604519, I don't feel like niggas give ARSENIO HALL his due
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sat Mar-31-12 08:57 AM

You gotta remember: This is REGULAR NON-CABLE TV
http://youtu.be/4HrpCFXYpwY

He was holding it down on some black shit way back

Obviously couldn't compete with Jay and Dave and them
for late night, but had solid ratings

The Farrakhan shit was his undoing...white people weren't
having that, he put his integrity ahead of everything else

604521, thought he was on his way out bfore Fararkahn was on
Posted by rdhull, Sat Mar-31-12 09:44 AM

On the dock of that bay serving a life sentence, even if Im going to hell Im gonna make an entrance
604533, It was Leno
Posted by BigReg, Sat Mar-31-12 11:06 AM
He was collateral during the Leno/Letterman wars and NBC had guests embargo his show because they were not about to fight that war on TWO fronts.

604596, I have it on good authority that it was the Farrakhan appearance
Posted by ZooTown74, Sun Apr-01-12 02:07 AM
that did him in

Arsenio would have survived the Leno embargo just fine

I mean, it was clear from jump Leno and Letterman weren't checking for Arsenio's guests, etc.

604529, this particular interview is huge for so many reasons...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Sat Mar-31-12 10:20 AM
..arsenio had his pros & cons like everyone else

but this was a pivotal moment in pac's career...

..and miles to go before i sleep...
604545, i remember me and my family watching this religiously
Posted by astralblak, Sat Mar-31-12 01:08 PM
at that time, it seemed huge to us... so Arsenio was on the low end of ratings? all the footage one finds is classic, but maybe it's just nostalgia getting the best of me

and damn, what a moment in Pac's life. Blud came off calm ass shit for all the shit he was dealing with.
604549, His show did TONS for hip hop

Posted by Calico, Sat Mar-31-12 06:59 PM
people loved him and his show.....he was the one to tell the late night talk show honchos that there could be another option....

i agree that he got caught up on the late night wars cause he was getting to be TOO big (and black)...i'm still suprised they cut him off, cause they had to have lost alot of money in doing so....
604591, I can answer this

>i agree that he got caught up on the late night wars cause he
>was getting to be TOO big (and black)...i'm still suprised
>they cut him off, cause they had to have lost alot of money in
>doing so....

Nope. I remember this. At one point ratings were tanking, because he was NOT getting consistently good (i.e. "big/relevant at the moment") guests. It was all great at first, but after a while, guests like 2pac were few and far between. He had a loyal following, but it wasn't enough. The ratings were maaad low. It's been a while, but I want to say at one point the show was pushed back further into the night than when it started out.

I was sad when it went off the air, but at the time it didn't come as much of a surprise.
604633, but at the time, there were few people who DIDN'T like Arsenio
Posted by Calico, Sun Apr-01-12 05:58 PM
most people of color and more than a few whitefolks loved him...i agree that he may have have a down turn in the ratings, but again, this was during the late night wars, and the very beginning of someone doing late night outside of the big 3, so i think his ratings dipped a bit and folks used that as an excuse to cut him off..

604631, refresh my memory y'all on how Arsenio ended, was it abrupt?
Posted by Bombastic, Sun Apr-01-12 05:43 PM
because I watched him closely in the early days of his show (where else was a kid gonna see KRS-One getting two full interview segments in 1990 on a non-cable TV late night talk show?) up until around '93/94 when my attention got a bit diverted by dumb-ass high-school shit.

I remember the press making a big deal of his 'I'm gonna kick Jay Leno's ass' comments, vaguely recall flap over Farrakhan but I don't have a clear picture in my mind of the show's final frames.
604635, These dumbass responses are proving the point of the post.

Niggas are stupid as fuck

Nobody needed Arsenio to compete with Jay or

He was on Channel 9 or some shit (NYC), one of the

Not CBS, ABC or NBC

He wasn't even on a major network, niggas didn't
need him to push high ratings to be profitable

He was always a niche market type of nigga, never
expected to do any better

He FAR EXCEEDED what he was supposed to do

I GUARANTEE they lost money after he left....the
show they replaced him with was doo doo and nobody
watched it

Posted by mrhood75, Mon Apr-02-12 09:21 AM
Clinton playing "Hearbreak Hotel" on the sax while rocking shades is probably one of his most iconic moments. And it is considered one of the all-time great moments in late night TV. Certainly one of the more "important" moments as well. And I don't think he would have been able to pull something like that off on Leno or Letterman.

He did play "Summertime" on saxophone on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" in 1988 after he kind of bombed at the 1988 DNC. That was also a very big moment for Clinton.

604972, dang, I met Tupac after that interview. Arsenio too
Posted by ABC_Style, Tue Apr-03-12 11:27 AM
I used to live across the street from where they taped it and I remember after the taping (day time), he was outside signing autographs. This was when "Keep your head up" was hitting on the radio. I was across the street playing outside and everyone was like "OH SHIT TUPAC!!!" He seemed super happy.

I met Arsenio too, same street, although I can't remember if it was before or after the Tupac thing, most likely before. Signed an autograph for me and my friends. Extremely nice guy.

I never watched the show because I was too young to really appreciate it but he always seemed like a cool dude. These youtube clips are making me kick myself for not watching it at the time, lol.
615757, I had mixed feelings on Arsenio
Posted by handle, Wed Jun-20-12 10:34 AM
I think his monologues were not funny.

I think he is way too flattering / obsequious during his interviews.

I think the people he had on to interview were largely the same people I saw on every other show - and that his interviews brought nothing new out with them.

BUT....

I think he sometimes booked people for interviews that other talk shows would not.

And he had very very good hip-hop guests on his show - guests that I had never seen on TV - or had only seen on Yo MTV Raps.

If he comes back he'll be in the same category of viewing I have for Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley -- I'll watch when they have someone interesting on the show and not for the hosts.

(And I'll probably watch the first few weeks regardless.)
615761, i like(d) the idea of the show more than the actual show.

615764, His show was classic..but compared to the others
Posted by Heinz, Wed Jun-20-12 11:21 AM
....you gotta do more....what he needs to do with his new show is NOT be "a black late night show"

be "a GREAT late night show". Say what you want about Jimmy Fallon but they put on a GREAT show. Jimmy Kimmel too. So I'm hoping to see Arsenio do more. than what he did last time.

Like I said with Fallon, he's going to be fine once he works out the kinks... like the bits could stand to be funnier... that time capsule bit was a bit dusty, and the food truck bit didn't work...

It also appears that the idea is that he just took some time off and now he's back, as if he never left... I think he's aiming for cats around my age and older... that being said...

One thing that's obviously changed since his time on the air is the fact that social media is everywhere... not sure if it would behoove Arsenio to find a fresh way to incorporate it into the show (but NOT by doing "live tweeting" or any dumb shit like that... the show tapes at like 3:30 in the afternoon anyway so it wouldn't make a difference)

I'm sure there will be complaints about the sameness of the set but I don't mind that too much...

And he's going to definitely have to bring the star power... my only concern with that is how much politics are going to play into whom he can book for the show...

Bottom line is that it's great that he's back, because even with the abundance of talk shows out there, he's going to be able to once again cater to an underserved audience...

But Zootown, black people and media, so...

The time capsule bit was painful...and the "what ive been doing for the past 19 years" bit went on waaay too long. By the time he got to the Downton Abby bit, i was almost ready to turn the channel.

Chris Tucker is a horrible interview...dunno if he was nervous or just didnt have anything interesting to say, but it felt like Arsenio was throwing him Alleys...but Tucker couldnt Oop it. Woulda been nice if he did a little standup as well, since he was promoting his tour.

Surprise guests? Paula Abdul? I got the connection, but come on man...
