Posted by JRennolds, Sat Aug-25-12 10:45 AM
These are usually the final two titles that I read in my monthly stack. Both books are pretty excellent but I really have to be in a mood to enjoy them.
Never been a horror fan, love nature profusely.
Animal Man appeals to me because of the bizarre art and weirdo villains. I also love the family dynamic.
Swampy is fun because the concepts are so cool and hey, the lead is a talking salad GOD.
I am excited for ROTWORLD. I have a feeling that its conclusion might wrap both titles though.
Here's to hoping, that it does not.

623899, More library hotness: Daredevil: Frank Miller & Klaus Janson v. 3
Posted by buckshot defunct, Sat Aug-25-12 06:14 PM
Not to take away from the past 10 years or so of (mostly) amazing Daredevil comics, but every time I go back to one of these Frank Miller collections it always changes my perspective on things a bit. This stuff holds up really, really well... and it never ceases to amaze me how much Miller contributed to this character. As diametrically opposed as Bendis' and Waid's run feel at times, it's pretty clear to me that they both share a common ancestor in this run. Incredibly dope stuff.

Volume 3 collects DD #185-191 (191 being a particular standout) and #219, Daredevil: Love & War (Sienkiewicz!!) and What If #28, which features an unsettlingly beefy Uatu. http://www.sketchmaven.com/colorguide/what-if-/28/1/1898

At this point in the game, Miller was mostly doing covers and scripts... but I notice on the splash pages he's credited with both "scripts" and "storytelling" - Not completely sure what the difference is there. Anyone know what that's about?

Posted by buckshot defunct, Sat Aug-25-12 11:53 PM
Liefeld ethers himself every time he picks up a pencil, Snyder should just keep it moving with the incredible comics work and pay him no mind. It does make me wonder about the environment at DC though

Posted by Brother_Afron, Sun Aug-26-12 08:29 AM
It does make me wonder about the
>environment at DC though

It seems people leave Marvel when they want to work on their own stuff, but they leave DC when they're essentially chased off the books by editorial foolishness.
623926, That's right, Brubaker is leaving Marvel too
Posted by buckshot defunct, Sun Aug-26-12 11:21 AM
But I keep forgetting that because he's not publicly being an asshole about it!
623956, MARVEL needs to spend that Avenger$ loot and...

624023, No.
Posted by Invisiblist, Mon Aug-27-12 08:02 AM
#1 That's not even comic money. And it's not even Marvel's really. That's Disney's, now.

#2 How in the hell do you think that Marvel and DC being the same company could ever be good for anyone?
623949, Seriously... DiDio MUST go. AND Bob Harras.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Sun Aug-26-12 07:27 PM
That company is being run all the way into the ground at this point.
623951, Just wait till we here at DC hit ya with a 2nd Johns JLA book.
Posted by JRennolds, Sun Aug-26-12 07:38 PM
Obvious that they are reaching for the side of Marvel's boat, as it steadily motors away.
623952, As much as I hate what's going on *creatively* at DC these days
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Sun Aug-26-12 08:14 PM
They're still managing to eat that market share, for the most part... It seems like Marvel is the one struggling to hold on in that department.

That said, the new JLA looks terrible. I'm sure it will be a smash hit.

Posted by justin_scott, Sat Aug-25-12 10:37 PM
Justice League #12 comes out Wednesday. Superman and Wonder Woman kissing on the cover. DC hyped this book BIG TIME, and it's print run is 120,000. They're selling for $10-20 on ebay right now (i've got two listed)

between that and revival #1, #1 2nd print, and #2, i made back all the money i spent on comics from the last 3 months plus some.
623914, Thanks

623921, I peeped that
Posted by Paps_Smear, Sun Aug-26-12 08:46 AM
although I already own pretty much all of em I still got for the ipad just to show off or read when I'm bored and away somewhere.
624104, Yeah, it was nice to test drive some of the ones I skipped
Posted by buckshot defunct, Mon Aug-27-12 05:37 PM
But after skimming through them, I think my original instincts were right.

Thief of Thieves #1 had a cool tone to it and I'm a little tempted to see what happens next. That might've been my favorite out of the books I initially skipped, but it didn't blow me away. Still, I'm a sucker for that heist shit. I'm secretly like an armchair Danny Ocean.

Hell Yeah and Danger Club (wow, Danger Club is a great looking book) were 2 where I could really see the potential... But I dunno, maybe the superhero premises were a turn-off? Something didn't connect here. Similar but less regrettable response to America's Got Powers, too.

Whereas Dancer #1 probably wasn't quite as good as those, but felt unfamiliar enough that I kind of wanted to read on.

Glory seemed like it might be on track to be cool, but this 'first' issue felt it had to set up way too many things before it could really get the story going. I don't like having to deal with all that unfamiliar background before I've latched onto a sense of story or character. Sorry, JR

Alpha Girl seemed to kind of be going for that Chew vibe, but I don't think books that aren't Chew should really even attempt that

And whoever hated on Epic Kill wasn't lying. I really, really don't like being able to tell when an artist uses (traces?) Poser. It's a helpful tool in many cases but using (tracing?!) it for figures and faces makes your characters look like creepy, lifeless puppets. With rheumatism

I probably didn't give these books a fair shake by binge reading them all back to back, but it did turn out to be a pretty interesting way to study the mechanics of a first issue. Even with the ones I didn't like, most of them did an impressive job of hitting the ground running.
624118, ToT only gets better.
Posted by justin_scott, Mon Aug-27-12 08:47 PM
Not mind blowing, but absolutely worth checking out.
624170, Copped the next 2 issues. You were right.
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Aug-28-12 01:53 PM
The art can be stiff at times, it occasionally veers into cliche territory, but overall it feels like I'm watching a really cool heist flick. Bringing the son in was an unexpected move that should make things even more interesting moving forward. Mad entertaining, glad I kept reading.
624209, #4 or 5 has a nice twist, if i remember correctly

624461, Yeah this book is really dope, actually
Posted by buckshot defunct, Sat Sep-01-12 12:02 PM
My anti-Kirkman bias was kinda clouding my vision at first but I'm digging it quite a bit

The shit Redmond pulled in the last couple issues was a lot of fun to watch, and will no doubt propel more shit towards the fan in upcoming issues...

Posted by justin_scott, Sun Aug-26-12 03:49 PM
Liefeld has decided to take the two things he's most famous for....badly designed art and Levi's commercials...and COMBINE THEM!

He's going to design a custom line of clothes for Levi's.
- Jeans with one thigh three times larger than the other
- Utility shirts with 47 pockets and pouches
- Work gloves with six fingers
....and best of all, Levi's doesn't make shoes!!

the opening page? fucking great. the Guardians motivation to eliminate freewill is some truly awesome evilness that I can get behind (getting defeated).

but then the actual execution of how they're going to enact this new plan? whoooooaaaa muddlyfuddlymcgillobfuscuddly! that was a LOT of mumbo jumbo that didn't connect all that well and I think it's fair to count myself as a fairly avid GL reader!

and the lost tribe of Guardians?!!? yooooooooooo! what the fuck! I need those OGs to roll a lot more heavy than they did! they were fucking AWESOME but before I knew it Ganthet (who I still don't buy as a heel, by the way...) was just enacting his will on them!

anyway -- we'll see what comes of it, but they are stretching the GL universe pretty far right now. need more inter-color wars, less jerry-rigged ancient lore to serve a silly event...
624387, Agreed.
Posted by KneelB4Me, Fri Aug-31-12 02:06 AM
This one definitely didn't kick off like the Sinestro Corps War. In fact, I'd say that's the last time GL was really John Blaze. It's still good, but it's not "save it as the last book I read this week" status anymore.
