492670, dan:" i hate white people". just one reason why roseanne was awesome

so they were arguing about dj kissing a black girl in a school play. roseanne was trying to teach him the "we're all the same, we're just people" lessons and said dj was kissing her and that was final. that's where it gets GREAT with an epic exchange of one liners.

dan says dj doesnt have to, and and the awesomeness begins.

roseanne: you're kissing that girl, and that's all there is to it.
dj: dad says i didn't have to, and he outranks you!

*dan has a horrified look on his face and turns his back to dj*

roseanne stares dj down with her best "i brought you into this world, motherfucker!!!" look, and asks... "ARE YOU NEW????".

dj says he ain't doing it, and runs upstairs.

roseanne says great, now your kids a biggot.
dan: dj would probably have a problem with one of his own kind-oh god i didn't say that!!!
roseanne: at least now i know where he gets it from, just like you and your dad.

so the argument plays out, and roseanne screams at dan that if she knew dan was gonna pass down his parents ways to their kids, she would have had second thoughts.

dan walks to the couch, says "i hate white people!!" and pounds a beer. scene!

bonus points come when dan is trying to get his black friend to understand where he's coming from and is failing miserably. his black friend starts making some points and dan backpedals, and black friend says "WHY BECAUSE SOME OF YOUR BEST FRIENDS ARE BLACK?" and dan says, YEAH. thats why your here!!!"

so black friend says, "then why is bob here? does dj have to kiss a dumb girl too?"

*dead*

oh no. the fun did not end here.

dan has the proverbial heart to heart, tells dj he's gonna kiss a lot of girls and they're all gonna different in some way.

dj: should i kiss lila then?
dan: whats different about lila?
dj: the guys say she uses tongue.
dan:........ i'd go for it

scene. i hope im not the only one who appreciates the greatness of this show.

492681, I like how they ended that episode as well,

the black girl's father comes to there restuarant and they think he's trying to do something bad, then he let's them know he was the girl's father that dj had to kiss, powerful episode. Roseanne did a good job on that episode. It pointed out that hypocrisy of people who claim to be so liberal aren't always as liberal as they think.

492688, She had some really good writers on that show

Of course, she treated them like they were less than dogshit (or so goes the legend), but that's neither here nor there

my understanding is that the vast majority of that show was still HER vision, good writers or not. could be wrong though.
492878, i worked for a producer that was a writer on that show...

... and he confirms she was a nightmare to work with who fired people who didn't deserve it often.

492955, i believe it. i don't doubt she was hell to work with

or that she fired people for no reason

i'm just wondering how much of the meat of the show was her brain child vs that of the writers.
492693, Dan and DJ always had great exchanges on that show

One ep DJ had an erection in front of his class and Roseanne, trying to make him feel better, told him about her first period, and DJ ran screaming out of the room.

Dan: "Hey, what's wrong with you?"

DJ: "Mom's telling me a story and I don't want to hear anymore!"

Dan: "Well that's no reason to go running out of the room like a maniac!"

DJ: "It's about her period!"

Dan:".......As you were."

493035, What was the shark for Roseanne?

I'm thinking it was when they hit the lotto, but I stopped watching before then, just caught the later eps through re-runs.

Though the series finale mixed for me, it really was meaningful. I really liked that show. I thought it was cool that it was more real than a lot of the shows on tv at that time. The fact that Dan really died from the heart attack, and to keep herself from breaking down she wrote was cool.

But, yeah, winning the lotto was definitely the shark jumping point. If I won the lotto, there is no way I would have stayed in Landford, Illinois! Even if I did, I would have at least moved from that house!

I guess they would try to say that the house is as much of a character on the show as the actors.

Still stupid though, lol.
