475267, if i've already seen The Matrix, why would i go see Surrogates?
Posted by SoWhat, Sun Sep-13-09 02:27 PM
especially if i don't read comic books?

i just saw a commercial for the movie. it looks like a Matrix retread. what gives?
475269, it looks a bit reminiscent of "Total Recall" too...
Posted by disco dj, Sun Sep-13-09 02:47 PM
I might check it out on a slow weekend. Not in a rush to go see it though...

475271, i'd watch it on an airplane.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Sep-14-09 11:05 AM
the reality is that the ppl are actually hooked into some machine/network and the 'life' they experience is being lived through their surrogates. som'n goes wrong w/the machine/program. folks experience 'death' via their surrogates that results in their actual death in the real world.

that's what i can make out from the trailer.

it reminds me of The Matrix in that the ppl in that movie had been tricked into thinking they lived in a real world but they were actually hooked into a big machine and were 'living' in an idealized, digitally created world. death worked similarly. ppl who 'died' in the Matrix also died in the real world.

475365, maybe its because
Posted by Shaun_G, Mon Sep-14-09 11:37 AM
I actually read the graphic novel it's based on so I'm filling in stuff the trailer isn't making clear, but if the movie is faithful to the graphic novel it really isn't like the matrix at all.

Shaun G.
475419, i haven't read the graphic novel and i won't.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Sep-14-09 02:50 PM
once i heard the movie is based on a graphic novel (though i'd heard it's a comic book) i figured there must be more to it than what the trailers show. that's part of why i made this post.

the trailers haven't convinced me the movie is worth my time or money.
475444, this is where you get it twisted.

no one is tricked into getting surrogates. Everyone willinging does it because your are effectively "safe" to do what ever you want from teh comfort of your own home. The Matrix was about freeing people and their minds from the enslavement of the machines in a world they thought was real.

Everyone in Surrogates lives in the real world...they just don't leave their houses.

so it's like OKP...only with better dialogue, bruce willis, and robots.
475496, you misunderstood.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Sep-14-09 08:59 PM
i wasn't under the impression that the folks in Surrogates were necessarily tricked into living through their surrogates.

the point is the ppl in both movies 'live' in a digital re-creation of the world.

so far this movie sounds less interesting than The Matrix.

The Jackal
Mercury Rising
Armageddon
The Siege
Tears of the Sun
Hostage
Live Free or Die Hard

But I'll still check out a sneak peek of Surrogates on the 24th unless the Gamecocks are givin Ole Miss a run for their money

I can only recall some shiddy disguises from Bruce, a shiddy accent from Dick Gere & Diane Venora, & Jack Black gettin his arm blown off by a big ass gun. I forgot Sidney Poitier was even in it so yeah it's safe to say it sucked.

Posted by lonesome_d, Tue Sep-15-09 01:04 PM
(comic-form or otherwise) that when I read the book (which I liked a whole lot), the comparison didn't even hit me.

It's obvious that anything involving VR and sci-fi is going to owe a debt to Neuromancer and Gibson's other works, just like The Matrix does.

Hell, Tron covered many of the same themes in 1982. Did you ever say 'Why do I need to see The Matrix when I've already seen Tron?'
475627, ah ha!
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Sep-15-09 01:07 PM
it's a genre thing.

okay.

i'm not into sci fi for the most part. i saw and loved The Matrix. it was a rarity.

now i get it though. thanks for the explanation.

and for the record: i didn't see Tron. LOL
475634, I never saw Tron until maybe 2 ears ago.
Posted by lonesome_d, Tue Sep-15-09 01:39 PM
Which is kinda surprising considering I was prime demographic age when it first came out (10 y.o.)

It stank.

But still - take a look at this Wiki description of the Tron plot:

"Flynn is taken first to a holding pit, where he meets the Program Ram, and then is taken with a number of other Programs to meet Sark. Sark then informs everyone that they can either renounce their belief in the Users and join the MCP, or they will be forced to play games that result in their eventual elimination. Flynn eventually meets Tron (Alan's program), and he, Tron and Ram escape from the Light Cycle arena into the system, prompting Sark to send out his forces in pursuit. Eventually, a tank fires at the group, killing Ram and separating Flynn and Tron. While continuing to follow Tron, Flynn gradually discovers that as a User he possesses god-like powers within the computer dimension, enabling him to manipulate its 'physical' laws at will."

Apparently there was a movie called Brainstorm from 1983 that used a similar early approach to VR. Haven't seen that one.

And if you haven't read Neuromancer, it's worth a library loan even if you're not a big science fiction fan.
475650, i couldn't follow the description.

i didn't see Tron but i wanted to b/c the graphics looked cool in the trailers/commercials. i was maybe 6 when the movie came out.

The graphics were the coolest thing and for the most part held up surprisingly well. The bike race is wicked.

Plotwise, what the above means:
-people (users) get sucked into the computer
-their digital avatars interact with a program that wants to dominate the users
-users who expire in digital form expire

It was a really well-thought-out future world, with a history and all sorts of great details.

The plot itself was fine, fairly standard. The performances? Well, Bruce Willis does better at looking beat up than ANYONE. I liked the moments where we saw the human versions of the actors the best in terms of acting.

And with thrills... Jonathan Mostow creates tension as well as any big-name action director. When the girl throws a fucking parking meter at Bruce Willis? Shiiiiiit.

A solid 2.5-3 out of 4 stars. Worth seeing for sci-fi nerds.

there are no thrills, it's boring. a moment later when he shoots through the roof he does it as casually as you'd order food. so they have super strength and speed, but YOU ONLY SEE IT DURING THE ACTION SCENES

that's retarded.
