As well as Cruise's own M:I franchise, plus it's core conceit is uniquely wedged between soft and hard sci-fi. It's a very comedic movie about an amazingly serious predicament, with an intensely video game like structure that I could see undermining the weight of said very serious problem for whatever reason people often (and often, I s'pose, rightly) find game narratives sophomoric compared to even the silliest of regular movies, books or whatever.

But if the right critique of this movie that explains why it can't transcend cult status (not that it needs to, of course) I haven't found it yet. It's probably the most explicitly charismatic Cruise has been since he quit dramas, and Emily Blunt has never been sexier nor more surprising.

Maybe it's as simple as all the mech-frames, which might either recall the worst bits of Matrix Revolutions or just imply deeply nerdy animé-profile-on-Twitter vibes people don't want to make time for, lol.
