take on the American rags-to-riches story — a nightcrawler is born.

Written with a deft touch by Conroy, who penned The Bourne Legacy for director brother Michael Conroy (who also produces here), the tightly-framed tale delves into the same voyeuristic themes as Blow-Up and Rear Window. We are watching footage of someone capturing footage of something forbidden yet thrilling.

Drawn to carnage like viewers of the nightly news, Bloom crosses the police tape, getting a narcotic thrill from his video safaris. And then he takes his nocturnal activities to a new and dangerous place, actually staging filmable tableaux, and, later, stumbling into an apparent home invasion. He becomes an active participant in the story rather than just a passive observer.

Fast-paced, character-driven and creepy (with appropriately lurid imagery from cinematographer Robert Elswit), Nightcrawler overturns familiar LAPD car-chase clichés, while still delivering a rush. We are drawn to Bloom’s voyeurism and repelled by his actions: a tension that builds to a sickening climax. We can’t look away.

Nightcrawler opens in theaters nationwide on Oct. 31

I thought it was quite good, but basically every scene in the television station bugged me a little. It was a bit too on the nose, kind of like parts of season five of The Wire. The aspects that dealt with JG's running his business were fucking great though, and more subtle, so it balanced out.

It was really funny too, which I was surprised by. The tonal shifts are odd, but I enjoyed it and laughed a lot. It kind of felt like Taxi Driver + Blow Out + The Informant! So take that however you like, I guess.

So I'm excited to see this.

One review said it may not be as good as Taxi Driver, but it should be mentioned in the same breath as that and Network.

My boy saw this in Toronto over the weekend and said said if Drive was a LA noir superhero movie, then Nightcrawler is a LA noir supervillain movie.

Taxi Driver is dour as shit.

This is basically a twisted, pitch black comedy (albeit one that's pretty fucking terrifying at times).

If anything, it's a lot closer tonally to Scorsese's King of Comedy than it is to Taxi Driver.

I don't get any of the Taxi Driver comparisons at all.

I really like Mike D'Angelo's comparison, when he said it's as if Max Fischer from Rushmore grew up to be Chuck Tatum from Ace In The Hole. That feels pretty close to right.

A lot you are gonna hate it cause of the ending, but we'll get more into that as the movie opens.

This to me was a satire on journalism mixed with a noir thriller and in Gilroy's own words "a success story".

Jake killed it. I mean I was fascinated, frightened, and disgusted by Lou Bloom all at once. I mean I can't believe I was rooting for a guy whose clearly a sociopath. But he's a product of his environment trying to survive.

Watching his ticks and little nuances gave a lot of detail into his character.

Rene, Bill, and Riz Ahmed also gave very good performances as well.

But, this movie gets in tells it's story and then gets out.

I also loved that the movie is essentially the first act of a story.

Best performance & writing to hit the screen for me so far this year

Opening scene sets the tone well & from there it pulls back for a nice slow build. From the moment gas spills on the charger this flick takes off in the wildest direction both imaginable & unimaginable.

Fun ride but disturbing at the same time

The conversations w/ Paxton & Russo once he goes full metard are awesome

The business partnerships are brutal

As the credits roll it all still felt poignant

Basically, a film that embodies the quote, "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

The tone is absolutely perfect; a dark comedy that takes itself serious enough that it is always a believable world. The climatic scene is just plain awesome. Wildly impressive debut for Dan Gilroy (and he might have bested his brother's films.)

Definitely recommend this one.

Like with Whiplash, I'm very happy that I didn't watch the trailer before going in. Gives away way too much IMO.

The satire is by far the least interesting thing about it. It's far far more effective as a character study, a horror film of sorts. Luckily, the media satire stuff is pretty minimal-- it's not pretending to say anything remotely new, it's just giving our character a muddy world in which he is free to revel.

But God, what a tremendous horror film. And hilarious! And that character! The dialogue and performance! Gyllenhaal! I want to see it again. Definitely one of the best of the year.

The tone, the script, the pacing, the cinematography, and of course the performances, highlighted by Gylenhaal who was just absolutely brilliant...the mannerisms, the range, the matter of fact creepiness, the honest lack of emotion...incredible.

Gyllenhal was creepy and calculating; the scenes with Russo and Rick were the best parts to me. I was actually rooting for him and I was glad to see become a "success", even though his best quality was not having boundaries.

... I forget who I was talking about this with on here, bwood or SankofaII (or both), but I was saying I was more excited for Fury than this.

I really liked Fury. But this is one of the best of the year. By a lot. I can't shake it.

Best Actor is going to be too much a dogfight with too many heavyhitters (who don't deserve it imo) for Gyllenhaal to sneak in. I'll be popping bubbly if he does though-- really, I only need him and Oyelowo to get into the category. (Admittedly, having seen Cumberbatch or Redmayne yet.)

yea...and we both know the Academy hates "Dark genre" movies like this...

yea, I need Oyelowo and Gyllenhaal to slip in and i'd be ok. though something tells me THAT won't happen for both of them, maybe ONE of them.

honestly, if I see McConaughey in there for Interstellar...solid performance, not remotely award worthy, i'm going to be pissed.

Good looks.

Fury was great, but I really liked this. My expectations were probably too high for Fury.

Jake Gyllenhaal is not an actor I like but he is doing career best work in Nightcrawler. He is creepy, manipulative and exploitative. He embraces this character and the darkness of subject matter he covers or perhaps curates.

At times I thought Jake was playing the role exactly like Christian Bale would. This is probably a good thing.

Rene Russo is getting a nomination. Good to see her back on screen.

There is quite a lot of the plot which I found unrealistic, contrived and ridiculous but I was enjoying the film enough to let it pass. The tone of the film and the look of the city really kept me engaged.

Strong directorial debut and very good screenplay with excellent dialogue.

Was looking for a reason to see it

This is an excellent film about psychopathy.
Lou Blooms dominate the media world. It is the best place for liars and manipulators to earn a living. I liked this film and i thought it was very realistic.

Gilroy created a great character (and Gyllenhaal brought him to life) but then stuck him in a story that's been told countless times, and better at that: hey, y'all, the media is bloodthirsty and without morals and/or ethics, and would even give airtime (or in this case, take "raw" footage) from a psychopath in order to win in the ratings! The media shole is BAD!

Robert Elswit made it look great, and Rene Russo was as good as she could be, given her role

But I wasn't as enthralled with this as a lot of you were, and I'm a big fan of film noir, so that wasn't the issue

Also, and this is just a nitpick that's exclusive to me, but almost every time they shot a driving scene, I was taken out of the movie. Why? Because they kept shooting the cars on the exact same strip of roadway, between Victory Blvd. and Vanowen in the Valley. I know this because I kept seeing the same signage of business over in that area. Again, this was MY nitpick, not really worthy of some protracted debate, but it was distracting.

The movie was okay, the script and Gyllenhaal will probably be nominated, but I was still like eh.

To set this movie in present day made zero sense to me. I also didn't believe for a second that a major network news affiliate would or even could show footage of a guy filming dead people at a homicide even if the faces were blurred out. And not even if the producer is in sweeps mode fighting for her job.

An incredible character and portrayal ultimately soured by a bizarrely unrealistic setting.

I didn't notice, but now I really want to look closer for it. That's hilarious that multiple people I know spotted it so easily.

Everything after the climactic car chase just rang a little hollow for me and was really disappointing because I LOVED Rick and really wanted to see him catch a W. But was more the overtly sexual dialogue between Jake and Rene over that final bit of tape and how easily he slipped out of the detective's clutches. I also found it odd that he went with the camera trucks once he could start his business because I felt the muscle car had become basically his signature and the reason he was able to get to certain sites so quickly.

Maybe I'm fucked up, but I was surprised at how much I laughed.

Especially at Riz. He's great in this. I keep forgetting he's that British rapper dude.

It doesn’t demand a sequel. There are no burning questions that need answering. Thing is, the characters were so strong and well defined that the further adventures of Lou holds some promise if you ask me. I thought we’d see Lou lose his mind completely by the end, but he’s so firmly in control of himself and the world around him that he’s got serious legs for further exploration.

Naturally a repeat of the same story wouldn’t do, but a new venture, a new challenge, some more devious form of blackmail and entrapment and you’ve got yourself another movie. Shit, just exploring the relationship between Lou and Nina would be worth watching, or the LAPD’s attempts to bring him down. I doubt anything like that happens, just noting that there’s some high quality character work here.

I didn’t really get the “yeah, we get it, the media is a bunch of blood sucking leeches, we’ve seen this a million times” complaints others have. I didn’t see this as *that* movie. Yeah, there’s some commentary in there, but said commentary wasn’t overbearing, preachy, or blatant. The story I took from it was basically about an incredibly well read sociopath and his drive to succeed at all costs. It’s basically Scarface with cameras instead of cocaine.

and again the climax, while EXCELLENT, is down right, huh you're persuing cop cars and a red mustang and not one is like hey there is some psycho on the chase with us?
