big cast too
571870, Uneven script but the cast/performances carry it for the most part

I'm usually not a fan of the coked out comedy but Charlie Day & Colin Farrell kill it. Colin could've used a lot more screen time. Day dominates.

Bateman is always great as the straight man & there's no exception here. Sudeikis doesn't quite strike me as a ladies man but he plays it pretty well.

Spaceys swimming with the sharks again but Jennifer Anniston really sinks her teeth into the sluty dentist role. There's one particular scene I hope the ladies recall around Halloween when they need a last minute costume idea.

You can tell Jamie Foxx & everyone else had a lot of fun making the movie which helped my enjoyment when some the jokes were off the mark. If anything it could've been fleshed out more & ran a little longer to allow Farrell & Anniston more time to shine.
571895, Agreed for the most part. The jokes weren't as funny as much as...
Posted by bwood, Wed Jul-06-11 04:51 PM
the performances made them funny. I thought it was the perfect length though.
571931, WHUUUUUUUUUUUT?!?!?!
Posted by SankofaII, Thu Jul-07-11 04:52 AM
Anniston gave a decent performance?

you mean, ol' butta horse face went in and was good?!

awwww shadoobie, i'm going to have to see this for myself
572045, I think Aniston is great in Friends with Money, Good Girl, Office Space

With these high NYC ticket prices, I know I would have been upset if I plunked down dollars to support a somewhat subpar movie, at least from what you typed out in the original response. I'll probably surf the torrents if and when a screaner hits the internets and might cop on DVD if the movie is decent enough and the extras are nice enough. Kinda sucks because I wanted to peep this movie in theaters to watch Charlie Day in a major role.
572025, This sounds like it's worth a $5 pre-noon show

Looking forward to seeing it this weekend
572071, I really enjoyed this
Posted by pretentious username, Sat Jul-09-11 08:38 AM
got to see it for free, and wasn't expecting much but it surprised me. Aniston was actually the funniest boss in my opinion, and the three leads were great.
572088, I think she was the best too
Posted by Marauder21, Sat Jul-09-11 01:26 PM
And I'm glad Day held his own with the other leads, and stole quite a few scenes.
572093, The best part of this was the little tangential conversations.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Jul-09-11 03:57 PM
Every time they got off task, the movie got five times funnier. The big gags were all right but mostly spoiled in the trailer (this movie would've been so much better had I gone in knowing zero about it)-- the side convos make it worth matinee price.

Favorite line: "Bowflex?"- Sudeikis to random huge black guy

Sudeikis and Day are especially good here. Bateman does Bateman. I actually really enjoyed Jamie Foxx as well-- sometimes I think he "acts" with quotation marks, but here he treats it like a character in a sketch, which it essentially is, so he fills every bit of screen time with little physical gags (the looks he gives while drinking from the straw were always funny).

The bosses are mostly devices: Aniston was funny, and Spacey had his moments (the gam-gam breakdown). Farrell had the most one-note and trivial character. Spacey and Farrell were almost *too* unbelievable-- it's wild to think that Jennifer Aniston blackmailing Charlie Day into fucking her seemed the least far-fetched, lol.

Worth catching. Don't expect anything great, but you'll get your laughs.

572129, Agreed, the 3 of them together really made this movie
Posted by Y2Flound, Sun Jul-10-11 08:33 AM
Everytime it got real focused on the plot of killing bosses the movie was a little less funny than when the 3 of them were just talking.

Little lines like I've become an expert at sifting cocaine, bowflex? and just their conversations between them all.

I hope even though this movie isn't the best that people realize how well the 3 of them did together and it really helps their careers. Obviously Baetman is Baetman and seems to be a lot of places right now, but Sudekis has been under rated on SNL for a while and Charlie Day really busted out from behind the guy from Always Sunny status.

In some ways it reminded me of when Stiller, Vaughn, Ferrell, Wilson et all were just starting to be in every movie together and you could tell they just had a blast filming with each other which could carry a weak film.

Jamie Foxx as well--

>treats it like a character in a sketch, which it essentially
>is, so he fills every bit of screen time with little physical
>gags (the looks he gives while drinking from the straw were

agreed, the "So you DO know the movie." line killed me.
572154, yeah. the trailer gave away a lot of big jokes.
Posted by will_5198, Sun Jul-10-11 04:12 PM
and that's fine, you have to do that with comedies, but usually in R-rated movies there's something extra to the gag they can't show in previews. but not here -- they entire set-up, punchline and reaction were in the trailer. it kind of slowed the comedic momentum because you knew what was coming.

Sudeikis was quite funny though (and I didn't care for him in Hall Pass). and um, this was the first time I thought Aniston was "celebrity hot". maybe it was the dark hair and bangs, or the office outfits, or the older woman, sex-addicted craziness (yeah, that was it), but she stunned me in this film.
572244, Yeah, she's usually super-horsey.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Jul-11-11 12:32 PM

But I think her talking about fingering her pussy probably had something to do with it. They did doll her up something nice though.
572179, spacey was Lester Burnham on a bender and a half in here.
Posted by Cold Truth, Sun Jul-10-11 07:33 PM
he seemed like the same character, if he didn't die and his cynicism finally eroded every last strand of decency in his dna, this would be him ten years later. american beauty, the sequel: lester couldn't beat them, so he joined them. his wife still fucks other men, and he's had it.

anyhow, i wouldn't really call this funny so much as entertaining

i didn't find myself laughing all that much, but i enjoyed it. i was a little annoyed at all the dumb mistakes they kept making, and the jokes never really hit with me on a consistent basis. overall though, i was entertained and enjoyed the movie. the cocaine gag was poorly done imo, but i love the fact that spacey seems to
572223, I tuned this movie out about halfway through
Posted by Mgmt, Mon Jul-11-11 10:34 AM
It didn't grab me at all and just wasn't that funny. Anniston was annoying and a little too over-the-top. Jamie Fox was the best part, with Colin Ferrel 2nd.

The jokes were just tired is all. Prison rape jokes? C'mon. Do something new.
572227, overall grade: B-
Posted by SankofaII, Mon Jul-11-11 11:25 AM
lots of flat, uneven jokes...

Jason Bateman played...Jason Bateman.

Sudekis ranged from nerdy doucebag to ladies man and back again..and I wasn't buying it AT ALL (sorry, but *NOTHING* about Jason Sudekis screams "im bagging chicks left and right" that might have been a part that was miscast...but he was funny when he was given the chance to be)

Charlie Day is *THAT* motherfucker...he killed it from start to finish a talent on the rise for real since he just snagged a role in PACIFIC RIM, which should be Guillermo Del Toro's next project

Colin Farrell was perfect as Bobby

Kevin Spacey was DEVOURING THE HAM as Bateman's boss (i'm blanking out on his name) funny at times, cringe worthy overall.

Jennifer Anniston: she was funny i'm shocked. I wished they let her RUN with her role..because it was clear she was into it and was willing to go there...she still can't act her way out of a paper bag but roles as the slut ass chick with some power...she's IN for real.

but im with Longo: when they were just being random, the shit was funny as hell...

572259, jason segal should have had jason sudekis' role imo.

meh. i hated him most of all.

lol, i enjoyed it, but then i read him as the guy from american beauty finally snapping out of his complacency, his cynicism giving way to IDGAF of the asshole variety.
572236, I really enjoyed Charlie Day and Foxx, but that was about it
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Jul-11-11 12:05 PM
Just felt that, for such a plot-driven movie, things didn't seem to go far enough... things always threatened to spiral out of control, but never really did. And as a result, the movie came off as being too safe and not nearly as funny as it should have been. It's a movie that relies on the characters' (and our) shared knowledge of "how these things are supposed to go" but the problem is that, instead of flipping that on its head, the plot played out somewhat to form.

I agree with Longo that the funny that *was* there was mainly in the scenes with the guys talking to each other about what was going on. Each of the bar scenes (with the guys themselves as well as the guys at Foxx's bar) were pretty damn funny, and that's mainly because of the dialogue. And once they had to get down to business regarding the plot, that's when things went off the rails for me.

I thought that Charlie Day was pretty hilarious. He nailed his character and came off quite believable as a bumbling dude with quite the dilemma... although I think it would have been a bit more believable if it weren't Jennifer Aniston in Hot Bitch mode. Put Roseanne in that role and see if the situation doesn't only get funnier, but also more believable.

Jason Bateman can make me laugh at just about anything but his character here was too flat. I just didn't care that his boss was shitting on him and that he wanted to off him.

I thought Jason Sudeikis was okay but I just didn't believe him as a pussy hound. I would have bought him more as a wannabe pussy hound, a dude who talks a lot of shit but ultimately can't produce.

Colin Farrell should have been given more to do.

Kevin Spacey was too over-the-top to be taken seriously.

Aniston was fine, given the material.

The movie was okay but anyone who says this movie was funnier than Bridesmaids should be drug tested.

572241, On Charlie's character: *spoiler*
Posted by dgonsh, Mon Jul-11-11 12:30 PM
I think the reveal that Charlie was a registered sex offender for peeing in a playground at midnight with no kids around was hilarious.

But I feel like the laugh would have been even greater if they had alluded to him not being able to find a job anywhere and that Aniston was the only one who would hire him, before actually telling the audience why.

For example, it would have been curious as to why he put up with aniston the whole time and then had it been revealed by Bunk in the interrogation scene.

Having said that, that sub-storyline was one of the funniest in the film.
572269, you're right. and there's tons of little adjustments that needed to
Posted by Mgmt, Mon Jul-11-11 02:17 PM
be made like that. Whole movie needs a funny adjustment.
572262, I need to see Bateman and Cusak in a movie together, like, now
Posted by spenzalii, Mon Jul-11-11 01:15 PM
While they both play the same damn characher in everything, they do it so well... Jason may as well change his name to Michael Bluth at this point
572271, I need to see Day and Galifianakis in a movie together, like, now

572666, Jennifer Aniston and Charlie Day MADE this movie
Posted by earthqueen, Thu Jul-14-11 11:49 AM
I can honestly say we laughed the whole movie, but we're silly
like that.

but Jen and Charlie's story was by far the funniest. And she did
a good job and the girl looked GORGEOUS.

Kevin Spacey was on one, he epitomized that manager's who teeth
you always wanted to kick down the back of their throat but
never go to.

IDK about Colin Farrell... he did play a GREAT douchebag tho
574680, Solid
Posted by LA2Philly, Mon Aug-01-11 03:32 PM
Day stole the show, Sudekis was good(didn't really believe his ladies man angle), Bateman was solid as always....Spacey was a tad bit too ridiculous but Aniston, Farrel, and Foxx made up for it.

Solid comedy.
585693, I laughed at everything Sudekis said
