499967, Who's the GOAT female director of all time? Posted by Vaiops2wega, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
This is kind of a spin-off from my GOAT female MC post in The Lesson. It actually took me about 30 minutes to find other female directors besides Coppola and Bigelow, which is a pretty sad statement about Hollywood. I think I picked a decent six but you fuckers will still probabaly complain. We know women might not want to be rappers because of all the misogyny in Hip-Hop but why is there such a shortage of women in the field of film making? Women aren't less visionary or imaginitive than men. Is there a feminine quality that they bring to films that most people don't care for?
Poll question: Who's the GOAT female director of all time?
Poll result (17 votes) | Katheryn Bigelow (Hurt Locker) | (5 votes) | Vote | Patty Jenkins (Monster) | (1 votes) | Vote | Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry) | (3 votes) | Vote | Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) | (1 votes) | Vote | Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) | (5 votes) | Vote | Jane Campion (The Piano) | (2 votes) | Vote |

Why Catherine Hardwicke is not in her place makes this poll instantly suspect

Well she would be if she made good movies, but she doesn't, so she isn't. Wah wah

If you're talking about just Hollywood, I agree there is a shortage.
>Women aren't less visionary or >imaginitive than men. Is there a feminine quality that they >bring to films that most people don't care for?
I think it's more an issue of distribution and financing and thus a lack of awareness that is holding back more people from seeing more films by women.

Both Point Break and Slap Shot were directed by women. I love that.

it seems that she got credit for a lot of shots (especially in 'olympia') that she didn't do.

I'd say that's 3 (or at least 2) strikes against putting her in this post.

500039, Off the top, Akerman, Varda, Denis, or Deren Posted by Sponge, Fri Jan-29-10 04:36 AM
Maybe Campion is first tier as well. Denis is my favorite.
Some contemporary filmmakers: Lynne Ramsay, Lucrecia Martel, So Yong Kim, Kelly Reichardt, Isabel Coixet, Agnes Jaoui, Xu Jinglei
Some contemporary filmmakers that I've only seen 1 film from and really liked it or loved it (some of their latest has been getting or gotten good/great reviews): Marien Ade, Andrea Arnold, Jennifer Baichwal, Lucia Puenzo.
Other films that I really liked or loved: Take Care of My Cat, Ana y los otros, and Liberty Kid.

500042, co-sign on all of this Posted by SankofaII, Fri Jan-29-10 05:50 AM

I'm sorry but NEAR DARK, STRANGE DAYS, THE HURT LOCKER, and POINT BREAK trump LOST IN TRANSLATION and THE VIRGIN SUICIDES ANY DAY...
plus, Kathryn didn't ride her daddy's balls to get status either...real talk.

500230, So True. . . Posted by hope, Fri Jan-29-10 05:52 PM
I don't get the voting here. Lost in Translation was good, but it didn't have the life-changing effect on me that it did with other people. Biegelow gets my vote on this one.
