I actually think the plot is pretty good for a romantic comedy, but the trailer wasn't too encouraging. But I'm glad Common is finally playing a nice guy. I like to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's been so crummy in his movie roles because they always have him playing some kind of tough guy, which is a stretch.

a better lead duo, because I didn't buy Latifah and Common in their roles at all

I didn't buy Latifah in this role because she's simply too charismatic. It looked and felt like she was trying mighty hard to contain the charisma and play the down-on-her-luck, never chosen chick.

And not to say that J-Hud does frumpy better. It's just that we KNOW Latifah. We've seen her through the years, from the All Hail the Queen days to Fresh Prince to Living Single to Chicago and so on. This felt like she was slumming, or stepping in at the last minute because another lead actress dropped out (and yes, I know, this was a Flavor Unit production). Perhaps a younger actress, like J-Hud, or Gabby (cmon) would have better served the fairy tale vibe that the story seemed to be going for...

I also didn't buy Com as a superstar NBA point guard. He's too short (even at that position), and his head seemed too big for his body. And the b-ball sequences in general were laughably unbelievable. He's got nice guy charm, and I would have believed him as a bench player, or as the agent, or even as the coach, but not as The Man on his squad.

So when you have two leads whom you don't buy in their roles, it makes it that much harder to buy their romantic chemistry. On a related note, it shole would have been nice to get a Latifah-Com RAP collabo (not the thing they played at the end credits, with Com rapping and Latifah scatting... shout-out to Latifah and Shakim for putting more than a few Van Hunt songs in the movie, however).

Back to the movie, I actually thought Dwight Howard would have made for a more interesting lead. The scene in which he visits an injured Com (I guess we're to assume that he's still in town because of the All-Star Game) showed that he has some charisma and a nice smile to build upon, should he so desire.

I thought Paula Patton was decent, but her character came off as inconsistent and only did things because the plot required her to do them, especially near the end.

The characters as a whole were bland and the movie felt rushed. The script came off like a standard romantic comedy but it needed to go further. I thought we needed to see Latifah on more dates. We needed Latifah doing her thing at work. I needed to get a better sense of why dudes were picking her over besides she's big and... well, there really wasn't another reason given (and even that wasn't explicitly stated by Laz in the first scene)... I mean, would it have killed Michael Eliot to give her a flaw or two? Maybe she's overly excited by sports. Maybe her thorough knowledge of the Nets intimidates guys. And yeah, you have to address her size, but even still, there should have been something else to make her seem realer.

I'm not a big romantic comedy dude so I wanted to give the movie more slack and hope that it would defy some of the conventions that makes me avoid these movies in the first place. But that didn't happen. Too bad.

Good!

Latifah and Com had very good chemistry together. They both did a good job acting, and Latifah's acting was great! The movie had a real nice flow and feel to it. Paula Patton did a good job too. Sanaa did a great job of directing. They did a good job of integrating the basketball scenes, as well as a great job of adding the older characters (Phylicia Rashad & Pam Grier) without them being preachy or too "teachy". Nice balance of romance and funny in the movie. I will definitely be seeing it again. I enjoyed the movie alot. Thanks to Flava Unit for bringing us a good quality black romantic comedy. Much respect to Shakeem and Latifah for this one.

Felt so good to see 2 legends of hip hop on the big screen doing it real nice.

Regardless of what the armchair Siskel and Eberts in here had to say, I thought it was a decent movie. I really think that Queen Latifah was perfect for this role, because it was believable that she would be a Jersey girl(because she is), into sports, and an around-the-way type. I thought Common's character was believable(sp?) because he presented like a nice guy, who would appreciate an around-the-way girl, even though society would expect him to automatically go for the "arm candy". Plus, I think Queen Latifah is beautiful. You don't have to be a size 5 to be beautiful. The shallow pretentiousness of OKplayers is just too much. With that said, I must admit, I seriously thought I was going to have a heart attack when Common was doing sit-ups during one of the physical therapy sessions. This movie to me was like 'The Truth About Cats and Dogs', for Black people. Works for me!

Substitute "armchair Siskel and Eberts" with "people with their own opinions." I mean, you just typed up 150 words describing why you liked the movie. How are you not an armchair Siskel and Ebert too?

Right. Becasue only on this site would people find the romantic pairing of Common and Queen Latifah to be dubious.

I think that statement speaks for itself.

I'm not self-righteous about it. I do not 'carry it' like I'm a professional movie critic, or director/producer assessing a peer's work. OKplayers often approach their so-called "opinions" from that space. Furthermore, I realize that opinions are like a**holes, everybody's got one, but shallow is shallow, and shallowness, and preoccupation with the fake, Hollywood model of beauty comes up over and over here, not because you are OKplayers, per se, but because you buy into that lie. Another example is the scathing indictment launched at Jill Scott for her comments about brothers marrying white women. What did people go for who disapproved of what she was saying? You guessed it, her weight. The same old, she's Black, she'sfat, so she can't have an opinion, or in this case, attract a fine-a** man. FOH.

The rest of this below does not even merit response.

Denigrating people as "arm chair Siskel and Eberts" because they didn't like Just Wright seems a bit self-righteous to me.

>I do not 'carry it' like I'm
>a professional movie critic, or director/producer assessing a

By "carry it" do you mean speak with confidence using Film Studies 101 terms when critiquing a movie? Cause that's kinda what it sounds like you mean.

> Furthermore, I realize that
>opinions are like a**holes, everybody's got one, but shallow

>Hollywood model of beauty comes up over and over here, not

Again. This isn't the only place where the believability of the Common/Latifah pairing was called into question. And it wasn't called into question because people have bought into any lies. It was was called into question because most super eligible bachelors don't end up with heavy-set tom boys.

That has nothing to do with Just Wright. And you're right. People shouldn't have attacked her weight after she said that. They should have attacked the stupidity of her comments.

I feel what is being said here I was actually surpised for some reason to see some of the responses to this movie but I forget the world I'm living in.

But that's part of the lie what you're saying here that she can't get this guy no many guys won't admit they like these type of women because they aren't suppose to. I'm both heavy set and dark skin and I see on a daily the guys who are attacted to me compared to who will actually approach me because I don't fit in the mold of the type of female he's suppose to like. I dont' have a problem with that in terms of how it weeds out the non-sense but it's still sad the mentality people have. Or I've even avoided relationships because I didn't want to deal with the judgement of their friends who didn't think I was good enough to be with their friend or bother in one case so I'd create a reason to get out of the relationship, that was the teen years as an adult I wouldn't dare freak what another person has to say!

Plus Latifah wasn't really all that tom boyish in this film apart from her love of bball she still dressed up and looked like a lady ever in her jeans and jersey. If the story was strickly about Paula Patton's character Morgan and Scott getting together and Morgan had the personality of Leslie, that wouldn't have even been mentioned.

And I mean we even have real life examples, look at when Angie Stone and D'Angelo was together oh that was a no no sexy fit man with an overweight female? Or even Common and Syreena she's not overweight but muscular and you would think she is the ugliest woman on the planet the way people talk about her period let alone her being with Common and that's probably why I loved this movie so much and found Common believable and have wanted to see Lah in a role like this for a minute so I guess it was believable for those of us that live it. And perhaps a nice lil too for others to examine their prejudices with.
519017, OK, now you're just bullshitting.
